To think dulcolax are the work of the devil?

So I’ve been a bit constipated lately so on Saturday night I took a couple of dulcolax before bed.

Woke up Sunday morning with the most horrendous stomach cramps, I was sweating, nauseous, in absolute agony and felt like I was about to give birth. It was that bad I could literally see my lower abdomen moving around as though it was a baby kicking. I went to sit on toilet - nothing happened, just more pain and hot flushes. I splashed cold water on my face and went to try and make a coffee … doubled over in the kitchen, sweat pouring off my face I actually considered that I might need to go to A&E the pain was that bad. Suddenly felt the need to go to toilet, rushed there, sat down, had a normal poo and then OMG … I had a fart which I swear lasted about 15 seconds and then horrendous diarrhoea that was like water, it went on for ages. The cramping and diarrhoea went on all day and by the night time I was seeing bright red blood on the toilet paper. Started getting really concerned … googled … saw blood was a rare side effect … went to bed.

Woke up this morning feeling ok - had a coffee and the cramping has started up again.

Anyone else had such a horrible experience with these pills?? The rest are going in the bin!

AIBU to think this shouldn’t happen with over the counter medication??

Bisacodyl is brutal. Taking just one would be enough.

I took one of the Superdrug own-brand ones. A tiny and innocuous looking yellow pearl. 4 hours later…bloody hell.

I don’t know why the replies are making me laugh so much 😂 now I don’t know if my stomach is hurting from the trauma of the pills or the laughing at this thread 😂

I had this with lactolouse last week. Apparently it takes 48 hours to work - does it hell. Within 3 hours of taking it I was crippled on the toilet with hot sweats and pints of liquid gushing out Blush Did the trick though

Paq · 29/08/2022 08:41

Same happened to me, but with vomiting added in for extra fun. One tablet has no effect and two make my insides explode.

Floydthebarber · 29/08/2022 08:41

No, but I still get angry at the tagline for Senakot: "gentle, predictable relief". It was over 20 years ago and the memory still makes me shudder!

mummytothree87 · 29/08/2022 08:47

If you think that's bad don't take picosulphate 🤦‍♀️ took dulcolax had the same symptoms as you and thought change to a different one. Seen them selling pico in home bargains and strawberry flavoured thought that'll do....oh fuck no 😂😂

We get an aloe one here. Here was me thinking that is all natural, it will just move everything along calmly, I mean aloe is marketed for how gentle and calming it is after all.....

I didn't leave the house for TWO days after trying out one of these. I was not sure what I was more alarmed about, the rotty botty or the fact that I was dehydrating at a rapid pace.....

Unwritten rule from that day on, aloe is for external use only!

0blio · 29/08/2022 08:49

I recommend Dulcosoft. It works well but is much more gentle. I only take it every two or three days though, these drugs are strong!

Tisforptarmigan · 29/08/2022 08:50

I will never take them again. Horrendous. Only took one. I was the same. Sweating and cramps in the middle of the night. Made me vomit. Then horrible diarrhoea.

Should be a warning on the packet that they mimic food poisoning and make you feel incredibly I'll.

Tanfastic · 29/08/2022 08:50

I think the problem is you've taken a couple 😂.

I love these if I'm constipated, really work a treat but if I'd taken two I'd not be able to leave the house for two days.

I normally take a half or one and see how I go.

Thanks everyone, I’m relieved to know it’s not just me and the replies have really cheered me up 😂

Erm nah, it is just you @Salamamca that takes two of something very strong and then wonders why she’s in so much pain …

Yes! I actually thought I had food poisoning as we had a takeaway the night before. I told DH I thought I had food poisoning as the pain was bordering on unbearable

I took dulcolax once when I had mild constipation. I woke up in the night and thought my arse was going to fall out. Had a panic attack on the toilet. Husband thought something seriously wrong and wasn't impressed I woke him up for just pooping pains. Can't imagine what would have happened with 3 tablets.

WelshMoth · 29/08/2022 08:54

Sideorderofchips · 29/08/2022 08:30

Don't ever take 3

I thought someone had shoved a nuke up my arse, exploded it and the shit was the fall out.

I honestly thought I was dying

I'm so sorry but this is hilarious to read.

Again, really sorry but Grin.

starfishmummy · 29/08/2022 08:55

One is plenty!!!

Helenahandcartt · 29/08/2022 08:55

Your problem was taking a couple, take 1 wait… consider another in the morning

TwoCoffeesPlease · 29/08/2022 08:55

I took them once on holiday and it was equally as awful as you have described plus I also threw up mid watery shit. I then felt funny for a few days afterwards and couldn’t eat anything without it going straight through me.

Next time OP I recommend syrup of figs, a strong coffee and a few moams.

Krabapple · 29/08/2022 09:06

I use these occasionally as they do the trick. I only take 1 though. I thought they took about 8 hours to kick in. I once took one in the morning then dd decided she needed something from town. They kicked in a little early - omg I had to literally run through M&S and use a body public toilet. I was in there ages - I daren’t come out. I was on the bus too- doubled up in pain trying not to shit myself. I had to call dh to pick me up from the bus stop / literally ran into the house & exploded. The kids bring it up every time they want a laugh at my expense!

RancidOldHag · 29/08/2022 09:11

You took a "couple"

Of course it was going to be dramatic. It's very effective laxative and you took the maximum dose. The label says that if you've not taken it before, you should start with only one tablet a day.

She’s not listening to this very sound advice @RancidOldHag

She’s strictly here for the “lolz”. 🙄

RiderGirl · 29/08/2022 09:17

Well I was prescribed Cosmocol from the doctors for constipation. Literally shit myself trying to get in the front door to the toilet.....

x2boys · 29/08/2022 09:19

isthismylifenow · 29/08/2022 08:24

Maybe try the suppositories next time (if you are feeling brave enough for a next time). They work way faster than the tablets. One (and for a love of god do not use two), works in about half an hour.....

Yes my son has chronic constipation he's prescribed them ,it gives him awful stomach pain and vomiting ,but it works when nothing else does.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/08/2022 09:20

i would have taken half for mild constipation. You were asking for trouble taking two.

YANBU

This has happened whenever I've taken them

And always wondered if I wasn't constipated enough to warrant one hence the bad reaction - but maybe it's more normal than I thought and they're just asshole tablets
