To think dulcolax are the work of the devil?

Salamamca · 29/08/2022 08:02

So I’ve been a bit constipated lately so on Saturday night I took a couple of dulcolax before bed.

Woke up Sunday morning with the most horrendous stomach cramps, I was sweating, nauseous, in absolute agony and felt like I was about to give birth. It was that bad I could literally see my lower abdomen moving around as though it was a baby kicking. I went to sit on toilet - nothing happened, just more pain and hot flushes. I splashed cold water on my face and went to try and make a coffee … doubled over in the kitchen, sweat pouring off my face I actually considered that I might need to go to A&E the pain was that bad. Suddenly felt the need to go to toilet, rushed there, sat down, had a normal poo and then OMG … I had a fart which I swear lasted about 15 seconds and then horrendous diarrhoea that was like water, it went on for ages. The cramping and diarrhoea went on all day and by the night time I was seeing bright red blood on the toilet paper. Started getting really concerned … googled … saw blood was a rare side effect … went to bed.

Woke up this morning feeling ok - had a coffee and the cramping has started up again.

Anyone else had such a horrible experience with these pills?? The rest are going in the bin!

AIBU to think this shouldn’t happen with over the counter medication??

I don't like them at all. i had similar symptoms and never took them again. I prefer sennakot. Its much more gentle.

She’s not listening to this very sound advice @RancidOldHag

She’s strictly here for the “lolz”. 🙄

Well to be fair, it's a bit late for her to do anything else now....

I have diverticular disease and the specialist always recommended Fybogel. No horrific side effects but you need to take regularly. I would keep some in the house op. There is Laxido as well but I have not used this. No terrible side effects at all. It is a natural based product.

As for horrors, I have had two colonoscopies and without doubt the pre-med to clear you out is far, far worse than the actual procedure and that is a camera up your back passage for about 30 minutes. Your whole body cramps with dehydration and you dare not move off the loo.

Exactly, it’s not like I can go back in time and just take 1 is it 🙄 I think @SavoirFlair is just in a shit mood and wanting to take it out on someone.

I’ve tried fybogel before but the consistency makes me gag, I couldn’t even get it down 🤮

No I’m not in a shit mood - you yourself said you didn’t realise until reading this forum that you shouldn’t take two. Despite having a giant label in the packet.z

Something isn’t the “work of the devil” if you overdose it.

I'm diabetic and on Metformin which often makes me constipated..... so I tried these as my Dad has them on prescription. He said take 2.......... jesus wept, I honestly couldn't leave the bathroom for about 4 hours. It was horrific. It very clearly emptied my entire colon.............. and took me about 2 days to feel better.

Now I take fibre supplements, eat a few squares of dark chocolate and if I'm really desperate, a few sugar free sweets. Bingo and no pain!

Are you always so serious? I read the back of the box, it said take 1 or 2 tablets. I took 2 as laxative meds don’t normally work well for me. I didn’t read the leaflet, now I’m having a laugh about it. If it makes you feel any better I certainly wasn’t laughing yesterday … I was almost as serious as you are!

Following for advice.

Similar gut ripping experience here.

SavoirFlair · 29/08/2022 09:32

@Salamamca fair enough. I’m glad you’re ok and apologies if I’ve brought down the tone of the thread.

Horcruxe · 29/08/2022 09:33

Take lactulose instead.

To make it work straight away best thing to do is.

Take a 20ml dose and then straight away drink 500-800 ml water.

As long as the constipation isnt too severe it works within the hour. And is much easier on the stomach.

No worries, I try and get through most things with humour, life is serious and depressing enough as it is. I apologise for snapping at you.

I took 2 once. I was so sick and faint that I actually passed out and got 2 black eyes and a buggered up knee from the fall. I was creative with my explanation of my injuries. Laxatives were NOT mentioned 😀

😂 I wouldn’t mention them either. I felt really weak and dizzy yesterday, was drinking loads of water but I think I was shitting out more than I was taking in 🤦‍♀️

Dolcolax is very strong stuff and makes me ill.
Dulcoease is much better and results in normal poo the next day!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 29/08/2022 09:42

Does anyone ever really read the long leaflet?

DH normally takes senna but run out so asked me for a dulcolax (I also take them to combat pain killer side effects). He had a similar aftermath. They don’t affect me like that at all but he said it would be a cold day in hell before he repeated that exercise 😂

🤣🤣 this has made me chuckle.

OP - I've never tried it but will give swerve it. I've taken lactulose before after DS when I was constipated. The constipation was awful 😩 I'd had an episiotomy and was trying to poo, it was stuck there, I was sweating so much I was sliding off the loo seat. All whilst DS was squawking for a feed. Worst day ever.

Thankfully after DD (caesarean) it was fine and I remember walking out the loo in the hospital grinning from ear to ear, DH asked why, I said I'd just had a poo and it was fine 😂

LunaTheCat · 29/08/2022 09:47

Thank you- this is hilarious!
i was feeling a bit glum now feel cheered up!
Glad you are better now!

Brokenandstressed · 29/08/2022 09:49

That sounds hilarious and dramatic poor you op. Dss uses movicol sometimes and that seems mild enough.

Shitting the baby out 🤣 my god

Hard to take advice after the deed has been done.

Is there a law against laughing?

No, but I still get angry at the tagline for Senakot: "gentle, predictable relief". It was over 20 years ago and the memory still makes me shudder!

Yep, I had a bad experience with them. So long ago I can’t remember how many I took but knowing how risk averse I am I would say that I took the recommended dose.

Spent most of the next day trapped in the bathroom at work debating whether or not I’d need an ambulance. Not even sure I passed anything after but the cramping was horrific, I really did think I’d have to go to hospital.
