What to do with Mein Kampf?!

Bannedcontent · 23/08/2022 11:22

My late DF was a history buff and after he died we gave a lot of his books to charity but kept a few.

Among them was an English translation of Mein Kampf. It’s a first edition from 1939.

I held on to it as a historic artefact but would now like to move it on.

I can’t sell it on Amazon or eBay as it’s banned.

So the question is: do I bin it? (YABU)
Do I donate it to a library or something? (YANBU) Where?!

Throw it away

Brefugee · 23/08/2022 11:22

Donate it.

WeIoveyouMissHannigan · 23/08/2022 11:23

My husbands a historian and he would love a copy

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 23/08/2022 11:24

Burn it.

SquirrelCity · 23/08/2022 11:24

Donate it to a museum.

TheBikiniExpert · 23/08/2022 11:24

Don't throw it away! Can't you sell it elsewhere? You could always sell and donate (some or all of) the money to an appropriate charity.

FriedasCarLoad · 23/08/2022 11:24

Could you look on a FB group that focuses on WWII history, and offer it for postage?

That way it's going to someone else who is interested in the history (like your DF) rather than idolizing the evil.

AceSpades54321 · 23/08/2022 11:25

Take it to an auction house, it will be worth something.

herbiegoes · 23/08/2022 11:26

See if a local school or college want it? I had a copy as I needed to study it for my degree, it is surprisingly boring as a book. But when I finished with it, I gave it to my local college who kept it for students doing their coursework / NEA on Hitler.

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 23/08/2022 11:24

Burn it.

Ironic.

Narcheska · 23/08/2022 11:27

contact auction houses or old / rare book sellers. Maybe your locals museums if nothing else works out they might have some connections

dont bin it. I say this as a Jewish woman we shouldn’t erase what hitler did but teach about it correctly so mistakes like that are avoided again

Bunce1 · 23/08/2022 11:28

id do a bit of research and try and sell it. It’s a rare book and probably worth something.
rare/antiquarian book sellers or specialist auction houses.

SirenSays · 23/08/2022 11:28

Please don't destroy it. Look on FB or donate it to a local college.

Anewdayanewdawn · 23/08/2022 11:28

I personally wouldn’t want to make a profit on that so would contact an auction house specialising in rare books to ask them who may be interested in accepting it as a donation.

AgnestaVipers · 23/08/2022 11:29

Don't throw it - that's akin to book burning. it's important that all ideas can be scrutinised.

cexuwaleozbu · 23/08/2022 11:29

I would recycle it. There was no shortage of copies so any legitimate organisation that has need of a copy for historical or research purposes already has one. There's nowhere legitimate that has need of this copy.

I generally don't agree with censorship but this is one book that is actively used to spread hatred if distributed irresponsibly. Historians etc can have access in a context that balances out the danger. There's no need to actively spread the repellent ideas by going out of your way to find a new owner for this copy.

Needmorelego · 23/08/2022 11:30

Imperial War Museum might take it as a donation ?

Comefromaway · 23/08/2022 11:31

It's banned???? Really?

thirstyformore · 23/08/2022 11:32

My family has a huge swazstika flag which my late grandad took off a church in cologne in WW2. I think it's in my mum's loft at the moment. I don't think these sorts of things should be destroyed. I'd donate the book to a museum.

BuenoSucia · 23/08/2022 11:32

Ask your local shul for advice.

thinkfast · 23/08/2022 11:35

I'd try to donate it to a university or a museum, if possible. Perhaps a museum with a WW2 exhibition would accept it?

chillipenguin · 23/08/2022 11:37

Museum

chillipenguin · 23/08/2022 11:38

I think its just banned on ebay and amazon not generally though it was banned in Germany for many decades.

Skatewing · 23/08/2022 11:40

I will buy it from you.
I'm a collector of controversial books

loislovesstewie · 23/08/2022 11:43

You will find someone who will buy it, try some antiquarian booksellers I agree the contents are vile ,but it's important for the greater understanding of how extremists operate.
