New Pillows today. How often do you change your pillows and do you wash them?

OP posts:
chatterbug22 · 21/08/2022 17:22

Don’t wash them, wash the cases, once every few months

girlfriend44 · 21/08/2022 17:26

You buy new plows every few months?

Varies on the type of pillow re washing.

I buy myself new pillows regularly as I like firm plump pillows, DH prefers flat well worn ones and would happily use the same pillow forever. DCs I buy probably once a year if they don’t end up binned after being hit by a vomiting bug.

Yanbu to ask. Could have asked in chat or housekeeping.

justasking111 · 21/08/2022 17:37

Down and feathers so hang on as long as I can they're so expensive 🙈

They reckon every 2 years

Goldmember · 21/08/2022 20:50

I struggle to find a perfect pillow, I'm constantly trying new ones but they're never right.

GardeningGoddess · 21/08/2022 20:50

Every four years, down so fairly expensive, I used to wash them and tumble dry them but I probably won't do that anymore!

Queenoftheashes · 21/08/2022 20:51

I think I had the same pillows for 25 years or so.

I threw some out recently but only because they stank from being stored. Never wash them.

ShesNotTheMessiah · 21/08/2022 20:54

I put pillow protectors on my pillows and wash them about once a year.

I'd change my pillows as and when they need it and I can afford it - but probably every ten years? But I expect to buy more expensive pillows (around £60-100 each).

Kualma · 21/08/2022 20:57

I have pillow protectors and only wash them if they look dirty but I never ever wash the pillows.

I spent £160 on my two pillows about 14 months ago and have no intention of changing them anytime soon! Gorgeous and firm (albeit a bit less firm than when they were first bought!)

User639921 · 21/08/2022 20:57

About two years but after that when they are a bit sad I use them as the bottom pillow of the two. They never seem to wash very well and go lumpy

whattodo2019 · 21/08/2022 20:57

I replace the pillows in the house every two years.
I wash the pillow cases and proctors every week

WhatsitWiggle · 21/08/2022 21:03

I probably only buy new pillows every 10 years, haven't washed them - feather and down. But they have thick pillow protectors and those are washed every 8 weeks.

LionessesRules · 21/08/2022 21:50

We moved back to the UK 3 years ago. The pillows were new then, and there is no way they need replacing yet.
The last pillows were 5 years old, as bought new after an international move. They were also in fine condition when we had to pass them on.

So, not flying pillows round he world excluded, maybe 7-10 years?
Cases washed weekly. Pillows only washed if someone pukes on them, but they are never the same after that.

DilemmaDelilah · 21/08/2022 22:15

Haven't bought pillows for several years. I like goose feather and down pillows. They get washed in the summer when we have some uninterrupted sunshine so that I can put them in the tumble dryer. We have solar panels and a A rated tumble dryer so it doesn't actually cost anything to dry them. I can usually manage to wash them all over a few weeks.

lightand · 21/08/2022 22:28

Good gosh
And I thought I was "bad".

Dont wash[gave up on that when the cost to take to laundrette was more than buying a new one].
But assumed everyone would be throwing out every 6 months or so.

Wow. Mnetters are normally so particular on all sorts of other things.

Brieandcamembert · 21/08/2022 22:34

What do you do with the old pillows?

Riverlee · 21/08/2022 22:36

When the old ones look worn out! Probably once every few years. Surprisingly expensive to replace them all.

Wafflesnsniffles · 21/08/2022 22:40

Argh as always threads of this sort wind me up. SO many examples of needless waste.

Pillows do not and should not be thrown out "every six months". Landfill nightmare. Just dont please.

We've had ours for years. And they are still totally fine.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 21/08/2022 22:40

I had one dunlopillo that lasted me for 20 years. Obv washed the covers frequently. On a new one now but expect it to last at least another 10 years. Dh likes the god awful feather pillows so changes them every couple of years and spends
ages fluffing them every evening. Drives me insane. Why would you want a horrible feathery pillow that needs fluffing, goes flat and need replacing constantly?!

Wafflesnsniffles · 21/08/2022 22:41

"lightand" - Every six months? Seriously? Why???????? So wasteful.

Gaveitall · 21/08/2022 22:43

I always always use pillow protectors so my actual pillows remain pristine.

Washing them is a waste of time. They go out of shape and lumpy.

My current pillows are 2 years old & im very reluctant to exchange them. They are so comfortable & having struggled to find comfy pillows I’ll keep them as long as it’s hygienic to do so.

I hate going to other people’s houses where there are no pillow protectors. All that dribble & sweat. Yuk.

Every six months? Don't you mean new mattress? Think how minging pillows get with bed bugs and general mingingness in that time. New pillows every other week for me please.
