New Pillows today. How often do you change your pillows and do you wash them?

Every year as can’t wash them as don’t have a tumble dryer - cheap ones though £10 each

eurochick · 21/08/2022 23:01

Years. Until they go thin or are stained. We use pillow protectors which get a wash a few times a year. Pillow cases are washed weekly with the rest of the bedding.

hotdiggetydog · 21/08/2022 23:03

chatterbug22 · 21/08/2022 17:22

Don’t wash them, wash the cases, once every few months

You only wash your pillowcases once every few months? YUK.

edenhills · 21/08/2022 23:04

Every 5 - 10 years.

Reebokclassics · 21/08/2022 23:08

Wait so, where is everyone disposing of these pillows every few months? Is there a recycling station for them?

OppsUpsSide · 21/08/2022 23:10

when they need changing, we get gifted v expensive down pillows from DM when she inexplicably decides the never used ones in the spare bedrooms need replacing.

KittyMcKitty · 21/08/2022 23:12

People throw pillows out every few months?!? I have one pillow that must be over 30 years. They’re all feather ones and are just fine! Plus good pillows cost a fortune.

what are people doing with all these pillows? Also if they’re foam ones that just adding to landfill.

abovedecknotbelow · 21/08/2022 23:13

For
Me personally about every 6 months, the specific one that stops me snoring gets saggy, they get moved on to Dds and I have to replace for the sake of my marriage!

Fluffruff · 21/08/2022 23:14

Blimey. I must be hugely out of touch as we’re a pretty clean family and I don’t think we’ve had new pillows in more than five years. They’re all down/feathers and it never occurred to me to put them in the machine as assumed they would clump together. No tumble dryer. Our pillows have protectors and the cases are washed weekly or so.

Fluffruff · 21/08/2022 23:15

I mean how do people afford it? I vaguely remember our last lot of pillows costing 70-80£ each as they’re feather so times four for all family members plus two big square ones for our bed = £££££

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 21/08/2022 23:15

I don't think I've ever bought new pillows 😊

PlanetNormal · 21/08/2022 23:15

About every six months. I have asthma & suffer from respiratory allergies so I buy new synthetic pillows & duvets regularly to minimise allergens. While I’m fortunate in that the cost is insignificant, this obviously isn’t ideal from an environmental perspective, but I do need to be able to breathe properly and it does make a difference.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 21/08/2022 23:18

DP has ones with some kind of cooling thing in them and are expensive so hes get changed when needed but current ones are 3 years old.

DC get changed every couple of years

Mine get changed regularly (every few months) because it doesnt matter what pillows i buy and how expensive they are i flatten them..... no idea what i do in my sleep but i cant keep a pillow more than a few months. They get passed to DDog afterwards to go in his bed.

All have pillow protectors on which get washed weekly but i dont wash the actual pillows.

Cant buy feather because of DP allergies

bumbledeedum · 21/08/2022 23:20

Can't believe people are arbitrarily replacing (& presumably binning?!) pillows after 6 months/2 years etc. It's no bloody wonder we're facing the climate crisis we are. Why would pillows need replacing that frequently?

PinkArt · 21/08/2022 23:30

Every six months???? Comments like that make me wonder what's the point any of the recycling or other eco friendly stuff I do. How much rinsing of tuna cans would be needed to offset all those pillows sitting in landfill! That's up there with the people washing towels after they've used them once.
I think I replace about every five years, at a guess. Usually when I notice they're looking tragically flat.

allboysherebutme · 21/08/2022 23:31

Max two years. X

JILL21 · 21/08/2022 23:37

Eeek, I’ve got a down pillow that’s 30 years old. Wash occasionally and wash protectors once every six months and pillow cases weekly.
can I recommend baavet pillows and duvets if you’re that worried about bacteria. Wool is antibacterial. Swear by the duvets for the best nights sleep.

OzziePopPop · 21/08/2022 23:52

Pillowcases are washed weekly, pillow protectors washed monthly and pillows themselves washed ‘if necessary’/rarely. We have feather/down and they can be washed but have to be tumble dried very thoroughly after.

if you have pillows that you don’t need (NOT FEATHER, ONLY FIBRE ONES) can be donated to local dog rescue charities, they’re very useful as bedding. Possibly for cats too 😀. Please though, no feathers, cleaning up after a feather pillow chew accident / pillow fight is never fun! Cat charities might be ok with feather though? Not sure..

girlfriend44 · 21/08/2022 23:56

I saw some anti snore ones what's all that about?
How does the pillow stop your snoring?

baffledcoconut · 22/08/2022 00:00

Mine is probably 15 years old, husbands 5 years old.., we buy different ones depending on our preferences. Both north of £100 each. No way am I replacing them until they are utterly worn out. Pillowcases washed weekly, protectors and inner cases washed monthly and pillows get hung on the line for the day every month or so too.

I assume people also bin their duvets yearly too….

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 00:04

I'm not sure how old mine is
Has a protector on and it's never been washed (the pillow, not the protector!)
I sleep on one flat pillow though for my back

FirstFallopians · 22/08/2022 00:09

DH and I- very infrequently. Our current “main” pillows are about three years old and still in great nick.

Decent quality pillow protectors make a huge difference.

I’ve had to replace one or two for the kids after vomiting bugs when the pillow protector hasn’t quite done the job. I’m loathe to do it, but they go all mishapen after washing.

Ruthietuthie · 22/08/2022 01:12

My pillows are feather and down. They were around $100 each, so pricey, but worth every penny. I bought them after sleeping on this brand in a hotel and finding them wonderful - both incredibly fluffy but also firm. I used to buy cheap pillows - and they soon went flat or lumpy - those are the type that probably do need throwing out every few months. Good pillows, with pillow covers then cases, should last for years.
