Service station baby

Today, stopped at motorway service station for coffee and toilet.

Back to car, the car in front parked, fetched out a baby change mat and put it on the ground, next to the rear wheel. Grandma fetched out baby (2 months ish) and mum put baby down on mat on ground by wheel. Mum changed nappy, grandma and grandad stood watching. 😮
Why? We were literally in a place that has toilets and baby change. I wouldn't lie down in service station car park 😮🤯😮

The only weird part is the whole family watching.

GurningGolfer · 20/08/2022 21:22

Thats weird. I use the boot and I never use baby change facilities they're always filthy.

Dinoteeth · 20/08/2022 21:22

How bonkers, actually sounds dangerous to me, risk of another driver not seeing mum and baby but maybe baby was crying and they were fighting nappy rash and trying to get LO out of a dirty nappy ASAP.

XelaM · 20/08/2022 21:22

Definitely weird!

mooonbaby · 20/08/2022 21:36

I find baby changes really unsanitary most of the time so preferred to change my baby anywhere but. I would have put the mat on the back seats of my car though and changed baby there rather than by the rear wheel.

PineappleSun · 20/08/2022 21:46

Was there definitely a baby change? I stopped at a service station on the A1 the other week and there wasn't one, had to do an awkward back seat change.

KnittingSister · 20/08/2022 21:46

I get that baby change facilities can be filthy,, but any other place would have been safer!

I always did mine in the boot when on the road!

Mariposista · 20/08/2022 22:14

Nice, so going to get back in car without washing hands, touching all over the steering wheel.

toffeechai · 20/08/2022 22:15

I was expecting someone to have given birth in the car park from your thread title.

supersonicginandtonic · 20/08/2022 22:18

Have you ever seen the queue for a baby change in a service station, during peak holiday season? They're ridiculous.
They didn't actually do anything wrong. Boot was probably full of luggage. How do we not know they haven't used hand gel after the change?

Same 😂 I was expecting an exciting story of how the op had delivered a baby in a service station

TabithaTittlemouse · 20/08/2022 22:20

What’s wrong with it?

TiredYorkshireMam · 20/08/2022 22:21

I don't find it that weird. I find service station toilets and baby changes very unsanitary and would do it outside rather than in there.

They put a mat down so the baby wasn't on the ground and with 3 adults standing around I doubt the baby was in danger of being run over so sounds ok to me.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/08/2022 22:21

After queuing for 15 mins for a service station baby change, with no one coming out and the queue lengthening. I changed my baby in the car. They had put a chair in there for breastfeeding too...

(Hands were wiped with baby wipes and sanitiser afterwards)

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 20/08/2022 22:24

Prob more hygienic on the ground tbh..

TheCutter · 20/08/2022 22:34

Meh not really a big deal and maybe the changing facilities were closed?

We always changed DS in the backseat of the car but it was awkward, especially at rolling age.

Summerfun54321 · 20/08/2022 22:37

Lying a tiny baby on a mat somewhere where cars are driving around?! WTF? They could get driven into by a car or run over crouching by a wheel like that. So odd and gross and stupid. A pavement baby change is desperate but an oily garage forecourt is something else. Utterly stupid.

This.

I mean honestly, it's a baby, not nuclear waste. And the adults standing around meant there wasn't really a safety issue.

Summerfun54321 · 20/08/2022 22:39

I misread and thought petrol station! Still not great next to a wheel somewhere where cars are driving around though!

FettleOfKish · 20/08/2022 22:40

Sounds a bit grim; but not so grim as the person who changed their (quite a bit older) baby on the floor right behind our seats on a ferry last weekend, while people all around were eating.

For reference the ferry also had baby change facilities, numerous sets of toilets and a family room.

EllaPaella · 20/08/2022 22:40

What's weird is being so irate about something that has literally nothing to do with you.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 20/08/2022 22:40

I’m assuming the issue was the baby was on the road in a car park.

TomAllenWife · 20/08/2022 22:42

Omg who gives a fuck about this?

Baby on a mat, surrounded by family members

No, the baby was on a mat.
