To Love Pigeons

theconversation.com/in-defence-of-pigeons-187216?utm_source=pocket-newtab-global-en-GB > Putting a link on here but I don't think it works. The article came up on on Firefox. I love to see the pigeons in my garden, and can work out the pairs. I love to see the fat fools rambling about. I don't leave out food for them, but they peck at my apple trees. I also love to hear them calling to each other from far away. There'll be a pigeon sound and, a few seconds later, one back, saying 'I'm here'.

We have a heirarchy of what creatures are acceptable to humans. It infuriates me when I see adults encouraging their children to go for pigeons by kicking at them etc, rather than teaching them to respect all forms of life.

I like pigeons. My toddler adores them and it's made me see them in a new light.

Battlecat98 · 19/08/2022 21:33

I hear you. We are a pigeon loving family thanks to my son. We do feed them though, we have a few different types now, I actually find them quite cute.

goingtotown · 19/08/2022 21:34

I've never seen adults encouraging children to go for pigeons by kicking at them.

wonderingwhatsnext · 19/08/2022 21:34

I hate them. They wake me up by cooing down the chimney and shit all over the garden seating and play equipment. Gross.
However we have a sweet one nesting in a tree at the bottom of the garden and I totally respect her right to be there and raise her family.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 19/08/2022 21:36

I like pigeons. But not as much as I like seagulls.

XenoBitch · 19/08/2022 21:36

I love watching the wood pigeons in my garden. They are too big for my feeders, and just look clumsy sitting in the tray of seed... sometimes 4 at a time. They just flap at each other instead of eating.

A young street pigeon (what are the other pigeons called?) often appears in my garden looking all lost.

yonce · 19/08/2022 21:36

I like pigeons - I feel so sorry for them, we spent years breeding them as messengers and caring for them, racing them etc and then just released them all and called them names!

Neither have I.

Not encouraging them, but they are not telling them not to either. I see it all the time.

Branster · 19/08/2022 21:40

I like watching them too! Especially the pairs, very sweet.
I never know what is the difference between pigeons and doves. Are doves the white variety? I never see those as free roaming birds.

Coastalcreeksider · 19/08/2022 21:42

I've got one nesting in a tree in the garden for the third tim

Thelikelylass · 19/08/2022 21:42

My favourite bird sound in the world. I love hearing the wood pigeons on our garden it's so comforting.
When one of my girls was little we watched a male wood pigeon trying to woo a female, he kept shuffling along next to her on the top of the fence. I started this Pepe le Pew style dialogue and my daughter thought it was the funniest thing. They are our chubby little pursuers of luuuurrvve!

Spodocomod0 · 19/08/2022 21:43

I've seen parents encouraging their kids to chase and shout at pigeons. I like pigeons. They wood pigeons are getting proper chubby near me, some of them struggle to achieve lift .

Rock pigeons! The Trafalgar Square type.

I LOVE seagulls! Clever, characterful, funny birds.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 19/08/2022 21:45

I like them too. Hate it when people call them vermin or flying rats. Same with seagulls. And actual rats, for that matter. I mean, I don't want them in my house, but they've as much right to exist as any other creature.

godmum56 · 19/08/2022 21:46

not really enough meat on them for me

Haha, thanks! I never know what to call them.

Exasperatednow · 19/08/2022 21:51

I love the ones that live in our garden. We have one nesting in our tree. I love watching the hopeful males dancing for their disdainful females

BeachBonfiresAndGuitars · 19/08/2022 21:53

I love pigeons, they’re very sweet.

userxx · 19/08/2022 21:57

I had a racing pigeon in my garden for 4 days, I fed him up and hopefully he found his way home.

mycatisannoying · 19/08/2022 22:00

I have a lovely fat (and clean!) pigeon who comes into my garden. This sounds mental but I instinctively like him and want to be his friend Grin
However he flies away when I approach him too closely with food.
I am not a lover of birds generally, but this dude is alright.

PickAChew · 19/08/2022 22:05

We get lots of wood pigeons visiting our garden. We did have one nesting but the tree had to come down, last autumn (and thank goodness it did, after all the storms). Their fights are like drunks swinging at each other so we rarely have more than two.

Discovered this afternoon that their frequent and enthusiastic attempts at reproduction have been successful as we had visits from two juveniles - one young enough to be past the ugly squab stage but still chirping rather than coo-ing.

figmaofmyimagination · 19/08/2022 22:08

I love pigeons, especially the nesting ones. They make me feel better about myself 😁
