theconversation.com/in-defence-of-pigeons-187216?utm_source=pocket-newtab-global-en-GB > Putting a link on here but I don't think it works. The article came up on on Firefox. I love to see the pigeons in my garden, and can work out the pairs. I love to see the fat fools rambling about. I don't leave out food for them, but they peck at my apple trees. I also love to hear them calling to each other from far away. There'll be a pigeon sound and, a few seconds later, one back, saying 'I'm here'.

We have a heirarchy of what creatures are acceptable to humans. It infuriates me when I see adults encouraging their children to go for pigeons by kicking at them etc, rather than teaching them to respect all forms of life.

My DM passed away a little while ago. My DF misses he dreadfully.
Two beautiful fat wood pigeons have started visiting his garden, it gives him so much enjoyment. He has named them Bert and Gert. They have their own huge bird bath and food bowl.
He didn't put their food out the other day and they came to the patio door, most put out.
Gorgeous creatures.

I have Mrs Pidgireroogar nesting in our tree. She's lovely she is. Mr Pidgireroogar just came to check in with her.

She seems quite unphased by the siamese cat. I guess she's been (the pigeon) around for a while, and has formed a realistic opinion of her hunting capabilities. . .

Their pathetic little nests though. Make me feel quite sad.

Our couple have built a really good nest, in the tree, it's quite astounding!

I love pigeons. Very underrated. It's joyous watching them fly together in city centres. A sight to behold. Or maybe it's just where I live.

I love rats too. As a pp said humans are tge disease spreaders not animals (majority of the time). I've just read sword in the stone and there's a whole paragraph, merlyn I think, extolling the virtues of the humble pigeon.

Whatever you do, don’t let them drive the bus.

That's adorable! They do become very trusting towards people who feed them regularly. My pair are quite happy to fly down onto the feeders as I'm filling them, or walk about near me while I'm sat in the garden, but fly off as soon as my partner or son come out.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/08/2022 21:50

I've got a bloody brothel of the things nesting under the solar panels. There's regularly 10+ of the things loitering on the roof shitting and dropping crap around. The gutters are constantly filling with crap from their nests and within weeks of clearing them they're filled and the rain water cascades over them again.

There aren't any nice song birds in the garden anymore, just 18 hours of them cooing each day echoing through the house. There's no point in trying to feed and encourage the smaller birds either.

I wouldn't be cruel to them out of principle, but I really do not recommend the buggers having a mass breeding centre on your property, and bloody hell they make such a fuss when they're shagging around and having orgies.

itsnotmeitsu · 24/08/2022 22:03

I have a horrible feeling that my pair has had something happen to them. For the last few days I've just seen a single one, and there are feathers in the garden. We have had sparrowhawks nesting in the past. I hate to think of birds losing a mate. I'd been observing a pigeon flying in and out of a particular tree a while ago bringing in one twig at a time, thinking; 'how long is it going to take you to build that nest?'. Just seeing one on its own is upsetting, and now worrying about the young ones. But nature is, "red in tooth and claw". I'm trying to convince myself that it's just that we have so many birds living in our garden (lots of trees) that I can't keep track of them all and they're probably fine.

I've got the same, lots of feathers in the garden., I looked up into the tree and there's feathers hanging off the nest but pigeon adult is still sitting there and did see it's mate flying into the tree several times today.

Not sure what to think about the amount of feathers, we do get birds of prey around and magpies too so maybe the nest has been attacked. I hope they'll be ok though.
