AIBU to say this government is morally bankrupt?

From the BBC "UK ministers who backed sending asylum seekers to Rwanda were warned by their own adviser that its government tortures and kills political opponents".
"The warning came weeks before the British government tried to send asylum seekers to the African nation".
"The adviser raised concerns about the tone and accuracy of an official note on Rwanda's human rights record"
"There is an ongoing legal challenge against government attempts to keep more of the comments secret".
"Migrants identified for the aborted flight, and three media organisations - BBC News, including BBC Two's Newsnight, the Times and the Guardian newspapers - are seeking disclosure of the material".

My goodness, have you only just noticed this govt. is morally bankrupt? Still, better late than never, I suppose.

PersonaNonGarter · 16/08/2022 20:56

You are being hyperbolic or historically illiterate.

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 21:01

Not just noticed - but this example of our government sending millions of pounds to a place they were told by their own advisor was unsafe to send asylum seekers to just underscores their moral bankruptcy.

neither - just quoting from the BBC today.

So what do you think we should do with asylum seekers, where is the line in the sand for you?

That's before we get into those who have commited a crime.

DashboardConfessional · 16/08/2022 21:07

Well yes, obviously. They'll say anything to get votes and "Instead of taking in "migrants" let's send them elsewhere" gets them votes. It's exactly the same as the right-wingers and abortion laws in the US.

We process them like asylum seekers (not criminals). We assess need. We identify those we need to care for and we deport those fleeing criminal records in their own countries as long as the 'crimes' are ones we would not support in this country.
We do not send them to dangerous places where the human rights record is questionable.
We do not send millions of pounds of taxpayers money to a country we cannot trust to do the right thing by human beings.

It’s not exactly a fresh take.

DashboardConfessional · 16/08/2022 21:13

Apparently we're going to be using collarbone analysis and dental x-rays to make sure anyone deported to Rwanda is 18 and not 17. Aren't we delightful.

Mean while the alternative vote grabbing right wingers are offering solutions such as this: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/15/afghan-refugees-in-uk-told-to-find-new-homes-on-rightmove

It's amazing to see all the RG uni educated critical thinkers just being tribal and whatabout

JimTheShit · 16/08/2022 21:21

Reckon most of them are economic migrants from Albania, as opposed to asylum seekers. Plenty of safe countries before UK. (Yes I realise I sound like a true DM reading Middle Englander).

SaySomethingMan · 16/08/2022 21:23

Surely, morally corrupt governance is as old the the country itself. Has there ever been a government that wasn’t so?

CaptainThe95thRifles · 16/08/2022 21:23

Oh well of course if they're only economic migrants, we should definitely send them to Rwanda 🙄

Justanotherlurker · 16/08/2022 21:32

Are you suggesting that econimic migrants are not a thing, and if you belive that it is a thing then how should we deal with it, I posted it up thread but there is a lot of UK citizens who don't get this type of support, considering this is under a 12 year con gov, it is going to be a lot of mental hoops to jump through

Georgeskitchen · 16/08/2022 21:43

Do any of you realise that this is not something dreamed up by the UKs cruel taskmasters? Many other countries do this, including EU countries. Many of these coming over the Channel are Albanian males. They are not fleeing persecution and we have no obligations towards them.

Uh, what part of my post could possibly have given you that idea?

Yes because it's that simple. They all tell the honest truth after they conveniently lose all their papers on the way over 🙄

Exactly! This is why they don't stay in France - because France don't accept their applications or give them all the support that they get here!

elzober · 16/08/2022 21:53

This government actually disgusts me. No moral compass at all, dog whistle politics, constant lies, they propped Boris up for so long despite his many misdemeanours. No sense of integrity.

People who still support them usually fall into one of three categories: uneducated and easily manipulated by right wing press, comfortably well off so none of it affects them or just plain bigoted/ racist.

I'll add that I was once a Tory voter and lots of family still vote for them - I'm not some long time Labour luvvy. But after Brexit and the snake oil the Tories sold us, then the Boris show, I was just so repulsed by the lack of integrity and I will never vote for them ever again.

balalake · 16/08/2022 21:55

Led by a man with no morals, even in his private life.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/08/2022 22:22

I have never voted Tory in my life. I don't like them at all.

However, I won't vote Labour anymore either because I believe that the illegal migrant situation would be even worse under Labour. Labour would be rolling out the welcome party.

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/08/2022 22:28

I dislike a lot of men generally and I don’t think those from the kinds of countries the majority of male asylum seekers come from are the sort whose values and ideology I want arriving here, so I’d happily see most of them chucked back into the sea, quite frankly. I’m not sure why we have to automatically feel sympathy for somebody just because they’ve rocked up and claimed some kind of sob story.

Female asylum seekers actually facing persecution just for existing and having a vagina in their native countries, very different.

Your certainly making a good job of pretending you're a left wing luvvie. Hurling insults at anyone who disagrees with your opinion!!

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 16/08/2022 22:35

We were ready for a change, but most people voted Tory because Labour didn't exactly inspire confidence as a decent opposition.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/08/2022 22:38

The Rwanda thing was never going to work. It was a massively expensive Dead Cat. It had been tried in other countries and failed in multiples ways.

I wonder which Conservative Party donor benefitted?🤔
