From the BBC "UK ministers who backed sending asylum seekers to Rwanda were warned by their own adviser that its government tortures and kills political opponents".
"The warning came weeks before the British government tried to send asylum seekers to the African nation".
"The adviser raised concerns about the tone and accuracy of an official note on Rwanda's human rights record"
"There is an ongoing legal challenge against government attempts to keep more of the comments secret".
"Migrants identified for the aborted flight, and three media organisations - BBC News, including BBC Two's Newsnight, the Times and the Guardian newspapers - are seeking disclosure of the material".

The government??? At least half of the country! We wouldn’t have this government if there were not so many people voting for them.

elzober · 16/08/2022 22:46

Exactly @GetThatHelmetOn the voters enable it and they just give us more of the moral bankruptcy

@Georgeskitchen the Tories are indefensible at this point. People are entitled to vote for them and have whatever opinion they want but IMO people who can still vote for them after the last five years do fall into one of those categories - including my own family members

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 22:58

Yes because it's that simple. They all tell the honest truth after they conveniently lose all their papers on the way over

We don't need 'paperwork' to do the searches and assessments. It doesn't matter if they have false papers or none. We have systems and agencies to do this - we need to deploy the resources, instead of sending resources or people to Rwanda, and start cooperating with other counties instead of pitting g ourself against them.

Reckon most of them are economic migrants from Albania, as opposed to asylum seekers. Plenty of safe countries before UK. (Yes I realise I sound like a true DM reading Middle Englander).

You do. I guess you are. Why is it morally Ok for all the other European countries to take in hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers, but we can just shrug our shoulders as luckily our borders are a bit further away?

What searches?

Rwanda is an awful policy but I think you’re being a bit optimistic about our magical abilities to identify people who aren’t in U.K. systems.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/08/2022 22:22

I have never voted Tory in my life. I don't like them at all.

However, I won't vote Labour anymore either because I believe that the illegal migrant situation would be even worse under Labour. Labour would be rolling out the welcome party.

In a few years, with climate change, there will be a billion people on the move. You think thousands crossing the channel each year is bad? Wait until it is millions. Whether it is Labour or Tory in power will make absolutely zero difference.

RayneDance · 16/08/2022 23:18

So our country is morally bankrupt and you want to keep them here?

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 23:32

There are international agencies - UK International Crime Agency, Interpol etc

Are you kidding me? Do you really think it's that easy to trace all the liars that claim to be from war torn Afghanistan or Syria? Many of them won't even have birth certificates. It's not like Europe in the countries that they come from.

Genuine refugees from Afghanistan, who worked for the government, should be collected and granted asylum.

Nobody who arrives illegally by boat should be accepted. They should be sent back to France.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/08/2022 23:41

Erm... because we are the most densely populated country in Europe? Germany, France, Poland etc are much bigger countries.

It wouldn't surprise me if we took the most per square mile

MidnightMeltdown · 16/08/2022 23:46

@Sirius3030

Hopefully we won't be alive by then. If it was an climate Armageddon and there were 'millions' trying to enter, then imagine that the military would lining the coastline and shooting them after a certain point.

YABU
It's not this government who are morally bankrupt (well they are) it's the people who vote for them that are morally bankrupt.

Whyaretheynotdoinganything · 16/08/2022 23:52

The government will be toast soon enough

Sunnyqueen · 16/08/2022 23:54

Yanbu but tbh it's the fact MPs are claiming their gas and electric as expenses that is getting to me. And that it can't even be petitioned against.

This thread certainly supports that argument 😳

Hawkins001 · 17/08/2022 00:04

Was the advisor corrupted to say that by a foreign gov't ?

Absolute rubbish. We are not, and we don’t. Check your facts before you post.

I dislike a lot of men generally and I don’t think those from the kinds of countries the majority of male asylum seekers come from are the sort whose values and ideology I want arriving here, so I’d happily see most of them chucked back into the sea, quite frankly. I’m not sure why we have to automatically feel sympathy for somebody just because they’ve rocked up and claimed some kind of sob story.

Female asylum seekers actually facing persecution just for existing and having a vagina in their native countries, very different.

Exactly this.

newnamethanks · 17/08/2022 09:02

YANBU OP. They are the Nasty Party (thanks, Mrs May) and proud of it. Which tells anyone all they need to know about it and its supporters.

Have you ever read The Wall by John Lanchester? It's about exactly this scenario. Very good, chilling, highly recommend.

Because in some cases - like Germany, France - they have a heck of a lot more room than we do. Britain is over populated already.

Btw I’m not clear why it’s automatically such an evil thing for the government to suggest that refugees who’ve been here for a year should expand their housing search to the private sector? It’s the same or better treatment than locals get. The only issues I see immediately is whether they have the language skills, and whether they’re familiar with or been given any kind of induction into how life works generally in the U.K.

It might have escaped your notice but we are a very small island and with the best will in the world we just can't accommodate everyone who wants to come here. It may have also escaped your notice that we haven't just shrugged our shoulders when it comes to taking in refugees from war torn countries!!

Cornettoninja · 17/08/2022 09:25

Georgeskitchen · 16/08/2022 21:43

Do any of you realise that this is not something dreamed up by the UKs cruel taskmasters? Many other countries do this, including EU countries. Many of these coming over the Channel are Albanian males. They are not fleeing persecution and we have no obligations towards them.

You’re right, this policy wasn’t even an original idea. Israel did the the exact same thing with Rwanda and it was an utter shit show. For some reason our government thought that was a green light to waste money on doing something that was already proven to be a money pit.

DashboardConfessional · 17/08/2022 10:59

We are nowhere near the most densely populated European country. Depending on where you research we are 8th or 10th.

OriginalUsername2 · 17/08/2022 11:06

You only have to watch a few minutes of parliament in action to get that! We’re mere peasants to them.
