That 10 days is the holy grail holiday (not bloody 14 - when will I learn!)

Every single time we go on a European sun / beach / villa / complex type holiday, we book it for 14 days and every single time I get to about day 10 and am fed up and want to be at home. I've nothing to complain about except the bed is a bit uncomfortable and I should enjoy my last 3 days of sun and relaxing - but all I can think about is that if I'd bloody remembered and booked 10 days, we'd be flying home tomorrow and I could have had a few days at home in my own bed before going back to work....

I never feel like this on far flung holidays with a packed itinerary etc and holidays are always a few years between so I obviously forget and get all giddy with the booking.....

Totally agree 10 days is perfect

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2022 18:53

16 days to add the weekend on the end is perfect.

Why shouldn't a European holiday have a packed itinerary just like longhaul. Maybe just go somewhere with a bit more to do?

We always have stuff left over that we didn't get to do despite having gone places every day.

DangerouslyBored · 16/08/2022 19:00

10 days is the golden standard. 14 days is way too long. Having said that, we can only happily take a week now as we miss our dogs too much!

I’ve been to some incredible places but there is no place like home. I always love coming back. I really miss the UK for all it’s faults.

dementedma · 16/08/2022 19:04

Never done more than a week..thats plenty long enough for me

ChimChimeny · 16/08/2022 19:08

Id only do 2 weeks long haul (mainly Disney world) two weeks of a beach/pool/relaxing holiday is too long but a week never seems quite enough. Must remember to try 10 days!

MzHz · 16/08/2022 19:14

Just done 3 weeks, anything less is just too rushed :)

I used to agree but we did just over 3 weeks in Spain this year & it was bliss!

Please can I ask details of your holiday? Love Spain and had a too short 5 day one there last month. Planning a longer one for next year! TIA x

Jadech · 16/08/2022 19:18

I am on day 9 of 14 and ready to go home! Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this and that I'm being ungrateful for a 14 day holiday

Musicalmistress · 16/08/2022 19:24

@Takenoprisoner Nothing exciting I'm afraid! We hired an apartment in the vicinity of an area we've visited many times before as it's convenient for visiting some family members over there. So we had a few nights with each then still plenty of time to relax and enjoy being on 'holiday'. As we've been to the general area so often we've done most of the touristy/sightseeing things so was just very chilled, although we landed lucky with a local fiesta the middle weekend which we always seem to have missed in the past! Just the 2 of us (work in schools) and youngest DD15 this year so we're able to be more flexible with flights & accommodation etc.

HipsterCoffeeShop · 16/08/2022 19:30

For a normal sun sea relax holiday totally agree 10 days is the perfect length.

We're just leaving our 7 day holiday abroad and could really do with a couple more days!

howdidigethere · 16/08/2022 19:32

a European sun / beach / villa / complex type holiday

For me, this sort of holiday can get boring unless there's loads to do in the area so I'd be happy enough with 7 days but 10 can be a happy medium. Better still, 2 holidays of a week each or a proper long haul trip of 3-4 weeks but not many can get that amount of time off work.

CirreltheSquirrel · 16/08/2022 19:32

We almost always do around 10 days. This year we've pushed the boat out to 12 but 2 of those are on a ferry.

Bunnycat101 · 16/08/2022 19:33

We’ve had this debate. We did the Maldives for 12 nights for our honeymoon and didn’t want to leave. If we could have afforded longer that would have been wonderful. My husband refuses to go away for a week as he thinks he doesn’t relax so it’s pointless. I’ve got 13 nights booked for our break this year but slightly wishing had less as I don’t have enough time off to do the washing/random back to school jobs needed and need to pack of an evening after work.

10 days probably is ideal in a world with constrained annual leave. I reckon 14 days would feel relaxing for the OP if she had 3 weeks off. It’s all the time that is needed for jobs that makes a difference.

Lancelottie · 16/08/2022 19:38

Crikey. DH and I were just commenting that it takes him at least 10 days to unwind, so he only really appreciates the next three days (and then we waste the final one packing and travelling).

maddiemookins16mum · 16/08/2022 19:39

We finish work on a Friday next month, fly to Majorca Sat lunchtime, 11 nights, get back on the Thursday afternoon. Nice long weekend before work on the Monday. Works really well for us. We also plan something for the Sat night before back to work, off to see Les Mis at our local Theatre.

TrashPandas · 16/08/2022 19:39

I always do 14 and it's perfect for me. Enough to do everything I want to, but also at a stage where I don't feel shortchanged by having to go home.

MissAmbrosia · 16/08/2022 19:43

3 weeks is my ideal. Now dd is older this year we have done 1 week and have another 10 days planned. Without her. It will take some getting used to.

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/08/2022 19:54

We drive to Europe and stay in 2-4 different places over 12-28 nights. The longer the better for me!

Malad · 16/08/2022 20:03

I have recently been and found 10 days too long. It was way too hot for me though. 36 every day and every day was the same. I don’t really like all inclusive type holidays.

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2022 20:04

I like a 10 day holiday, it's just right for me.

Whataplanker · 16/08/2022 20:07

I only do 7! I miss my cats and my bed! Except when we did Florida - I managed 12 then!

Fink · 16/08/2022 20:09

2 weeks is ideal for me, but we don't do sun/beach/villa type holidays and I do think I'd get bored quite quickly staying in one location. We usually do 2-3 nights in a place then move on.

Onlyhuman123 · 16/08/2022 20:09

Am away on 14 day villa holiday.

Day 13 today. I cant bloody wait to fly home tmrw.

I said to DH today, I'm not doing 14 days again...7 perfect; 10 absolute maximum if we are able to afford to go away again in future.

I sound ungrateful but this is first villa holiday ever so didn't really know what to expect..

TokyoSushi · 16/08/2022 20:13

Yes definitely agree, we're just about to go to Greece for 9 which will be pretty much perfect. I'd be happy to do something like Florida Disney for 14 but otherwise it's too long for me.

Soproudoflionesses · 16/08/2022 20:15

Spot on op!
