That 10 days is the holy grail holiday (not bloody 14 - when will I learn!)

Every single time we go on a European sun / beach / villa / complex type holiday, we book it for 14 days and every single time I get to about day 10 and am fed up and want to be at home. I've nothing to complain about except the bed is a bit uncomfortable and I should enjoy my last 3 days of sun and relaxing - but all I can think about is that if I'd bloody remembered and booked 10 days, we'd be flying home tomorrow and I could have had a few days at home in my own bed before going back to work....

I never feel like this on far flung holidays with a packed itinerary etc and holidays are always a few years between so I obviously forget and get all giddy with the booking.....

Ps I've never stayed in the same hotel for 2 weeks, we are road trip people but we have discovered cruising, like road trips but your hotel comes with you. I need different things each day to do

shivawn · 19/08/2022 07:18

We normally do 17-18 days but always go somewhere new and have a packed itinerary with just a few lazy pool day scattered throughout. I'd do longer holidays but work can be awkward about giving 3 weeks off in a row.

Bretonbear · 19/08/2022 07:22

On day 16 out of 18 and I wanted to go home on day 7. A week is perfect for a holiday for me. I miss my cat too much and I've had days where all I'm doing is worrying about 4 teenagers being bored.

greenacrylicpaint · 19/08/2022 07:24

I agree.
plus tackling the mountain of laundry before the rat run starts up again.

SummerLovin123 · 19/08/2022 07:30

God. I'd go for a month if I could.

theDudesmummy · 19/08/2022 07:32

Oh God no, I love longer! I work freelance now (and can work from anywhere, and do do some work while away) after 30 years tied to set and limited annual leave. Just back from a 5 week holiday and it was great (with DH and DS13). I feel very lucky to be able to do this. We go to the same place every year, which means real relaxation, as I know exactly what to expect.

KangarooKenny · 19/08/2022 07:34

I struggle to do 7 nights away from home, I’m a fan of 4 nights.

GnomeDePlume · 19/08/2022 07:34

I agree that 10 days does look appealing. We did 15 nights this year 2 of which were travelling then straight back to work. Next year we will try 10 nights.

In terms of time off work my conclusions are the following:

1 week is the worst, you come back to find unimportant things have turned into crises because everyone was waiting for you to deal with it when you got back next week. The crises have also had time to build up a head of steam.

2 weeks is okay as crises have already occurred so you are coming back into the mopping up operation.

3 weeks is optimal as any mopping up is done and people are getting used to solving their own problems.

4 weeks and people start solving each other's problems and management start to wonder if you are really necessary.

justusandmoo · 19/08/2022 07:37

I'm ALWAYS like this! This year we booked to stay in two different places over the 2 weeks though and it was much better.

Totally see what you mean though x

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 19/08/2022 07:45

I love a 10-dayer as well. Quite often we'll book 7 nights s/c to relax, and then 3 nights in a city hotel for sightseeing. I've purposely never done 14, because I like going home while wishing I could stay longer. I'd begrudge paying £££ and by day 12 feeling I were ready to leave. And like a previous poster I miss the cats Grin.

Never feel like this at all.

Snap.

I could easily go away for much longer than 14 days as it is.
We do 7 days at half terms but it goes way too quick. 10 days is fine but I prefer the full 14 days. Would love to be able to go away for even longer.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/08/2022 07:48

For me, it’s not about what there is or isn’t to do in the place I’ve gone on holiday to; it’s the fact that I get terribly homesick for my own bed and my own home comforts. I love being away and seeing somewhere new - but I want my own things around me even I go back to base at the end of the day 😂

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/08/2022 07:49

When, not even.

Abraxan · 19/08/2022 07:50

We don't often just stay in one location. Maybe that's why even 14 days doesn't always feel like enough and any longer would feel too short.

Sparklingbrook · 19/08/2022 08:00

UK & Europe, 7 days is enough for me. Long haul-14 days to make it worth the long flight, but never wanted to stay anywhere longer than that.

TooHotToTangoToo · 19/08/2022 08:00

This was us on our last family holiday, couldn't wait for two weeks away, by day 10 everyone was ready to go home, even the dc were fed up of the pool and buffet type food

Summerlovin24 · 19/08/2022 09:45

I find this post hard to rea. Its all relative I suppose but after 3 days in a tent as my sole holiday this year I would love the opportunity of being fed up 10 days into a 14 day holiday. Burnt out and fed up and skint.

Bretonbear · 19/08/2022 09:46

My husband implies that I'm boring because I miss home after about 5 days. I don't think all the social media photos of other families having 'the best time ever' help much either. I sometimes wish people would post reality about holidays on social media. That would be funny.

bloghu · 19/08/2022 10:51

Just did 10 days in Spain, it was lovely but kind of wish we'd done 5 days in one place and then 5 in another as it did get a bit samey.
