To think that fruit salad shouldn't have grapefruit in?

We went away at the weekend for a family trip. Hotel was lovely and had all inclusive breakfast and lunches including big fruit salad.

Great, except that it was full of grapefruit, and all four of us are on (different) medications which mean we can't eat it.

AIBU to say that given the number of people who are on statins, blood pressure medication, anti depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and god knows what else. And given that grapefruit is bloody horrible. That people making fruit salad for buffets should leave The Devil's Fruit out of it and offer it separately on the side for the unmedicated weirdos who like it.

I’d probably just take it out rather than worry about it tbh. But I like grapefruit- it’s a breakfast fruit.

Backtoreality1 · 16/08/2022 09:19

Love a fruit salad with grapefruit so yes you are being unreasonable. Just choose something else to eat

Beamur · 16/08/2022 09:20

The fact that it cannot be taken with certain medications would make it much more sensible to be served separately.

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 09:21

Grapefruit is disgusting I'd be picking it out. I totally agree with you as well as someone who has relatives on medication that can't have grapefruit, it should be separate.

Also Pomegranate is revolting-and yet that is finding it's way in too. Angry

WhiteFire · 16/08/2022 09:23

I agree it should be separate.

purplecorkheart · 16/08/2022 09:26

Yes it is very common for people not to be able to take it with their medication. I am surprised that they do not serve it seperately and then let people mix it if they wish.

Strangerthanever · 16/08/2022 09:26

Also agree it should be separate. DD and DH take different meds that can't be taken with grapefruit. My Mum takes another med which again is no grapefruit. Given that I don't have a particularly unhealthy family, this must actually be a common issue.

limitedperiodonly · 16/08/2022 09:30

I like grapefruit. I am on statins. Occasionally, I like to live dangerously.

I think it is. My Mum says it's good that it's grapefruit she can't have rather than something actually nice though. Grin

Sunnyqueen · 16/08/2022 09:32

I'm on quetiapine which you aren't supposed to take with grapefruit. I still have the odd bit now and then as I love it and nothings ever happened. I do think yabu just pick it out if you don't want to eat it like with anything.

purplepaintedpineapple · 16/08/2022 09:37

But there must be people who have allergies to different fruit so they can't do one for everyone? My friend is allergic to kiwi...

I think it's just that because of the medication thing there's likely to be more people not able to eat grapefruit than occasional individuals having allergies to certain fruits.

Lulu1919 · 16/08/2022 09:40

Grapefruit is a breakfast fruit I wouldn't put it in fruit salad....esp is having cream !!!!

ofwarren · 16/08/2022 09:40

My son is on immunosuppressive medications due to a transplant and he also can't have grapefruit. Neither can my mum, dad or older brother due to various different medicines.
It's to do with absorption. It increases the levels of lots of medication in your blood, so yes I agree it should be separate.

How many people are allergic to kiwi compared to how many people are on some form of medication though?

PonyPatter44 · 16/08/2022 09:42

I do like grapefruit and I feel it doesn't feature in enough fruit salads! You are all very welcome to pass your unwanted grapefruit to me.

ofwarren · 16/08/2022 09:43

Look how many medicines it interacts with. This list is not exhaustive either.

Ha I had a prescription that said "don't eat grapefruit while taking this medication" and I was wondering why on Earth I'd want to eat grapefruit anyway. It's grim.

Me too. When away for a weekend I love to have grapefruit which is usually served separately on the breakfast buffet on my museli. This happens maybe once twice a year and probably has little to no effect on my overall health. Also it has to be tinned grapefruit as one year it was fresh and I didn't really enjoy it but that's just me.

Yes, definitely worse if it said 'don't eat chocolate' Grin

I'd have to just abandon the meds and hope for the best Grin

torfa · 16/08/2022 09:54

I agree op, I can't have it due to medication either (I mean it's no great hardship - grapefruit is rank). They should have it in a separate bowl from the fruit salad so people can add it if they want to.

BertieBotts · 16/08/2022 09:56

I love grapefruit! I didn't know it interferes with medications. It probably wouldn't occur to me if I was making a fruit salad. Maybe they don't realise.

Strangerthanever · 16/08/2022 10:02

Tbh, I've only ever seen fruit salad at hotel breakfasts and all the fruits were separate, which seems the obvious way to go. I'm also one of those weirdos with a kiwi allergy, I've never actually met another in real life and wouldn't expect it to be left out of meals, as I realise I'm a minority. But grapefruit is a very common issue. People are unreasonable in disliking it though, it's gorgeous, even if it does turn your tongue inside out!
