To think that fruit salad shouldn't have grapefruit in?

We went away at the weekend for a family trip. Hotel was lovely and had all inclusive breakfast and lunches including big fruit salad.

Great, except that it was full of grapefruit, and all four of us are on (different) medications which mean we can't eat it.

AIBU to say that given the number of people who are on statins, blood pressure medication, anti depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and god knows what else. And given that grapefruit is bloody horrible. That people making fruit salad for buffets should leave The Devil's Fruit out of it and offer it separately on the side for the unmedicated weirdos who like it.

I agree, I randomly mentioned to a colleague once I couldn't eat grapefruit and he said the same, we were late 20s at the time on medication for different issues.

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 16/08/2022 10:04

I love grapefruit and keep forgetting that I am not supposed to have it. But a good breakfast buffet should include several different sliced fruits, presented separately.

PussGirl · 16/08/2022 10:09

I like grapefruit but wouldn't put it in fruit salad - too sour & it's better as a breakfast or a starter I think

I don't like banana in fruit salad either - it goes all slimy.

5foot5 · 16/08/2022 10:09

When I saw your thread title I was going to say YANBU but then I saw you were talking about a breakfast buffet so I changed to YABU. Grapefruit is lovely and refreshing for breakfast. If you don't like it or can't eat it because of meds then surely you can just pick out the bits of grapefruit and leave them? After all it's not like a nut allergy or something where even contamination needs to be avoided.

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 10:17

I think if you’re making it yourself sure, chuck in all the grapefruit you want. But in a hotel or self serve buffet where there will be lots of people needing (or wanting!)to avoid it just have it separately. It wouldn’t be difficult to just have a separate bowl.

Hotandbothereds · 16/08/2022 10:24

I had no idea that so many medications react with grapefruit- you learn something new every day!

But, yabu - lots of people can’t eat all sorts of things for all kinds of reasons - as long as it’s obvious what’s in something and it’s not incorrectly labelled it’s the person’s responsibility to check whether they can have it or avoid it if they can’t.

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 10:27

A big neon ‘Contains Grapefruit’ on the bowl would be an excellent start.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2022 10:36

How can one fruit be simultaneously sour, astringent, and bitter — and be loved by millions of wronguns?

Of course it shouldn't be in fruit salad. I don't care if some people like to be "refreshed" in the morning by getting hit in the head with a pith-flavoured wave of pure acid, the rest of us might like something that tastes of fruit Grin

Grapefruit should be orbited into space, and never returned!! There isn't enough sugar in the world to disguise the taste of it

BertieBotts · 16/08/2022 11:04

But some people like bitter flavours. I also enjoy coffee, bitter lemon, and gin for example. The combination with sour is excellent Grin

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2022 11:09

And the astringency? Is that just the, er, cherry on top, to get a bit seventies about it?

Oh and then there's the pleathery intersegmental skin, which if it gets in your mouth has a texture more reminiscent of extra-thick crisp packet than anything vegetal.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2022 11:12

Coffee, bitter lemon and gin, all delicious (though I do like a little sweetener in my coffee). Grapefruit? The most inconceivably unpalatable monstrosity that could possibly resulted from crossing an orange (delightful) and a pomelo (wonderful).

Abraxan · 16/08/2022 11:12

I love grapefruit.

Since being on blood pressure medication I'm supposed to be careful having it. Doctor says I can have a bit - when I questioned it, I wasn't told beforehand - but to not have excess amounts. So I'd be fine with having a small amount such as in a fruit salad.

Sad that I can no longer enjoy a full grapefruit for breakfast or big glasses of grapefruit juice - used to enjoy the latter when on holiday and someone else had don't the prep!

I'm loving your descriptions 🤣

It isn't just grapefruit either. A fair number of particularly citric fruits are the same.

It's also mainly the fruit juice that can cause the issue, more so than the whole fruit iirr.

This is true
My sons transplant team say no Saville oranges, pomegranate or passion fruit.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2022 11:24

No pomegranate? ShockSad

I'm guessing that's because of anti-rejection drugs or something, so it's for life?

pigsDOfly · 16/08/2022 11:24

I love grapefruit, the yellow ones, not the nasty insipid pink rubbish, but not in a fruit salad that's just wrong.

Unfortunately I can't have them because of the medication I'm on and I really miss them.

Yeah
It's just what they told us before leaving the hospital.
Saville oranges make marmalade too so he can't have that Sad

Sparklingbrook · 16/08/2022 09:46

Yes, definitely worse if it said 'don't eat chocolate' Grin

I used to take meds that meant I couldn't eat aged cheese (and a long list of other things that people don't get so dramatic about). A lot of people would be horrified — I was quietly pleased because the only cheeses I like are ones like cream cheese and mozzarella, and I finally had a good excuse to avoid the pongy stuff Grin

What an arse of a restriction Sad I mean, I guess it might seem petty to complain about marmalade in the greater scheme of things, but still, it's an arse.

pastapestoparmesan · 16/08/2022 11:33

I’m on no grapefruit meds and I’m allergic to kiwi! Can’t stand either so it’s not really a problem!

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2022 11:34

No fruit salad for you.

You'll just have to have cake.

He's only 8 and being tested for autism. He enjoyed the Paddington bear thing with the Queen at the jubilee and was devastated he couldn't have a marmalade sandwich.

MerryMarigold · 16/08/2022 12:02

Well who knew this was a 'thing'? I'm not on any of the listed meds but a PP suggested antidepressants couldn't mix with grapefruit! I love grapefruit but I don't have it much anyway.
