Purely and shamelessly posting here for traffic, but today i strapped on a pair of roller skates and went out for a skate for the first time in about 20 years -since my late teens …
These are the beauties down below , I’ve been practicing indoors for last few days to make sure I could still stop etc . Tonight I picked a quiet time , strapped on the padding , and just thought fuck it - it’s now or never …
I did fall , a couple of grazes but nothing of importance or that could diminish the utter joy Id forgotten you felt in those gliding moments …

Just wondering if anyone on here skates ?? A few people think I’m mad for starting again , but I only gave up when I was 17 cos I thought I was too cool for it , and now I am realising how stupid I was .

I’d love to be able to do it again, to have no fear.

Halfarsedjingler · 07/08/2022 20:33

One of my favourite things in the world, I really need to do it more regularly. Thanks for the reminder.
Those are beautiful skates!

mycatisannoying · 07/08/2022 20:37

Gorgeous skates!

I went roller skating not so long ago with my wee niece and nephew. I am pretty overweight and not sporty at all. But they were amazed by my whizzing around the place. They even held on to my coat tails at one point cos they were rubbish Grin
I may not have rollerskated for 40 years, but you don't lose it completely!

BringOnSummerHolidays · 07/08/2022 20:40

Where do you normally skate? I haven’t been able to find anywhere with a smooth surface outdoors. Or do you all live near roller rinks?

Ohh don’t get me wrong the fear has been there - Its the strangest feeling - hence practicing inside. When I first strapped them on the muscle memory was all still there but the sensible adult in me was like woah what are we doing - but I have wanted something just for me , and I hate running and I’m a little bored of walking .
In all honesty I felt less fear once that first fall was out the way , wrist pads are a must and I’d watched a few YouTube videos to remind myself if you feel unsteady crouch low and aim to land on natural padding 😂

Gorgeous skates.

I'd love a pair, but the pavements/park paths around here are really uneven, so not sure it would be possible.

I have a few smooth paths I’d scouted out for routes and when I’m braver there is the park .. but for now it’s mainly car parks and the roads I’d walked and knew well . Also living room has been my own personal roller disco past few days !!

Yes, I went to a roller skating rink place, if that's the right word.

They’re lovely!

Check your local leisure centre in case they have roller skating sessions, ours does weekly sessions and I was amazed at how many family groups went (moms and dads with their own skates!), they also have over 16 years sessions with music that’s very popular.

SpencersCroftCat · 07/08/2022 20:47

Hundreds of people do it. Check out your nearest roller derby team :)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/08/2022 20:47

There's a wee community leisure centre in our nearest town that does roller skating sessions, and monthly roller discos. The dc and I used to go once a month or so, but not since lockdown. Planning to go again this holidays.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/08/2022 20:47

PS fabulous skates @LuckyXhi

jinxyminxy · 07/08/2022 20:50

I had a pair for my birthday. I hadn't been skating since I was about 12. There's a roller disco near where I live, so I've become a regular. It's been amazing.

Thank you - they are the kind of skates I always wanted instead of hand me downs … I wanted the yellow version originally but not in my size sadly .

There is nothing organised by me , at least 30 miles away the closest . Drawback of market town life , so I’m happy to settle with just the street skating for now .

I take my kids to the local leisure centre for skating they love it but the little one needs my help so no chance for me to have a go .....which is probably just as well

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/08/2022 20:54

They're lovely OP, and I'm very jealous that you can skate!

I used to roller blade when I was a pre-teen. They still fit me and I was eyeing them up the other day. But I never could stop - I just used to crash into something I could grab hold of, like a lamp post, if I was going downhill Grin or just run out of steam if I was on the flat.

I've been watching some videos of how to stop and I just feel like I'd inevitably end up sliding across the tarmac on my face, so back in the loft they go.

JingsMahBucket · 07/08/2022 20:58

@LuckyXhi those skates are BEAUTIFUL. Just looking at them fills me with joy, I couldn’t imagine how great you feel wearing them! Have fun wheeling around!

No don’t put them back … have you tried the plough method for stopping (I think it’s called tht) before I was comfortable letting the muscles do their thing and guiding me to a stop I was using that …

Aww thank you … I’ve found it reassuring there’s a lot more people out there doing it. I was worried and probably still am a little that I will get some funny looks

MassiveSalad22 · 07/08/2022 21:05

Ohhhh so cool 😍 I have never skated in my life but been meaning to try and learn this summer - DH and DS both do roller/ice hockey and DH has a spare pair of rollerblades, and we have a big empty garage so no excuse really. You’ve inspired me! Tomorrow I skate!!

KangarooKenny · 07/08/2022 21:10

I think mine were a turquoise blue with red, white and yellow stripe at the ankle. I lived on them !

WorkshyHorsefly · 07/08/2022 21:14

I would so go out with you! I used to do the school run on skates, with dd on her bike. It was ace.

Put on the music and go for it !!! I’m so glad I gave in to the impulse, genuinely my legs have felt more of a burn than any workout has given me in a longtime !
