Roller Skating

Purely and shamelessly posting here for traffic, but today i strapped on a pair of roller skates and went out for a skate for the first time in about 20 years -since my late teens …
These are the beauties down below , I’ve been practicing indoors for last few days to make sure I could still stop etc . Tonight I picked a quiet time , strapped on the padding , and just thought fuck it - it’s now or never …
I did fall , a couple of grazes but nothing of importance or that could diminish the utter joy Id forgotten you felt in those gliding moments …

Just wondering if anyone on here skates ?? A few people think I’m mad for starting again , but I only gave up when I was 17 cos I thought I was too cool for it , and now I am realising how stupid I was .

I would so go out with you! I used to do the school run on skates, with dd on her bike. It was ace.

Wow now I’m in awe … I wish I had someone close by - how far away are you from Oxfordshire 😂

I don't remember skating, I know my friends had skates in the 80s/90s but I don't think I did. Or maybe I was so bad that I've blocked it from my mind! I really want to try it though but think I'll just look like a twat. However the beauty of your boots is encouraging me to just go for it. Where did you buy them if you don't mind me asking?

Eunorition · 07/08/2022 21:21

It became really popular in my city with women setting up groups and going out skating together. I went and did skateboarding lessons too.

Never cared what others think and not gonna start now. Skating's great fun.

I wonder if the poster who told me I’m too old to skateboard on a different thread will come here and tell you you’re too old too.

Nope don’t mind you asking at all , they are from skate hut they have a sale on at the mo- for skates , wrist guards and next day delivery I paid just under £80 I think .
I did look at ones on Amazon but I remembered enough to know I needed good ankle support and these are so solid . Also I got a 7 one size up from my usual.

You skateboard ?? Now I’m jealous and envious 😯
I always wanted too, but I never had the courage .

Well I did feel maybe I was a little too old hence this thread really or that I looked stupid , but the enjoyment I’ve had since Wednesday- I genuinely don’t care or I’m trying not too - either way I won’t be stopping !

I had in-line skates when I was young. I googled roller disco in my area and there is one but they ban inlines! I have no idea why it’s considered dangerous? I remember much preferring inlines when I was young.

I have not find anywhere flat and smooth here.

I picked up ice skating now and I really love it. But would be great to be able to skate more locally.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 08/08/2022 11:40

It is really never too old. I started ice skating in my 40s. Being able to skate when I was young helps so I wasn’t falling flat on my face when I entered the rink. But I was stiff!

Elderemo · 08/08/2022 11:53

Have a look if you have a Roller Derby team near by OP :) They have intakes for fresh players and it's a great way to skate, stay fit, and be part of an amazing community.

minipie · 08/08/2022 11:59

Ooh this thread has given me a kick. I have my sister’s old roller blades in a cupboard and have been meaning to try them out. I’ve never roller bladed but can ice skate ok so I presume it’s the same …?!

They are not beautiful like yours OP though!

Toddlerteaplease · 08/08/2022 12:14

Would love to skate but nowhere smith enough near me. Though the hospital I work in has 27 miles of interlinked corianders. So that could be an option 🤔

I’ve ice skated on and off over the years and always felt comfortable on the ice and always put that down to spending so much time skating in my younger years . I think it’s the core balance you never forget and I’m sure you will be fine .
So many great videos on YouTube too !

Haha who would know if you stayed late after shift and gave it a go !!! I’ve loved pushing the furniture aside and having the music on in my front room on the wooden floors

I hadn’t thought of roller Derby and there is one in Oxford that apparently welcomes newcomers so thank you . I’ve been a bit lost trying to find anything local like roller discos .

Those are beautiful skates!

I feel this way about ice skating, 'd love to go again but I have size 9 extra fat feet so cannot find any skates that. Hire skates are crap and also kill my feet because they are too narrow. It's my dream to start skating again but I don' t know where on earth I'd find skates to fit my obese feet.

Enjoy it!

Aww I’m sorry, I genuinely feel your disappointment . Have you looked online for wide fitting skates ? I’m sure there must be some … My left foot I’ve had to strap up around the big toe for some extra padding as I was getting a lot of pinching there where my feet are shaped rather like flippers and I’m length wise a size 5 but have these in a 7 .

We have sessions at the local leisure centre with music and games - I love going with my daughters. It’s so much fun, really lovely atmosphere and I love the free feeling of skating.

I got these skates for my birthday last month and - I just love them! www.rookieskates.com/en/rookie-rollerskates-rookie-x-coca-cola-love-white

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/08/2022 13:11

You should try a roller disco. We go to Roller Nation in North London - they put on family sessions on weekends. Great for a rainy afternoon, DS(7) and his friends love it, as do the mums.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/08/2022 13:31

ohhh i got the same skates from my husband for my birthday last year :)

I love them

I went to a roller disco with some friends recently haha

OneTC · 08/08/2022 14:16

Was planning on starting again this summer but I'm injured so I'm still investigating what skates to get.

Thanks op and the other poster for sharing where you got your boots. If anyone is in Cardiff and sees a fat 41yr old woman wobbling past, or careering out of control, give me a wave 😂

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 08/08/2022 23:43

I bought some on Facebook a couple of years ago. Whenever I put them on I realised I was about to go on holiday or to a job interview etc and couldn’t afford a broken bone, so barely used them! This has reminded me to get them out, thank you. They’re not as beautiful as yours but I love them.

I used to wear them all the time as a kid, we lived at the top of a hill and I’d just skate down the hill on them and stop at the bottom by clinging on to a wall or fence Grin no fear!

Wish I could feel like that again.

Roller Derby could be the way forward - I always liked the idea of a fight club and this could combine the two!

LankylegsFromOz · 09/08/2022 00:50

Good on you! I started again last year as well and I'm 50. I love it!

JamMakingWannaBe · 20/11/2022 11:57

I took my daughter to a roller disco yesterday and I loved it.

Seriously considering getting my own pair of skates. There are some barely used pairs on eBay and Vinted. Should I go for Moxi or Rio Rollers?

I'm planning to be inside over the Winter but could potentially switch wheels for outside in the Summer.

I would say I am a returning amateur. I have decent balance so can skate forward but can't (yet) do anything else. I plan to go to some lessons in the New Year.
