About a rubbish dinner

WoIsMe · 07/08/2022 19:53

My DH made dinner today which was roast pork leg and gravy with cherry tomatoes in vinaigrette. It was really weird the way the cold vinaigrette mingled with the hot gravy. AIBU to think that this is a rubbish meal?

Sounds v odd. Who would have a salad dish mixing with hot roast dinner??

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2022 20:11

Pork and tomatoes, was that it?

No potatoes or another carb, or another vegetable or two?

Was this the first time he'd eaten food so he's never seen a meal before?

WoIsMe · 07/08/2022 21:13

Yep Barbara, it was hot pork, cold tomatoes and gravy. That’s it.

Shock Has he lost his mind?

Two sauces but no vegetables apart from tomatoes?

What does he normally cook?

WaitingForWinter1 · 07/08/2022 21:20

That's a crap dinner, to be honest. Perhaps he's hoping you'll never allow him to make dinner again.

Antarcticant · 07/08/2022 21:22

This thread might cheer you up, OP. Yours was like a banquet compared to some on here!

Ummm... no potatoes ?? Or rice... sounds lacking in something definitely

toomuchlaundry · 07/08/2022 21:24

Did you have other vegetables available?

What is the weather like with you? Too hot today for a roast where we are. Did he think maybe it was too hot for a full roast and tried to compromise with a really weird combination

Cherchezlaspice · 07/08/2022 21:37

🤣🤣🤣

diddl · 07/08/2022 21:44

Where was the rest of it?

maras2 · 07/08/2022 22:10

Gravy.
On salad. 😱
Dirty bastard. 😡

ouch321 · 07/08/2022 22:21

A random mix and incomplete to boot.

kittenkipping · 07/08/2022 22:29

Tomato's in vinaigrette? At the height of summer? Yum! Yes!

Pork and gravy for a nice Sunday lunch? I'm in. Delicious.

But never the Twain should meet Shock

Whoops1 · 07/08/2022 22:32

Ooh I love hot food and gravy with cold vinaigrette veg. Yum!

Whoops1 · 07/08/2022 22:32

Also love someone else cooking so definitely wouldn’t complain!

HeddaGarbled · 07/08/2022 22:39

It’s an odd combination, but I expect Heston Blumenthal had some misses on the road to bacon and egg ice cream et al.

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/08/2022 22:41

I'd be off to the chippy.

😂😂 Was it the first thing he saw in the fridge/cupboards? Also, it needed a couple of good sized sweet (hot'n', steaming) spuz 🍠

mrsfollowill · 07/08/2022 22:48

So odd! either have hot or cold pork with salad type stuff (not just tomatoes!) and maybe a baked potato/ nice bread - or hot pork and roast potatoes/ hot veg/gravy etc. Would depend on the weather in this house. Or I would bin it off and get a Chinese takeaway instead- did you eat it?

WoIsMe · 08/08/2022 07:18

I did eat it mrsfollowill but it was a bit grim.

Toomuchlaundry weirdly he gave the kids steamed green beans instead of tomatoes so I could potentially have had two veg (although it was all served up beforehand so it would have meant stealing from the children’s plates.) If it had been pork with roasted cherry tomatoes and steamed green beans that would have been fine.

He made lunch for me as well which was a “salad” of cherry tomatoes with a dressing made from milk, flour, mustard and tarragon vinegar.

I’d have put the pork on a butty and asked where my real tea was.

IceStationZebra · 08/08/2022 07:26

Madness. Roast meat with salad is often a good compromise for those who like a Sunday roast but the weather’s too hot for it, but third is a big nope.

WoIsMe · 08/08/2022 07:28

Oh those poor people on that thread Antarcticant I love food so I find bad food very depressing. Last week he made Chicken Kiev and braised celery and I said at the time it wasn’t enough food and could he have cooked something else as well but clearly the message didn’t get through.

Well, that is quite a drip feed! LTB, no one should have to be subjected to an abomination of a bechamel and vinaigrette fusion. Urgh.

WoIsMe · 08/08/2022 07:39

To be fair, GCAcademic he had just bought a new Nigella Lawson cook book and was keen to try out some of the recipes. It looked nice on the page but was a bit bland. He's actually a very good cook; the roast pork was lovely with lots of crackling and the tomatoes were nice too. It was only the hot-cold combination and lack of variety that let the meal down. I don't even know whether he enjoyed it himself but I don't want to ask as he hates to be criticised.
