Just been blackberry picking. Do people still do this as there where plenty there? Free fruit.
Does everyone just buy them now or do you still go picking?

I don't think you are the only person who goes blackberry picking.

DDivaStar · 07/08/2022 16:27

Wecwent at the weekend, its actually quite early for blackberries. Alot of people might not think to go for a week or 2. Where we went there were ripe berries but also some still to ripen.

Not early. We got loads. If you go too late they die.

I have made ten jars of jam eight packets in the freezer for winter crumbles plus some for the fridge.

Soubriquet · 07/08/2022 16:31

Lots of people do it. Dd does it on her way to school. Not now though as obviously we are broken up but she always grabbed some blackberries on the way

WinterMusings · 07/08/2022 16:31

Good reminder thanks!

seems so early, but I guess it's not!!

Unglamorousgranny · 07/08/2022 16:31

We go every year & pick wild damsons too. Did you get good berries with this drought being so long?

Bubblebubblebah · 07/08/2022 16:32

It's just start of the season. Agree with pp that most people go later. I usually do as well

Ratched · 07/08/2022 16:33

I pick while dog walking and pop in freezer till I have a load.
God knows what people think seeing me carrying full to bursting point poo bags into the house

FourChimneys · 07/08/2022 16:33

One of the main topics on my local Facebook page this past couple of weeks has been where the best blackberries are.

Also photos of jam, pies etc, and offers of/requests for apples and plums.

DH and I are going on our third blackberry picking walk of the season this evening. I am planning to make jam tomorrow.

Yes. Always loads more at the top of the Bush looking nice that you can't get to though.

If there are loads about and they arent coming from someones private property then go for it! Seen someone the other day picking some on the side of the road ☺️

whoruntheworldgirls · 07/08/2022 16:39

Yep we'll be going next weekend, using them and our plums to make plum and blackberry gin

WonderingWanda · 07/08/2022 16:40

Yes, I love blackberrying. Take a litter picker and small step so you can pull high branches down and reach up a bit further!

DappledThings · 07/08/2022 16:41

I think it's early too. Seen a lot of bushes where about 10% of them are ripe.

Very bizarre sight this morning where a family of three had wandered out of the leisure centre, into a public park in matching towels to pick blackberries. Very odd.

I think PP means in terms of the standard ‘season’ for Blackberries- and they really are appearing early compared to that.

JustKeepLookingWithYourEyes · 07/08/2022 16:41

I pick them on my evening walk and give them to DC with their breakfast in a morning, both of mine love berries so it saves me a fortune! 😁

RainyDays22 · 07/08/2022 16:42

I grow them in my garden. They aren't ready yet, verrrrrry early for blackberries.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 07/08/2022 16:42

Yes. We are very lucky to have a field with lots of blackberries next door to our house and every day this week we have been able to send the DC out with a basket to pick our pudding. It’s going to be a good season this year; lots already but masses still to come over the coming weeks.

Choopi · 07/08/2022 16:42

It's too early where I am, they aren't ripe yet but yes when they are we do pick them. I would never pay the extortionate supermarket prices for something I can pick for free.

Everything coming good early this year, probably because of the strange weather

Coastalcreeksider · 07/08/2022 16:44

I've been picking them in the access way at the back of my house. There's loads and I have the scratches and thorns in my fingers to prove it.

I made a blackberry bakewell sponge, lovely with custard. 😁

Randomuser9876 · 07/08/2022 16:45

Doesn't it depend where you are?

Were quite a few in London suburbs last week but less in Yorkshire this week. We usually see ours in September but seem earlier this year.

My family love blackberry picking! Annual tradition.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/08/2022 16:46

Too early here, they need a couple more weeks.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 07/08/2022 16:48

It’s the norm for the first wave to be ripe at beginning of August here (English Midlands). The season generally lasts to mid September.
