Just been blackberry picking. Do people still do this as there where plenty there? Free fruit.
Does everyone just buy them now or do you still go picking?

Ripe here in NW. Dd spotted some on a small green round the corner from us but not on any of our usual walking routes.

We popped round this afternoon and got a tub full (and what dc ate on the way round) used half for crumble and rest in the freezer. We'll head back in the week sometime, there were tonnes we only spent about 10 minutes picking.

girlfriend44 · 07/08/2022 22:37

I try not to eat until we have got home and washed them.

I’m put off blackberries because there are always flies feasting on them.

Georgieporgie29 · 07/08/2022 19:42

So do you just wash them and eat? Also, can you point me in the right direction of some recipes? I think I might go and pick myself some blackberries

Wash and eat. Or we do crumble.

1lb of fruit
Some sugar (about a cup depending on the sourness)
A sprinkle of flour (and cinnamon if you like that)
Topping is brown sugar, flour, porridge oats and butter crumbed together and put on top.
Bake and eat (with ice cream)

Or a bottle of vodka, a lb of sugar and lots of blackberries. Jar together and wait until Christmas for lovely blackberry vodka and yummy boozy blackberries for ice-cream or fool.

Yes, and I soaked mine in water for a bit and had all tiny maggots wriggling out of them! Haven't touched one since!

Completely harmless, happens to most soft fruit and if you're squeamish, just soak in water.

I'd rather eat harmless protein than ultra-processed food.

Miss blackberry picking and the apple and blackberry crumble afterwards. I live in Sweden now and where I am the free range berries are red currants. They are everywhere. I like them but a lot up here don't.

MrsDThomas · 08/08/2022 06:51

Its not too early. If they are ready, pick them. Last year i got just under 10kg. I make jam and crumble, and add apples to the crumble, free from my friend.

i also walk up the mountain for bilberries.

Thinkingblonde · 08/08/2022 07:00

Too early here in North Yorkshire, another couple of weeks I reckon.

Ooh sounds lovely, thank you

BarrelOfOtters2 · 08/08/2022 07:30

Too early yet where we are. Also it’s been so dry not sure how great they’ll be. Bilberries ready here now….

Soak them so the maggots crawl out then lift them out of the water. Repeat.

That's pretty much all fruit though isn't it? It's just that you don't see it if you buy it in Tesco.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 08/08/2022 09:24

Ours are just ripening around here so we will be picking some over the next couple of weeks.

As others have said please leave some for the wildlife - they need them more than you do!!!

DelurkingLawyer · 08/08/2022 09:32

Lots of brambles where I am and they are ready and taste great. The hot weather has ripened them and the drought seems to have made no difference. Made a crumble and some blackberry sorbet and have eaten loads.

Wilkolampshade · 08/08/2022 09:37

Can't see blackberries without hearing this :

(It's 'Blackberry Picking, by Seams Heaney for those who don't want to click the link.)
We studied it for O level English Lit I think. Learnt it off by heart all those years ago and it sticks with me still.

Here it is:

Blackberry Picking, Seamus Heaney.

Late August, given heavy rain and sun
For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
Among others, red, green, hard as a knot.
You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet
Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it
Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for
Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger
Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots
Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.
Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills
We trekked and picked until the cans were full
Until the tinkling bottom had been covered
With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned
Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered
With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.
We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.
But when the bath was filled we found a fur,
A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.
The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush
The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.
I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair
That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.
Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

Phos · 08/08/2022 09:49

We do it loads. We live in semi rural location so plenty around here. If we pass blackberry bushes with some ripe ones when out walking, we'll grab a few for eating there and then but often make special trips out with the Tupperware too.

Round by us it's usually late August for best crops. I'm in the north though so probably later than southern areas.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/08/2022 10:07

There is a reason half term in October used to be called Blackberry Week.

Far too early in the borders but do it every year.

TheKeatingFive · 08/08/2022 10:14

We were surprised to find lots of ripe ones last week (ROI, in Cork) but put it down to the hot weather in July.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 08/08/2022 10:15

Checked our local area today, still very green round here.

MintJulia · 08/08/2022 10:16

I go blackberry picking with DS who loves them. I bottle them and we have them with shortbread or ice cream, or in puddings through the winter. It costs nothing except a bit of sugar and some jam jars. 40 jars usually sees us through to next season.

I also pick & toast hazel nuts and bottle them in syrup. Fabulous in winter salads with cheese, or in cakes.

I love free food 🤗

larkstar · 08/08/2022 10:23

Damsons, bullace, sloe, blackberries - we share the dog walking and longer in a town surrounded by countryside - every year we collect berries to make jam, conserve and jelly - I get all of the seeds out of blackberries (redcurrants, etc) to make jelly using the finest sieve with this piece is kitchen hardware - it's an effort to do it but the jelly is far nicer to eat than blackberry jam with the seeds IMHO.

Howdypip77 · 08/08/2022 10:26

We have LOADS near me atm in SE London although have to be quick as they are drying out really quickly. Normally come out Mid September.

Weve been picking a few times - the rule is they have to go in an empty ice cream tub like my Nan and Grandad used to do.

DH already made a lovely jam.

larkstar · 08/08/2022 10:27

Much to the dogs annoyance I stop for an hour to pick and fill 2 plastic take away cartons (easy to carry on my rucksack when walking the dog) - they hold 500g of fruit each. I think it is a bit earlier in the year them normal but... you grab them when you can.
