So at work . Since the pandemic and we do a few days in the office and a few at home , I feel like people just mindlessly chat absolute shite.

on Wednesday I was in with a lady who felt the need to say something every 5 mins FOR 8 HOURS! Like seriously ! Why can’t you just be quiet . (None was work related)

It may be something to do with I work at home with Children (they don’t) so I don’t feel like I get time to properly concentrate on the job in hand . Which I love too , just get stuck in, and go into my zone without someone constantly wanting to show me crap on their phone of talk utter dribble !

AIBU? Any suggestions without shouting SHUT THE FUCK UP …. Which I was close to the other day , I lasted 8 hours without strangling her, GO ME!

I feel sorry for her, having to share an office with someone as angry as you!

OhGoodnessItsSoExhausting · 06/08/2022 18:16

I love a buzzing office. If I need to focus I take myself off somewhere. Is there a side room you can go work in?

Helpful , thank you . I’m not angry at all I just want to concentrate on work. Not chat about her friends, sisters cousins dog ! Nice one for your input tho 👍🏻

If you can’t handle a bit of chit chat maybe the office isn’t the place for you?

tbh I’m surprised she bothers talking to you considering how you come across in your post!!

you clearly don’t mind a bit of online chat!

AnomalousChallenge · 06/08/2022 18:18

Sounds annoying as fuck. Headphones?

Malariahilaria · 06/08/2022 18:20

Would drive me mad. Did drive me mad when I had to work in an office 5 days a weeks. Covid has some silver linings now I'm rarely in an office. Why can't people just do their work nice and quietly?

I don’t know why people have to be so negative , when all I wanna do is work. After all that’s why we get paid to do isn’t it ?

I don’t mind the odd chat but when it’s all day it’s too much , I get On Well with her but when it’s just us 2 in the office it’s too much .

when there is other people in she will spread the chat with them. I’m a very approachable and friendly person that’s why I feel there is so much chat .

That’s the thing , it even continues then , I do put the in and end up giving up to pause all the time , I’ll keep trying them tho and maybe get the hint - thank you 🙏🏼

OP, did you tell her you needed to concentrate and ask her to give you some time to focus? I think I would just tell her you need to concentrate so probably won’t be paying attention when she talks.

It would annoy the life out of me too. If she wouldn’t shut up, I’d have to either wear headphones or be a more blunt.

Ah thank you someone like me , yeah it’s like I’m probably not the best multi tasker so when I get interrupted I feel I have to start again, and internally as day goes on I get more wound up .

she must know she talks too much as when boss is on she doesn’t .

thank you for response 🙏🏼

That’s deffo it I need to be more blunt for sure I know I really should , she’s a bit of a loud joker of the office so I don’t think she cares too much about her job , where as I know this sounds geeky but I do , and I have targets and she doesn’t really ….. I’ll give it a go next Wednesday … wish me luck.

I'm like you OP constant whittering drives me mad. It is so distracting. I struggle to concentrate at the best of times but the inane drivel does my head in. I'm screaming in my head shut up I don't bloody care!

WeeHaggisFace · 06/08/2022 18:31

My office is like this, I've just said "I'm really sorry not being rude but I'm really busy and need to concentrate of this".

I do then make an effort to chat over coffee mid morning, for a little bit at lunch, I usually go for a walk but invite others to join, and a coffee mid afternoon.

Snowraingain · 06/08/2022 18:33

I now give a work colleague a lift to work. She doesn’t stop talking
and I give her a lift home. Its a nightmare.
45 minutes each way. I used to listen to an audio book or mad music. Now….:…….

Yep I’m really horrible that I just want to get on with my job , I love a little chat , but when someone goes on and on all day as of they hate silence of any kind , it’s a bit grating to say the least .

And if we get stuck in traffic it can be an hour.

one day I’ll just get out the car and walk home.

🤷‍♀️ you work at home with kids, maybe she lives alone and has nobody to expel word vomit into? Not saying you're wrong, but if it bothers you get some soundproof headphones and tell her you're so sorry but got to do a complicated job. She can speak to others then

Stag82 · 06/08/2022 18:37

I put headphones in and pretend to be listening to something on line if I need to concentrate. I’m only in the office one day a week so don’t really mind the chat etc but as it’s a Monday I also don’t want to fall behind with work…

Hooveslikejagger · 06/08/2022 18:52

Can you move away from her?, change your day to avoid her (although I get that might not be doable), could you have a quiet word with your manager about her. It can be very distracting having to sit with someone with chats all day about utter drivel.

If you truly want blunt:

Please can you be quiet, I need to concentrate.

If she’s the office joker she might respond better to a humour approach:

Who put 50p in you today, you haven’t stopped talking. Can you be quiet please.

Do you remember the film Shrek, when donkey followed Shrek home and talked constantly? That’s what it is like sitting with you. Can you be quiet please.

She may never speak to you again though.

Ah you are brave I don’t think I could give someone a lift , that’s even harder especially in the morning ….. I think I’d build a little wall in the front like the black cabs 🤣
