Annoyed with "isn't it awful" boasting

I probably ABU but I'm getting really irritated with the trend of posting blue skies / pools / beach all with captions along the lines of "isn't it awful / pity me / having a terrible time" to which other people have to reply "oh yes, so sorry it's so horrible / sending thoughts and prayers". It happens every time and is so predictable. It's always the same people too. Middle class, a bit smug, photogenic children, usually gym bunnies. The same people who say things like "solid zero" or "Very good. Would recommend / use again" in normal conversation.

Eh?

JudithHarper · 06/08/2022 18:16

Thank goodness I don't do social media.

sportswife · 06/08/2022 18:22

What is "solid zero" when it's at home?

SausagePourHomme · 06/08/2022 18:28

I've never seen this. ever. sounds like it's just your friends

SeasonFinale · 06/08/2022 18:32

Have never seen anything like you describe. Perhaps change who you are following on SM?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 06/08/2022 18:34

Never seen this before 🤔

BitOutOfPractice · 06/08/2022 18:36

I have no idea what you’re talking about! I’m

AppleKatie · 06/08/2022 18:36

What’s wrong with ‘would recommend’? I mean solid zero is clearly nonsense (what does it mean?) but whether or not you would recommend something is surely normal speech Confused - particularly in the context of holidays.

Eiapopeia · 06/08/2022 18:37

@sportswife I was about to say "WTF is 'solid zero'"?

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/08/2022 18:38

🤔no not seen it

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 06/08/2022 18:40

I have never seen what you describe and I'm on Facebook all the time

EthicalNonMahogany · 06/08/2022 18:41

Yeah, it's all a bit meme-y isn't it? I'd just ignore them. I don't think they mean to be smug and show off, just perhaps wanting to share their glee at finally being somewhere hot and lovely but say something a bit funny too.

TeapotTitties · 06/08/2022 18:42

JudithHarper · 06/08/2022 18:16

Thank goodness I don't do social media.

Genuinely, this is not a social media problem 😂

It would appear the OP keeps strange online company.

BlueKaftan · 06/08/2022 18:42

I’ve never seen this either. You come across as wanting to bash the middle classes.

Corlegg · 06/08/2022 18:42

Fascinating. Maybe it's just a certain group on Insta then. I've seen the whole "this is awful" thing about 6 times on there in the last two weeks, from people who don't know each other & even people I follow but don't know, so not just my friends. I assumed it was just a "thing" that people do now. Obviously IABU. Sorry people.

Can you give an example?

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/08/2022 18:43

Don't do insta so don't know.

Lochjeda · 06/08/2022 18:44

Only thing I see is "had worse (insert day of the week)" then a photo of holiday. Doesnt bother me.

georgarina · 06/08/2022 18:46

I don't get the context. Is it sarcasm, or humble bragging? Need more info

MissMaple82 · 06/08/2022 18:52

What??

ohfook · 06/08/2022 18:56

Ok I know you're going to get a load of posts saying 'well you don't have to go on social media you know' etc etc

But I know exactly how you feel because I don't mind a scroll through Facebook and insta but I cannot stand posts that wish people happy birthday or happy anniversary but with a list of that person's negative qualities first. Something like: well you're stubborn, we drive each other mad and fight like cat and dog but I'd be lost without my amazing mum. Happy birthday to the one that's always there for me and the kids no matter what xxx

It drives me mad. Like don't wish someone happy birthday by showing all of Facebook that your relationship with them isn't great! Literally no one else I know in real life has even noticed this let alone cares but still I complain about it!

DrCoconut · 06/08/2022 19:02

I do know a few people who are quite boastful on social media about their flash lifestyles and I agree it is a bit tone deaf when so many are struggling, including people on their friend list. I wouldn't put all the details of my Caribbean cruise and constant meals out, new clothes etc on Facebook if people I knew would see them couldn't afford basics in life. I'm not saying people shouldn't have nice things or be excited and happy about them, just a bit more private or selective about who they share all the details with. There's a world of difference between "been on holiday, here's a few pics" and a more or less live feed of "look at every aspect of my ££££ stay in swanky resort".

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/08/2022 19:07

Change your friendship group? My friends are pretty much all MC and never have I heard them utter the phrase solid zero, or post dad jokes about holiday villas.

WaitingForWinter1 · 06/08/2022 19:09

No bloody idea what any of that means
