To be concerned and go to a&e

I've not been unwell other than feeling extremely tired all the time. I've woke up not that long ago to a slight crackle in my chest so i've gone to clear my throat, not hard or anything and I immediately taste blood in my mouth. I've not had a cough or bad chest in months so this is really random. I've spat into a tissue and there is blood, my throat has blood in it and i can just taste blood in my mouth now constantly. Im not scared to clear my throat again incase there is more. It wasn't a significant amount of blood but i'm still worried as it is so out of the blue!
Aibu to be worried and go A&e or should i just wait and see if i'm okay and stop being so dramatic?
And also has this ever happened to anyone else ?

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coughing-up-blood/
The NHS website says to call 111 in this senario

carefullycourageous · 06/08/2022 06:02

You are right to be concerned as you can't ignore blood, but I always follow the advice on NHS pages: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coughing-up-blood/ when deciding between GP and A&E.

JasmineVioletRose · 06/08/2022 06:23

I'd go op x

Squiff70 · 06/08/2022 06:40

Given that you don't feel unwell, I'd put A&E on the back burner for now (with the option to go later if you need to) and ring 111. You might need a chest x-ray to rule out a chest infection.

Two weeks ago, I coughed up a lump of brown stuff. I'm not a smoker and didn't think much of it. The following day I had a scratchy throat and coughed up from fresh, red blood. Later that day I did a lateral flow test and it was positive. The day after, my breathing deteriorated dramatically and I had to be admitted to HDU in hospital with very low sats and very high resps. They did a chest x-ray which showed I had Covid, but I had a chest infection on top. I needed oxygen and two lots of IV antibiotics and other stuff besides, and was kept in for a few days.

Don't mess with chests - you need to be looked at - but if you can you should take a lateral flow test before going to A&E or other medical establishment, just in case.

Of course, the blood night not be from your chest. It could be your throat or nose, but it has worried you so you'd be well within your rights to get a doctor to look at you.

No I wouldn't go. I'd call 111

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 06/08/2022 07:03

Call 111 for their advice first.

drawacircleroundit · 06/08/2022 07:03

111 are perfect for this sort of thing. Call them! 🗣

Heyisforhorses · 06/08/2022 07:06

I had the crackle a couple of years ago, I went to out of office doctor who told me to go straight to a&e (I'm in Ireland). Ring 111 and let them listen to the crackle and decide what you should do. Mine turned out to be fluid on lungs, I was treated and all was grand but do ring and let them hear the noise.

dunnowhattodo12 · 06/08/2022 07:28

I rang 111 and they told me someone would call back but they're busy so could be a while but someone called me back within 5 minutes and they've told me to go to A&E within the hour so i'm on the way there now. I've coughed up more blood since then and been getting minor chest pain. Thanks everyone for your replies!

Take a bag to a and e with clothes, toothbrush, deoderant, baby wipes, change of clothes, books, phone charger etc etc.

You could be in for quite a wait.

lunar1 · 06/08/2022 07:51

I was just going to say they would send you straight to A&E for coughing up blood with no know cause.

I hope everything is okay.

Afterfire · 06/08/2022 08:05

Sorry to hear you’re unwell. I hope you get seen quickly.

Rainallnight · 06/08/2022 08:08

Interesting. I was going to say definitely GP

RonObvious · 06/08/2022 08:11

I had something similar happen after Covid, although it was a lot of blood. Absolutely out of nowhere. Have had a chest X-ray, ct scan, and still none the wiser. They did see inflammation, so gave me a round of antibiotics, and I’m waiting for a final X-ray to double check that everything looks good. No blood since, and am feeling better, so fingers crossed it was just a random infection thing. Hope all goes well and you get some answers!

Darkness22 · 06/08/2022 08:12

Good luck, op. Thinking of you.

Crimsonripple · 06/08/2022 08:18

Go to A&E. 111 are utterly useless and will just delay time where you could be waiting (I know boring) and already in the system.

Grintyphop · 06/08/2022 08:24

111 have had a cyber attack which could account for slowness, hope you get it sorted and feel better soon OP

Darkness22 · 06/08/2022 17:20

How are you getting on?

Mortonpup · 06/08/2022 17:22

How are you getting on? Flowers

Quartz2208 · 06/08/2022 17:22

GOod luck - DH had a random (cause unknown) of throwing up blood (for around 3 hours) that he was in hospital for for 3 nights so be prepared.

AhaLyn · 06/08/2022 17:37

Hope all ok, post back here if you feel alone during the wait Brew

Ohtoberoavingagain · 06/08/2022 17:41

A&E now. Could you be pregnant? Friend had this with ectopic pregnancy —- said she knew it was serious when she tasted blood ( she was a nurse too) and still her husband thought she was making a fuss….

BoffinMum · 06/08/2022 17:45

I got this with walking pneumonia. OP certainly needs a chest X-ray so I hope she’s getting one.

dunnowhattodo12 · 06/08/2022 19:23

Sorry I didn't update earlier I didn't know if anyone would be too interested. So i went to A&E and as soon as i entered they handed me a slip of paper with an out of hours GP appointment link and he said i can stay if i want but they were really busy, long waits and taking priorities in (this was when I entered the hospital so i wasn't seen by anyone but told him the situation) and he made me feel like I shouldn't of been there so i took the slip and left. I couldn't get an out of hours appointment and so i went to a small walk in centre who told me i need to go back to A&E.. I ended up ringing 111 back and the girl was really lovely and put one of the nurses on the phone to me who explained why it could have happened and that it sounds more likely to be small burst blood vessel in my throat. I know i should get seen but i'm keeping an eye on everything and if anything changes/gets worse i will 100% go back to A&E and make sure i get seen. If not I'm going to ring my doctors on Monday anyway and get checked and see what they say. At the moment i feel okay just a bit of chest pain and no more blood since this morning!
