Lawn mowing at gone 9pm?

CovIneedanamechange · 03/08/2022 22:45

Neighbours who back on to us have been living elsewhere for the few months (whilst they have a massive extension built complete with 2nd floor huge windows which will mean they overlook all our living spaces at close range - but that’s another thread!). They turned up one evening last week and decided to do some lawn mowing and other garden maintenance starting at about 8.45pm and going on for an hour or so. Tonight they have turned up and fired up the petrol lawn mower at 9.05pm. I've two young children and with the heat all the windows are open. At about 9.20 I popped my head over the fence and enquired if they had much more to do. It wasn’t"t well received! WIBU?

Unless they’ve got a football pitch in their garden, mowing the lawn isn’t going to take that long.
It’s obviously the only time they have to do it.

Its a crazy thing to piss off new neighbours for at this stage.

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2022 22:50

We’ve had no rain and the grass isn’t growing. What the hell are they mowing? Our lawn’s yellow dust.

ReeseWitherfork · 03/08/2022 22:50

Not unreasonable at all. My DH sometimes lives in cloud cuckoo land and does random shit and random times before I point out to him the neighbours may not appreciate it. I think he can be a bit oblivious to how socially unacceptable some things are? No idea. Anyway, luckily I nip it in the bud quickly. But if one of the neighbours approached him then he’d definitely be mortified and apologetic. They’re clearly entitled fuckers.

You’d think but took them over an hour last week. If they just cracked on I wouldn’t mind so much but it’s stop start, stop start and it’s woken the kids up

Nah, petrol mowers are noisy fuckers. Running one past 9pm is a dick move.

Thank you! Pretty sure I'd be less bothered if it was a Flymo! 😁

I think it's unreasonable after 9pm. A petrol mower is very loud and smelly.

If it’s light enough to cut the lawn it’s fine.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/08/2022 23:41

Absolutely fine. 9 is not late.

CovIneedanamechange · 03/08/2022 23:55

So interesting to see the range of opinions! Never in a million years would I think to run noisy machinery after 9pm esp if I knew I had a mix of v elderly and v young neigbours.
Out of character for me to say something - I'm a conflict avoider as a rule!

Wow, I feel guilty mowing at 5pm. Noisy stuff should be finished by 7pm.

antwacky · 04/08/2022 00:14

I do think 9pm is a tad late for lawn mowing, I would always wonder if there were any little ones in bed nearby at that time. My neighbour lit her fire pit last night at 10pm, it was still very warm here so we had all windows and doors open. We are terraced houses with tiny gardens surrounded by fields, everything is tinder dry and we've had no rain for over a month 🙄

Hmmm that's what I was thinking?

Hold on, so not only are they literally the only people in the UK who actually have grass left to mow, but they've mowed it two weeks in a row? Hmm

StressfulBedtimes · 04/08/2022 00:22

It’s rained every day since last Friday where I am, jealous of everyone saying there’s been no rain!

In fact! I’ve lost track of all my days, it was the Friday before last!!
Every single day!

SD1978 · 04/08/2022 00:25

I'd say technically it would be ok up until whatever the noise limit time is, although I agree it's not particularly polite or neighbourly to be cranking it at 21.00. After 22.00 I'd be pretty miffed

avamiah · 04/08/2022 00:26

I know it’s the school holidays here in the Uk and it’s very warm but it is dark by 9pm and let’s be honest , it is a bit strange to be mowing the lawn at that time wherever you live and especially if you have neighbours.

I often hoover and clean my house at night but that’s indoors not outdoors.

Shiningstarr · 04/08/2022 00:33

Our next door neighbour did this a couple of weeks ago. At 21:30 he started up his petrol lawn mower and cut his front grass, I said to my husband if he does the back garden after the front I'm going to be very surprised.

At 21:50 he then started cutting the back!! Very noisy and inconsiderate. I went out and asked him if he was going to be much longer, as my daughter was wanting to get to sleep!! I said 10pm was a strange time to be cutting the grass. Absolute bell end.

Meatshake · 04/08/2022 00:58

Total dick move, particularly with a petrol mower. I feel guilty using ours during the day it's so bloody loud!

MiniPumpkin · 04/08/2022 01:24

Not unreasonable. My neighbour accross the street has recently taken to using an electric saw to cut wood until 11pm in his garage with the door open. If I’m lucky it will be a good night where he spends the night banging weights and gym balls on the floor. The echo is so loud from either activity I have murderous fantasies 😂

I pay a small fortune to a management company (apartment) that overspent by £450 PER apartment last year
They've been twice in the last 3 weeks to mow my lawn. No bloody wonder they've overspent, I sent them away and said "can we give it chance, given it's dead, it isn't growing!" Hmm
I swear their idea of garden maintenance is just razoring everything back until it wilts in defeat

bellabasset · 04/08/2022 14:25

I do but then my ndn's take their music put in the garden so I can't sit out in peace and quiet

We don't all have the same weather. I cut my grass on Sunday and its already needing cut again after all the rain this week. My lawn is a deep emerald green.
