Lawn mowing at gone 9pm?

Neighbours who back on to us have been living elsewhere for the few months (whilst they have a massive extension built complete with 2nd floor huge windows which will mean they overlook all our living spaces at close range - but that’s another thread!). They turned up one evening last week and decided to do some lawn mowing and other garden maintenance starting at about 8.45pm and going on for an hour or so. Tonight they have turned up and fired up the petrol lawn mower at 9.05pm. I've two young children and with the heat all the windows are open. At about 9.20 I popped my head over the fence and enquired if they had much more to do. It wasn’t"t well received! WIBU?

9pm is a very anti-social time to cut grass

10HailMarys · 04/08/2022 14:48

I don't have kids myself but I personally wouldn't cut the grass at 9pm - my next door neighbours have kids and I don't feel like it would be very considerate of me if I cranked up the lawnmower, or any other power tool, at that time. The latest I'd mow the lawn would be about 7pm and mine doesn't usually take that long to cut unless it's damp or I've left it for far too long.

If it's anything outside of 10-8.30 am I'm generally ok with it but I see your point if you have young kids

We’ve had no rain and the grass isn’t growing. What the hell are they mowing? Our lawn’s yellow dust.

This was my first reaction too! But I know some areas of the UK have seen some rain (we've barely had any since the end of June).

So, 34 degrees having BBQ in garden . All the neighbours have there windows and doors open 21.15 pm . Someone starts up their petrol strimmer . Queried who it was on WhatsApp. Got a reply. I said I thought it was socially unacceptable and people need to have a greater awareness If how their actions affect neighbours. Got totally slated like I was the guilty party . WTF.

Lampshadeblue · 25/07/2024 08:21

I’d say it’s unacceptable after 10pm.

Meadowfinch · 25/07/2024 08:23

Ha ha ha. I live in a rural community and our farmer was hay-making at 2.15am last Sunday. Massey Ferguson, Head lights, hay baler. That's fairly normal. 😀

Maybe your neighbours come from a farming community where such things are accepted. Personally I'd try to be done by 9pm, but if I ran over by 15 mins, that wouldn't worry me to get it finished.

But if it's still light and all the neighbours are outside partying, why not? They aren't making any more noise than you are, surely?

You’d think but took them over an hour last week. If they just cracked on I wouldn’t mind so much but it’s stop start, stop start and it’s woken the kids up

Hold on, so not only are they literally the only people in the UK who actually have grass left to mow, but they've mowed it two weeks in a row? Hmm

Our grass is growing like crazy and we've had rain most days this last fortnight, along with hot and humid weather. Cotswolds.

OP - for me it's one of those things that if it's a one off I wouldn't comment or have an issue. We all occasionally have to do stuff at awkward times or realise we need something different by tomorrow (maybe they're having photos taken of the extension, etc etc who knows. Or maybe they're just rude!) But if it was becoming regular, so they cut their lawn everything Thursday 9.30pm then I'd probably say something.

Gosh, You're having a different summer to us. It's rained every day for weeks. I cut the lawn on Saturday and it's already ankle deep.
