MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:03

I have just come downstairs to notice a few maggots in my kitchen.

I disposed of them and left the room for a few minutes and when I came back there was another one.

I can't see anymore but keep going back to check.

What can I do if there are more ?!

This is gross sorry guys but I was coming down for lunch and now I'm completely put off.

I've emptied the kitchen bin and put the bin outside. There is no food out

It's just a matter of cleaning and re leaning. The problem is that a fly has laid eggs and they are now hatching, they may keep hatching for a few days as you may miss the odd egg.

You've taken the bin out and cleaned it. Give the whole area a good clean with bleach, make sure you bleach and wash the bin and repeat for the next 3 days.

MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:09

I can't see any eggs though are they so small I wouldn't see them?
Just noticed a couple more.

Feel like I just need to stand guard in my kitchen now so I can dispose of them as they appear.

I'm scared I'm going to leave the room and go back with maggots crawling everywhere

dementedpixie · 02/08/2022 13:11

Are they in the same place each time?

MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:12

The first few were scatter but I just went out and there were three by the rug.

I may have to lift the rug but I'm scared of what I'll find

OP posts:
MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:13

I've hoovered the rug and going to do that again then empty the hoover.

I understand.
A couple of years ago we had a kitchen fitted. A bird fell down some sort of pipe and presumably died. (We we’re away)
when we got back our lovely new kitchen was absolutely full of bluebottles. We sprayed the kitchen with raid and then swept the dozy ones off windows.
in the end we had to buy a blue light machine like they uses in cafes.

Watermelonsugarhighlove · 02/08/2022 13:17

Sorry OP I feel your pain ,I had them in my bin last year and that was bad enough 😬

Thatswhyimacat · 02/08/2022 13:19

Was there any meat in the bin?

The buggers move quickly once they get out but it would be pretty obvious if there was one massive lot somewhere. Just spray lots around the bin.

MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:26

The bin is now outside but I've spotted a few more since.

Still not sure where they're coming from.

This is horrible

OP posts:
MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:27

Under the fridge maybe?

OP posts:
Laiste · 02/08/2022 13:30

I've seen a fly lay it's eggs in a grim but quite small puddle of spilled meat juices.

In the heat they will lay in the smallest of messes!

Anything manky stuck on/up under your skirting boards where you can't see easily?

Do you have pets?

Laiste · 02/08/2022 13:31

Yes under the fridge or between any gaps in the worktops ....

Sweatinglikeabitch · 02/08/2022 13:31

Can you just stand in the kitchen and watch where they're coming from?

We had them crawling out our bin once. Absolutely horrifying. Even once we'd taken the bin out we kept finding the stragglers.

Under the fridge is a good place. Or behind it. Behind anything that some food could have fallen behind. Are the surfaces clear?

Fuwari · 02/08/2022 13:32

Are you 100% sure they're maggots? I had a larder moth infestation a few years ago and the "babies" looked just like maggots. I hope for your sake it's not, as it took forever to get rid of them! But check things like flour packets etc, see if there is any sort of webbing type stuff in there.

Goldieshock · 02/08/2022 13:33

Our kids scrape their plates messily into the compost bin
Some meat had dropped and rolled on the floor
Cue white maggots appearing all over the floor for about 3 days until I found it
It's gross but also nature- just keep cleaning up and bleach spray under fridge etc

Brigante9 · 02/08/2022 13:34

Are your units free standing? Is there a space under the cooler where a piece of food may have fallen/been kicked? I find them in the compost bin.

Laiste · 02/08/2022 13:34

I've not had the pleasure of maggots in my kitchen myself, but one year our wheelie bin had an infestation.

Oh.my.god

And there were so many of them! I'm wondering if you've already got rid of the cause (bin) and these are just ones which have fallen out of the bin and been walk about?

givemushypeasachance · 02/08/2022 13:38

What do you do with your food waste?

It's fine though, it's a bit gross but it's not the end of the world. This time of year, if there is meat or something left accessible (and flies can squeeze in tiny places!) then they will lay eggs, smaller than grains of rice, on it. And those eggs will grow and hatch into maggots. Those maggots will become flies. Circle of life! Maggots won't hurt you, but we have a genetic and cultural disgust for them to help avoid contaminated food.

It's very common for outside food waste bins or general bins to get maggots in during the summer. If you find the source, you can kill them with a kettle of boiling water.

MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:42

I've just sprayed all my sides and the entire floor and down by the bin and fridge with kitchen cleaner.

OP posts:
MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:43

Yes the children scrape their own plates into the bin so easily have bits around that could make way under bin

You definitely have to move the rug!

MaggotHELL · 02/08/2022 13:50

I will move the rug- will have to be after my meeting now though. Sad face

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 02/08/2022 13:50

Better than the flies. Look for them and deal with them while still maggots rather than flies.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 02/08/2022 13:51

They will head for dark places, so you have to check under the rug.
