When Mumsnet has Gremlins

Well I checked Twitter and FB for an update there was nothing. AIBU to ask MN to say sorry we're down at the moment but we're doing our best. That would save all the resets, clearing cache . Then just let us know on FB Twitter that things are fixed. Servers do go kaput, weather being one problem

PrinceOfPegging · 31/07/2022 12:49

So rather than fixing the problems, you’d have them telling you about the problems instead?

sashagabadon · 31/07/2022 12:50

It’s a chat website not an emergency service. Get on with Sunday morning and then check back in an hour

gamesconsoler · 31/07/2022 12:51

I agree, OP.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2022 12:51

It would be be good customer service to do so.

Teadrinkingmumofone · 31/07/2022 12:57

Does it really make that much difference to your day?!

justasking111 · 31/07/2022 13:18

Well not my day but I remember doing cartwheels when breakfast TV started, Selina Scott, then ITV as a young mum walking around or feeding, consoling. There's also our friends overseas who are in different time zones. I don't need to know the particular problem it would go over my head anyway. At work we get lovely IT folks fixing our Gremlins. Gawd knows what they are I never ask.

To be fair I don't know if FB, Twitter goes down for them at the same time.

OP posts:
SavoirFlair · 31/07/2022 13:20

You seriously clear the cache for an outage that would in modern terms be 1/2 hour to an hour max?

walk away from the phone… find something else. YABU

That was Mumsnet advice not mine

Some folks would love to walk away but can't. I've had two operations one in March one four weeks ago,. We're not all able to go anywhere while we heal

Paslaptis · 31/07/2022 13:33

I was seeing a message earlier today that said there was a server issue and it was being worked on. Something about coffee if I remember right. It wasn't just a generic 404/broken link message. It would be ideal to have some way of knowing when it is back up, but it seems like checking back on MN would be just as easy as going to, say, Twitter to check.

You can't find anything else to do on the Internet?

So who do you think the advertising on here is aimed at?

Unless you pay for Mumsnet Premium, you're not a customer. The advertisers are the customers.

I agree. It would be nice to know what the problem is but good time to do the
housework or read a book. MN isn't the only possible way to pass time. Grin

I like mumsnet but I find it strange people are so invested. It’s like when posters complain and think it’s rude when an OP doesn’t update their thread just because they’ve replied to it. It’s a forum. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sparklingbrook · 31/07/2022 14:11

I got told on a thread many years ago that MN is an emergency service for a lot of people who have literally nobody. So I don't know how that worked in the summer of 2015 when MN got hacked and it was offline for days.

Lives have been saved according to some posters. In the wee small hours folks have been advised to go to hospital. They have reported back with near misses health wise.

OP posts:
WhenISnappedAndFarted · 31/07/2022 14:18

It said it was a server issue, clearing cache isn't going to fix that.

Just give it an hour and see if it's back.

Which is great, but dangerous to always rely on what is basically a Chat website for medical advice from random strangers.

Why do you think advertisers use MN? High user traffic. Your eyeballs and mine. We are the product, the least MNHQ could do is to keep users updated. It doesn’t feel like a huge amount to ask.

SquirrelFan · 31/07/2022 14:26

I agree, it would certainly be nice and probably very easy for them to do. I've been in bed with a dodgy stomach and it was kind of frustrating. Of course it's not essential, but seems like an easy win for them.

FourChimneys · 31/07/2022 14:28

While I appreciate that for some people MN is a vital resource, I'm sure that for most people it's a frivolous diversion, like picking up a trashy magazine at the hairdressers.

MN was off earlier, is back now, and in between I've baked a cake, done some gardening, chatted to a neighbour, played my cello and Facetimed DS.

I obviously have some sort of glitch on my phone though. I never see adverts, just a grey panel saying "advertisement". Quite pleased about that really!

They need to use the correct resources for the situation they’re in. Mumsnet isn’t it.
