AIBU to think that Giles Coren deserved to lose his job on the BBC’s Amazing Hotels?

I started an AIBU thread a few weeks ago as I was furious that Giles Coren had used the phrase “fuzzy-wuzzies” in one of his Times articles.

There is a big story about him losing his job on Amazing Hotels as a consequence of mocking and celebrating Dawn Foster’s death. In my mind it has not come a moment too soon and the fact the BBC took a whole year to give him the boot is pathetic.

I'm v glad (and surprised!) he's been sacked.
Those tweets were vile - really showed him to be a stuck up pathetic little boy. And all because she made a comment on the nepotism that'd got him where he was!!
The fact that he couldn't see what a bad look this was speaks volumes about the depth of his privilege and insulation from reality.
But just glad he chose to make himself look bad publicly so he could suffer the repercussions.

This is good news. I only watched about two of those early on, because I couldn't stand him. He was at a hotel working with the car parking guys and was driving the massively expensive car in the garage so fast, the employee was being him to show down. I thought he was such an arse then, as had anything happened that employee would probably have lost their job. He was just treating it like a big laugh - "Look at me, I get paid to stay in fancy hotels and hang out with the plebs. I can do what I want." It totally put me off the whole series, which was a shame as Monica Galetti was genuinely interesting and watchable.

begging him to slow down

That's not how it reads to me. It reads like he has left because of other time commitments. The BBC quote is that they are sorry to see him go.

What has gone on behind the scenes may well be another matter though.

unitedcolorsofbattersea · 30/07/2022 07:08

The article in the Daily Mail certainly seems to imply that he was sacked by the BBC. It also seems telling that GC made no comment about the story. Surely he would have said, “The BBC offered to renew my contract, but I couldn’t continue to present Amazing Hotels because I’m presenting X [insert name of TV show]”.

While the journalist that wrote it certainly implies it, the facts that they present, don't.

But as I said, what went on behind the scenes could well be different.

He announced he would be moving on from the broadcaster due to a 'diary clash', and praised the BBC for the 'beautiful' way it has handled his move

The BBC said in a statement: 'We’re sorry to see Giles go and would like to thank him for his contribution over four successful series.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 30/07/2022 07:55

This is the third post you've made about him in less than a month. How obsessed are you??

Agree - it says in the article that he himself said he was quitting the hotels program to make a different show. And if you were going to sack him for the Dawn Foster tweets why would you do it a year after the fact? It was big enough news and had enough calls for him to be sacked at the time.

I also think Giles Coren is a talentless twat who has everything he has purely on nepotism (I guess if he sees this post he'll hope for my death, too) but I think the Mail is putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 here, and while I would quite like him to be sacked I don't think he has been.

whensmynexthol1day · 30/07/2022 08:22

I wonder how him and his sister get on in real life? I really hope her and David relentlessly mock him at Family gatherings. I'd be sad if she thought he was ok

unitedcolorsofbattersea · 30/07/2022 08:37

The article is very carefully worded to not actually say that he was sacked, but to imply that though.

Yes. And journalists are known for never embellishing the truth to create a story where there is none...

PurpleWisteria · 30/07/2022 09:00

Dreadful little man. Ego the size of a planet. Poor Victoria being related to such a nasty little cunt.

mycatisannoying · 30/07/2022 09:02

I must be the only twat who read this thinking 'but Giles (Brandreth) comes across pretty well on Gogglebox'.
Blush

unitedcolorsofbattersea · 30/07/2022 14:41

Giles Brandreth is lovely though. He would never do something like this.

#gilescoren is trending on Twitter.

Ontomatopea · 30/07/2022 15:10

I think he is a bad fit for the BBC so not surprised

KentishTowner · 30/07/2022 15:22

Yes. It makes the BBC look like a dinosaur if they continue to employ Giles Coren. He is the opposite of woke. I wonder if this new opportunity he says he is pursuing might fail to materialise. Unless it is on GB News that is.

SevenSixForty · 31/07/2022 13:53

It’s because he issued two tweets mocking the death of a woman with long term health problems.

Just Google it, he’s a narcissistic scumbag.

No-one ‘trolled him on twitter’, they made one comment querying his family connection.

VladmirsPoutine · 31/07/2022 13:59

Giles Coren exemplifies privilege in all its forms. Watching his trajectory has been remarkable. Imagine getting to live life essentially using a cheat code. Not a shred of talent, or hard work. Pure and simple privilege.
IIRC didn't he also write something very wayward about going on holiday with his then toddler daughter.

DorritLittle · 31/07/2022 14:00

I don't really have an opinion as I don't know the facts (because I don't consider a DM article facts) but you do post about Giles Coren a lot OP.

I was just going to say this, I cant imagine she thinks he is appropriate although obviously she must love him, he's her brother but she might not like him.

drpet49 · 31/07/2022 14:02

OP is obsessed with him. How many threads do you want to start???

Suetwo · 31/07/2022 14:40

I can't stand him. I don't know how he became so famous. I remember an art show he presented, in which contestants had to spot the fake in various art galleries across the UK. His female co-presenter was an art historian, and the contestants were all serious and interested. But he was SUCH an obnoxius little prik and completely ruined it. He clearly had zero interest in art. And he kept making idiotic jokes at inappropriate moments. He also talked over the female art historian when she was trying to make an interesting observation (far more interesting than anything he had to say). Ugghh, the man has way *too much confidence. He's like some cocky, obnoxious 12-year-old trapped in a middle-aged man's body.

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 31/07/2022 16:35

I don't need to Google it @SevenSixForty . I know he's a complete twat. But it seems daft to give the BBC kudos for sacking him, when it doesn't sound like they have, and in fact have said they are sorry to see him go.
