CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

These are brilliant!

GrowlingManchego · 25/07/2022 23:07

Good grief, total CFs!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/07/2022 23:08

All of these are unbelievably, unmitigatedly CF. Well done for keeping all these amazing examples to tell us all in one go!

i don’t have any such brilliant ones. My nearest is last summer on holiday in Wales - lots of English tourists refusing to put masks on and arguing they shouldn’t have to because “it’s not the law in England”. You’re not in England, mate!

Eunorition · 25/07/2022 23:08

Be kind! What a tosser.

I saw a woman kick off at airport security because they obviously wouldn't allow her to take on the bottle of Cherry Coke her toddler was slurping on.

"Well, I didn't think the rules applied to children," she yelled. "Can't she just keep it?" Told no. She carries on with "So what you're saying is that now YOU choose what MY child drinks, is that it?" Like, you're giving a toddler Cherry Coke, frankly I reckon the security team would do a better job.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/07/2022 23:09

I think my favourite bit is the breakfast CFs - they shouldn’t let people sit in the window and eat if outside customers can’t come in to eat yet 🤣🤣

MrsAvocet · 25/07/2022 23:14

I live in a popular holiday area and I would say that things have calmed down a lot here now. It is still busier than pre Covid ( and it was always busy anyway) but not the madness that we experienced earlier in the pandemic when you couldn't move for people, many of whom seemed to have completely taken leave of their senses. We had visitors shitting in the streets, parking wherever they liked and strolling down the middle of twisty A roads like they were walking along Blackpool promenade.
Now it's all more or less back to normal, just with more people. There were always some CFers and because the overall numbers are up there are more of them, but the proportion is probably much the same, and most tourists are just regular normal people who want to enjoy their holidays.
The only issue I can see now is the staffing issues in the hospitality industry. More or less every hotel, cafe, pub etc round us is currently advertising for staff which is leading to slow service and reduced menus in a lot of places. I have heard a few people getting a bit shirty, especially last week when it was really hot, but most people understand, or at worst grumble a bit amongst themselves. But overall things feel more like normal to me than they have done since before the pandemic started.

Bubblebubblebah · 25/07/2022 23:21

I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Since I left hospitality, I drink about quarter of what I used to... Yeah...

WeWillLookBack · 25/07/2022 23:24

I was chatting to the owner - he feels CF is constant - and partly struggles with recruiting staff because they won't / can't deal with it.

I was in Padstow last year, and had lunch at one of the pubs in the town. Really nice young-ish woman serving. She said I was the first person to be nice to her all day. She said they had 3 people quit that week because of the way they were spoken too.

I’d be mortified if I ever behaved like this.

I used to wait tables when I was younger and grew some very thick skin with dealing with total shit for brains CFs.

When people are on holiday it’s as if their sense of entitlement goes through the roof.

DangerNoodles · 25/07/2022 23:34

I work in retail and I have noticed generally that people are getting more irate, not just in summer. I live near the sea in the North East which can be touristy but not on the same level as Cornwall and Devon. I think people have forgotten how to be polite during lockdown. The children who come into our shop however, have beautiful manners and put many adults to shame.

I was so taken aback I hit the wrong poll option by mistake!

Just hit the option you want, it will change your vote.

I had no idea you could do that, thanks!

Grendalsmum · 25/07/2022 23:51

Yes!

I work in a museum gift shop and some people are awful, they just go straight into a tantrum if they can't get exactly what they want - it never used to be this bad. I feel really bad for the staff in the cafe next door and the peeps on admissions as they get it fifty times as bad as l do!

beansandmayo · 25/07/2022 23:53

I used to live near a small village on the nc500. The amount of disgusting trash, whole chemical toilets sometimes dumped, or the contents of the toilet or just plain shitting on the path. Keep your rubbish and your bowels until you find a suitable place to bin it fuckers. Parking the huge caravans in totally unsuitable places.

DFOD · 25/07/2022 23:57

I was in an M&S petrol station the other day and a recorded message came on the tannoy stating that they understand that everyone was under pressure but that their staff should not be abused. I expect people
are shocked by price hikes?

Bubblebubblebah · 25/07/2022 23:58

I think lots of these people used to go abroad and be twats to staff there (you know them dummy spanish speaking staff in Spain where there is just too many Spanish so 1*). Now they couldn't they need to show off their low iq here.

I feel your pain.
Slightly off the road from nc 500 but still the same problems.
Why people who can afford to hire a caravan begrudge £5 to get their waste disposed of correctly is beyond me. There should be hefty fines for fuckers like that.
Defecating on beaches, cutting trees for bonfire, parking on cemeteries… and mountains of rubbish left everywhere.
I despise some people.

Yes exactly! Felt like a broken record as I was always having this convo with people! But seriously you're spending a heap renting it, but won't pay the tiny fee to park it in a caravan park and get rid of your waste, rage! Its a huge part of why we moved

RedDiamond · 26/07/2022 00:07

Wow! To reading some persons are defecating in the street! Beyond comprehension. There is so much entitlement it is beyond belief.

antelopevalley · 26/07/2022 01:21

Places struggle to recruit staff because so many of these places have been turned into holiday villages where very few people live, and most of those who do earn too much to consider these jobs. Most people commute in for tourist jobs. So of course recruiting staff is hard.

SeaToSki · 26/07/2022 01:31

Its not quite the point of this thread, but I have had to call several customer service lines recently and have had great people helping me (albeit after quite the wait to get through). I found it quite sad that when I was thanking them for their help, they seemed so surprised at the thanks and one man even thanked me for thanking him. I am guessing that people similar to the ‘I'm looking at the view man’ had been demanding and rude to them for too much of their shift.

Hunderland · 26/07/2022 01:32

Agree many people seem to go from 0-100 in no time at all.

If not in person, them in emails, phone calls, etc. It's like 'shout first listen later '!

antelopevalley · 26/07/2022 01:52

This is what working with the public is like. I think everyone should have enforced national service where you have to work in hospitality or public facing low paid role.

Madwife123 · 26/07/2022 02:47

Yes!

I recently went to Rhodes, amazing country! And while there heard an English couple absolutely berate a poor waitress for not knowing who Shakespeare was, I was so horrified I ended up going over and saying something.
