to say 'wear the bikini'

Workyticket · 24/07/2022 09:32

I'm currently on holiday. I chewed myself silly over what to wear before coming away and skulked down to the pool in a big bather on the first day

I'm a short arsed 16, so probably look bigger than a tall 16

There are gorgeous women of every shape and size strutting their curves in teeny bikinis and, regardless of size, their confidence makes them look amazing!

I'm now in a bikini!

Anyone packing and worrying - please don't, nobody bats an eyelid! 🌞

I agree. Something about a full on bathing suit on holiday always feels wrong and yep you’ll see all sorts of body shapes in a bikini on holiday.

I have a horrible varicose vein that I wouldn’t dream of showing by wearing shorts at home but on holiday I never care when I’m by the pool. Life’s short so enjoy yourself in your bikini on holiday!

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 24/07/2022 09:40

No one knows you. You'll never see them again. You probably stand out less than if you were wearing a one piece, but no one is looking at you anyway. And DH and the kids will still love you.

SwedishEdith · 24/07/2022 09:45

I agree with wear what you want but people are looking at you. I never understand this "no-one is looking". They are because that's all there is to do on a beach / pool but they may not be judging you, that's the difference. The OP is looking at everyone 😀

Workyticket · 24/07/2022 09:48

@SwedishEdith you're probably right - i definitely mean 'nobody cares'

I'm having a day in the shade, reading my book and mumsnetting between blasts in the pool! 🤩

Totally agree-I wore one when I was an extremely large size 28-30, and will be wearing one now I’m a very wobbly loose skinned size 16! If anyone has an issue with it, it’s their issue not mine

gogohmm · 24/07/2022 09:51

I'm a 16 and wear a bikini - I would recommend getting a good one with lots of structure, mine was expensive, £50 for just the top (I have 3 pairs of bottoms all plain black they were cheaper)

Beetlewings · 24/07/2022 09:54

In the same way as you've been encouraged into a little body positivity by the sight of other women being unselfconscious in their swimwear, you've probably encouraged another woman or girl to sling on her bikini too!

EV117 · 24/07/2022 09:56

I don’t know where people have been holidaying that they feel they need to be self conscious I’m a bikini. Wherever I’ve been there are people of all ages, shapes and sizes in their swimwear just minding there own business and enjoying the sun. If there’s a place to not feel body conscience, it’s a beach on holiday.

If someone’s choice is to wear a one piece they shouldn’t be judged for that either.

Well said.

And well done on an amazing weight loss.

Divebar2021 · 24/07/2022 10:09

Can I just say I’m in a one piece and don’t particularly need to feel I’m out of step with the rest of the population. There was another thread where someone made the casual observation that people were more likely to stare at you for wearing a one piece because they were so unfashionable. I was a bit WTF. I’m on holiday now and there’s a mixture of both but interestingly no other plus size women ( I’m a U.K 18. ) but women should wear what makes them feel their best selves

midsomermurderess · 24/07/2022 10:11

When you go to the beach in Europe in the summer there are women of all ages and sizes wearing bikinis, enjoying themselves, looking totally at ease. It curious how in the UK we feel such shame about our bodies. So limiting and joyless.

Butterlover1 · 24/07/2022 10:13

One of life's eureka moments for me is realising that people don't really notice or care. I think it's a hangup from school days when admittedly classmates do care and tease but when we're all adults it changes and nobodys looking at the lumps, bumps or veins, not least because we've all probably got insecurities. It took me into my early 40s to realise and it's been very empowering!

CounsellorTroi · 24/07/2022 10:13

@Divebar2021 I agree . There are some fabulous one pieces and tankinis out there.

Maximoose · 24/07/2022 10:14

I wish I had this confidence :(

I haven’t taken my kids to the beach in years because I can’t bare the thought of shaking any of my skin and it’s too hot to wear clothes.

knightsinwhitesatin · 24/07/2022 10:14

Good for you, enjoy yourself OP!

nomistake · 24/07/2022 10:15

Yep. I went on holiday recently and didn't take any bikinis because I'm self conscious about my belly. Then I saw all kinds of shapes and sizes wearing them on the beach. So I immediately bought 2 for my next holiday!

I agree. I would never wear a bikini because I wouldn't feel comfortable. But a well structured one piece does wonders. I couldn't care less if every other woman is wearing a bikini, I have never felt the need. If people consider me odd then let them. I've even discovered <shock horror> swim leggings, they are marvellous!

awwbiscuits · 24/07/2022 10:19

I probably won't ever wear a bikini again :( I am just so grim

chosenone · 24/07/2022 10:27

Same here. Currently on holiday and put my bikini on fir the first time since pre covid and burst into tears. I'm a 16 but used to have a flatter tummy, the wobbly one on view isnt great but I'm not on Love Island. The ladies around me are every shape and size and all look great.

Wear your bikini and enjoy 🌞

I think it's more having not been on holiday for a while.

Planning and packing plus the first morning stripping off are always a little anxious as you've not been so exposed for a year (3 in our case)

Workyticket · 24/07/2022 10:31

Apologies @Divebar2021 I didn't mean to make anyone feel bad for wearing a 1 piece, I really hope I've not offended you 💐

BrownStripePJ · 24/07/2022 10:46

I've just got back from holiday. I had no idea one pieces were "not fashionable " but it does explain why 90%were wearing bikinis.

I was wearing a one suit. I'm a size 10 but with a big belly and love handles so definitely didn't feel confident in a bikini.

thebabessavedme · 24/07/2022 11:21

This is an interesting thread, I am nearly 60, pretty wobbly but still wear bikinis, tbf, ones with a fairly substantial knicker, the other week I met a beautiful, young brazillian girl who also happens to be a stylist for film and tv, the conversation got round to holidaying in Rio, I said 'ohhh no not for me, no wants to see me amoungst the beautiful people in my big ole cossie' her reply was that everyone, including women my age wears thong bikinis because they look more flattering than big costumes, I'm yet to be convinced and there is no way I'm spending 2 weeks pulling floss out of my bum cheeks but I do wonder if she has a point?

shootme69 · 24/07/2022 11:47

I'll be wearing a bikini this year at size 18. I'm so fed up with trying to have a pee in a one piece, you either have to strip or do a weird crouch as you pull the crotch to one side. I've had skin cancer in the past so will be wearing with a sleeved uv/rash vest so will be decently covered. As someone said the other day, it's none of my business what other people think of me.
