We’re looking at going away at half term but unsure where to go due to weather etc. my daughter will be in year one so have to go in the holidays, I can’t believe the prices, any recommendations?

I know this is not AIBU but I know this is the most used section.

I believe that the canary islands are good for autumn/winter breaks. I don’t know first-hand so I’m following with interest

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 20/07/2022 20:49

Depending on your school policy they may not fine for a week out of school. I went to Turkey at October half term but that was over 20 years ago!

TheFairyCaravan · 20/07/2022 20:49

The Canary Islands should be ok for an October Half Term holiday.

Ridesally · 20/07/2022 20:49

Thanks for the bump. It’s our first holiday since covid and we haven’t had the jabs so advice on that would also be helpful.

We went to Menorca in October half term a few years ago. It was warm enough during the day to go to the beach and do outdoor activities. Evenings were a bit cooler but still much warmer than the UK at that time of year.

Ridesally · 20/07/2022 20:50

I don’t want to take her out of school if I can help it.

Tenerife should be nice then.

Ridesally · 20/07/2022 20:51

Can anybody give advice re COVID? We haven’t had the jabs?

We are going to Turkey in October. No requirements for COVID jabs either.

NFLBingo · 20/07/2022 20:51

It depends what kind of thing you like, but we went away on a ‘mini-moon’ after we got married in October 2013 and Jersey was absolutely beautiful and really warm. Lots to do, lots of restaurants and if hiring a car you can see the whole island.

If Balearics have the same policy as mainland Spain this may be a no-no for OP as they currently still require a Covid vaccine passp and they haven't had the jabs.

Goodskin46 · 20/07/2022 20:53

We have enjoyed Barcelona and Naples at half term. Naples was particularly stunning.

InChocolateWeTrust · 20/07/2022 20:53

Why haven't you had the jabs? Confused

I'd say the advice on that front would be to get vaccinated. Asap. Hmm

Takingabreakagain · 20/07/2022 20:54

You'll need to check the travel advice on the gov.uk website for the covid requirements. Spain at the moment doesn't need vaccines but does need negative tests.
Maybe Italy or Greece would be better for you - they don't need jabs or tests. Of course by October it could all have changed yet again!

whiteroseredrose · 20/07/2022 20:54

We actually went to the Loire Valley in October one year. It was mild with lots of fairytale castles. One had Sleeping Beauty in it.

Yes, realised this when OP posted again at the same time as I was writing my post. I've suggested checking on the government travel requirements

shinynewapple22 · 20/07/2022 21:01

Mainland Spain southern coast should still be nice and warm but not over hot in the evening . I think if you haven't had your vaccines you can do PCR - this may well have changed by October and I don't know rules for children .

We usually go to Tenerife October and February half term, stay in the south as the weather can be dramatically different in the north. One year we went and went to loro park decided to go home over the volcano and encountered cars covered in snow and people wearing fur coats and hats! We were stopped and sent back as there was 4ft of snow and the roads were closed! Weather is usually lovely, sunbathing weather but might need a cardigan for the nights. You’re best finding somewhere with a heated pool for that time of year as the water can be a bit chilly. Unvaccinated you’ll can use an antigen test but needs to be taken within the 24 hours if your departure from the U.K., you can order these online, do the test at home, upload the test image and you’re emailed your certificate. You may need to complete the Spanish locator form also.

The Greek island of Rhodes is possible option if you are looking for a beach?

Ridesally · 20/07/2022 21:12

@InChocolateWeTrust because it is my choice, not something I am getting into.

I'm off half term ( October ) to Tenerife as it won't be as hot then and maybe a bit quieter too?
I've been October holiday before and it was nice.

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2022 21:29

Malta’s lovely in October and doesn’t require proof of vaccination currently.

Fizbosshoes · 20/07/2022 21:31

We went to Tunisia for October half term once.the weather was lovely but not somewhere I'd particularly recommend.

Clevs · 20/07/2022 21:33

I went to Cale Verde mid-October one year. It was about 30 degrees but windy.

Booked · 20/07/2022 21:37

Nobody can advise on travel restrictions for October.

Canaries for the weather though if you want to risk it unvaccinated. Make sure you've a decent insurance policy though
