Having refuse collections weekly in the heat

girlfriend44 · 20/07/2022 13:22

Should we have our bins collected more often in the heat. Every 2 weeks is quite alot in the hot weather. Flies and smell etc?

What are you dropping to allow the staff to double the amount of pick ups?

its not ideal but with double bagging if needed and keeping the bin clean it shouldn’t be a massive issue.

balalake · 20/07/2022 13:26

Ideal should be weekly everywhere. However when faced with cutbacks, something a council can do that is easy to implement.

tealandteal · 20/07/2022 13:27

Seems unlikely, we are about to move to every three weeks.

ShinyMe · 20/07/2022 13:28

Would you prefer to pay for this by increased council tax, or by cutting a different service?

I agree. I used to live in a hot European city and they collected the rubbish every single day (but in the evening so it was cooler for the workers). They also cleaned the street every night. There was no council tax where I lived and it was a poorer country so I don't buy into the argument that the UK can't afford it or that council tax would have to increase. It would also create more jobs for people.

girlmom21 · 20/07/2022 14:00

If they're bagged you won't really have an issue and it's only been excessively hot for two days.

If you really can't cope you could go to the tip yourself.

Where they individual bins or communal ones?

Stellaris22 · 20/07/2022 14:05

I would seriously look at how much you’re recycling and sending to landfill if you can’t cope. Ever since we started taking plastic wrap etc to the supermarket for recycling our waste bin barely gets used. Are you putting food waste in your food bin? Ours gets collected weekly.

We have an extra big bin and this is full by the end of 2 weeks. We also fill our big recycling bin. We don't have food bins here.

Silverswirl · 20/07/2022 14:15

The food bin gets super smelly and flies everywhere and that’s just in 1 week. It’s gross

comealongponds · 20/07/2022 14:16

YABU

its just not practical to temporarily increase to weekly collections got something that’s not predicted far enough in advance (like Christmas collections change and can be planned far in advance)

Polkadotties · 20/07/2022 14:17

Our plastics and food bin weren’t collected yesterday due to the heat. Our plastic won’t be picked up now for another 2 weeks and our food bin for another week.

Stranger1things · 20/07/2022 14:21

@Sirzy As it was a city everyone lived in apartment blocks. Each individual flat placed their rubbish bag outside their door at around 8pm and a porter for the building collected everyone's and put it in a communal bin which was then placed outside the building to be collected at night. It was great! However, this was 5 years ago and there wasn't much recycling compared to here so there was a lot of rubbish to be collected. It might have changed now.

Soubriquet · 20/07/2022 14:22

We already have it once a week

They started at 5am to compensate for the heat

WalkingOnSonshine · 20/07/2022 14:24

We are three weekly here which works for us.

I lived abroad & would put my rubbish onto the street corner every night - there was no recycling whatsoever, so I’m happy to forgo that if it means things actually get recycled!

Itsbackagain · 20/07/2022 14:24

We have landfill collections every 3 weeks, recycling every 2 weeks and food every week. I don't recycle food because i hate doing it so it's all in my landfill bin..I wash and bleach bins after emptying so they don't smell and not a lot of flies to require a weekly collection.

gamerchick · 20/07/2022 14:25

I don't think I'd welcome more work for the bin collectors in their unsuitable for mega hot weather uniform. Ours is late being picked up this week due to the weather, the council is looking out for the staff being outside in it.

People don't seem to give a toss about the people collecting it it seems

Lds1 · 20/07/2022 14:33

Out rubbish bin is done weekly but it's a smaller bin than I used to have when it was collected every two weeks.

We've just moved from a weekly area to a bi-weekly area and have smaller bins now 😬

Swizandswap · 20/07/2022 14:36

Ours cannot manage to get once every 2 weeks as it is, we are constantly complaining to council through missed collections. 😕

110APiccadilly · 20/07/2022 14:37

Round our way, nappies are only collected every two weeks. This also applies to adult incontinence pads etc, which strikes me as pretty unsanitary.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2022 14:38

Should be once a week, every two is disgusting and I just end up double wrapping everything.

SilverDragonfly1 · 20/07/2022 14:40

Our bin men are on strike, like last year. A new company took over the old company and is now trying to negate the gains from the last strike. Plus ca change.
