TAKE YOUR SMALL ANIMALS INSIDE

Friend’s neighbour’s rabbit just cooked to death in its hutch. Take them inside or find another way of cooling them - I don’t care how much they smell.

Poor thing that's awful 😩 our rabbits and dog have been barricaded onto the north facing part of the decking for the last 3 days (so on total shade) and have been fine.

blebbleb · 19/07/2022 15:31

That's awful! Do people keep cats in too? Mine seems happy to relax in the shade in our garden and comes inside when she feels like it

MrsIronfoundersson · 19/07/2022 15:32

Ferrets have moved into our living room instead of their custom built shed! They do not like heat at all.
Poor rabbit.

TuftyMarmoset · 19/07/2022 15:34

That’s awful 😞
You can also give them cold towels or frozen water bottles to lie on, or a cooling mat.

Snowflakes1122 · 19/07/2022 15:34

Horrific 😔

Better still, just don’t own a pet if you are going to neglect it. Some people are just not fit to have them

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/07/2022 15:36

Our cats are pretty much pleasing themselves (what's new eh? ) and can go in/out . They have fresh cold water , just larding and blaming us that they wear dense real fur !

This. Such basic care should come without any requests.

Two lovely house panthers. I love black cats.

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 19/07/2022 15:39

That's awful.
If you can't bring them in, a wet towel for them to lie on is a huge help and full shade.

Swizandswap · 19/07/2022 15:40

Disgusting rabbits should not be in a hutch in the first place!

I've two rabbits, that are free roam garden and can come in the house.

One is currently sleeping under the water butt and the other in her hutch.

Hourly I've gone and wetted their ears (fyi this is where they lose their heat from)
I've replaced their multiple water bowls every time too.

Chilled their veg.

Left the door open for them to go in the house but they don't want to.

I'm worried sick about them.

Your neighbour is an idiot.

Thursday37 · 19/07/2022 15:43

I keep checking on my hens but they seem alright and they don’t want to be in. They have free run of the gardens though and have a lot of options for shade and they have extra water out. I’m not convinced they would do well if this went on for much longer though as they are pretty ancient. For now they are panting but still laying!
That poor rabbit, that’s terrible.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/07/2022 15:50

That’s just awful.

My Guinea pigs are in the front room with me. We’ve got the fan on. They’ve got a cooling mat, frozen bottles of water, water bowls, plenty of watermelon and cucumber.

Our garden is in the sun all day, they’d have fried out there.

Nichelette · 19/07/2022 15:51

As soon as I saw how hot it would get I knew this would happen. It's no better than locking a dog in a hot car. Makes me so sad. I only have one 10 year old bunny left but she's happily living out her days inside with me anyway thankfully.

WulyJmpr · 19/07/2022 15:51

Same with keeping pets away from windows

DimplesToadfoot · 19/07/2022 15:53

Just went out and checked on mine as I have done multiple times, they have over 100square foot of runs, shelter shade, solar powered fans, frozen water bottles and a wind that was strong enough to blow my hat off, or I could bring them inside and put them into one of those 120cm x 60cm indoor rabbit cage ...I think I'll leave them where they are :-)

bloodywhitecat · 19/07/2022 15:54

My hens have a huge area to dust bathe in and plenty of shade under the hedges and trees in their garden. I don't think small animals necessarily need to be inside the house but they do need adequate shade, cool areas and plenty of water. No animal should be shut in a hutch in this weather.

BroomHandledMouser · 19/07/2022 15:54

The hens are under the bushes in the shade with plenty of water.

I don’t own animals that have to be caged, it’s not something I’m personally happy with.

YnysMonCrone · 19/07/2022 16:01

We have rats that are indoors anyway, but we have frozen water bottles and placed them on each level of the cage. It is bringing the general cage temp down. One bottle is in the lower level of their double deck hammock and has turned the upper deck into a cool pad which is proving popular.

Cats will find a shady spot outside and will be absolutely fine.

Quartz2208 · 19/07/2022 16:17

My two are in the lounge with me and are feeling the heat inside. Currently laying on the ceramic tiles of the fireplace and have fans on. They are still grumpy with it

Glittertwins · 19/07/2022 16:18

Our cat is currently indoors sprawled out as I felt it was just too hot outside, even in the shade and 2 water bowls. I'll open up the door and windows when it's a little less hot

hangrylady · 19/07/2022 16:20

Out guinea pigs are inside, in their indoor run. They can go back to the outdoor run tomorrow. I have a friend whose rabbit died due to heat a couple of summers ago. Nice people just clueless about caring for animals sadly.

gogohmm · 19/07/2022 16:21

Cat has a cat flap. It spent the morning sunbathing. It's raining now

Favouritefruits · 19/07/2022 16:26

Saw a bearded dragon on basking on a picnic blanket yesterday in the park, perfect weather for some animals!
