TAKE YOUR SMALL ANIMALS INSIDE

Friend’s neighbour’s rabbit just cooked to death in its hutch. Take them inside or find another way of cooling them - I don’t care how much they smell.

I agree. It really stresses me out when I think about it.

Animals shouldn't be caged. Really think we need to be thinking about how ethical pet ownership really is.

My rabbit has dug himself a little burrow in the bushes, boy cat is nowhere to be seen, girls cat is complaining loudly to everyone that she's hot and clomping from wood floor to tile every few minutes.

My chickens are out and have shady places they can go but the black one was sitting panting so I've sat her on an ice pack. Have misted them with cold water several times too. They're not used to this!

one of our cats has been in the Conservatory all day (the doors are open and by 10am the sun has moved off it) BUT I have gone out and bought her in 3 times to lie on her cool mat. Nope, keeps going back. She has a bowl of iced water out there and a fan.

One of our dogs had a cool, shady concrete outbuilding to lie in, lots of shade in another north facing spot and what has he done? Contorted himself to get as much of his body into direct sunlight as he possibly can and religiously moved with the sun to avoid the shade. He obviously didn’t get the memo!

My dogs do this every single time. If they were humans they'd be roasting themselves on the beach with their factor 2, daily. They then come inside, panting, and lie on me to cool down. I do not enjoy that part of the proceedings.

Horrific 😔

Better still, just don’t own a pet if you are going to neglect it. Some people are just not fit to have them

Not necessarily the case, I know someone who lost a rabbit today and they'd done all the correct things. They are susceptible to heatstroke.

I'd bring our cats in if I could find them! We barely see them in hot weather, they make "nests" in our (pretty overgrown) garden and I hope they find a cool space. We're leaving water out in the shade in the garden as they don't drink it indoors

DD and I had guinea-pigs (before the cats) and it was a lot of planning to keep them cool -though I never had to deal with 40c

hutches are insulated due to being made of treated wood . They are woefully small with no room for 3 hops or standing upright (for rabbits)
The were popular in the times that rabbits were meat animals , you could keep them secure and starve them for an empty digestive system.

Most prey animals don't want to lie out in the sun, they hide . They need hay 24/7 . I gave our guinea-pigs solid hay or stuffed into looroll tubes so they didn't burrow in it . They'd have newspaper and shredded paper or equine card bedding

Ours had an amazing PiggieShed with removal windows (re-inforced where the space was to protect them) and a fan. They had hutches onto the floor space (so hutches just for sleeping in)

Theres loads of info on dogs , its in the news every day at the moment . None I've seen on small pets

They hide being ill , they won't shout or make a fuss , they will likely go into protective shock and die

Its a horrible way for them to die
But while there are Petshops and Gumtree "Great pets for the kiddies or cannot give them the time looking for 5* home" people will buy them without much thought of the pitfalls

And if your pets are out emjoying some late night crepuscular activity - remember the foxes are out too .
