My friend has left her dog with me

I have another thread in the dog forum, however, I'm desperate for some advice.

My friend left her dog with me while she was away for a couple of weeks. She's now been away for almost 6 weeks and I haven't heard anything from her. I've sent her messages regarding a potential vet visit and nail clipping. She's read the messages and hasn't replied. I've called her but it just rings out.

We're not super close, more like neighbours than friends, however, she's looked after my cat before and I thought this would be fine. I don't know what to do? Does anyone have and advice?

OP posts:

This sounds like someone who's fallen off the wagon and is on some kind of binge. I've known people in the rehab community I worked in to go missing for weeks at a time then show up stones lighter, teeth gubbed, skin scabbing, saying that they had 'extended their holiday'.

But has she?

What if someone else has her device?

Oh for goodness sake

ReluctantCourier · 17/07/2022 13:23

Legally dogs are still chattel/property.

if someone leaves their property with you you are required to give them notice to collect it (21 days I think) as they’ve made you an involuntary bailee. After this date you can dispose of it. If you sell it you need to give them any profit less your costs. You can also keep it.

Asperia · 17/07/2022 13:38

She'll be back for it when she feels like it. She'll want the cash from backyard breeding.

oodledoodle · 17/07/2022 12:14

doubt the Op is coming back.

Whaddaya say, @FireC ? Grin

FlimFlamJimJams · 17/07/2022 14:00

Sounds like you've just got yourself a free dog to me

Why are so many people saying to get the dog neutered?! It’s so expensive and it’s not the OP’s dog!

Neutering will stop him from being for backyard breeding .
Back yard breeding is anyone breeding for greed ( Money) without extensive health testing for this most unhealthy of breeds.
Greeders cashing in, breeding for certain colours is so common.
But as it isn’t OP’s dog, it us unlikely she will get him castrated.
Far too many people breed recklessly and greedily without serious thought as to health and conformation - and temperament.

All that matters is money.
It’s Back yard breeders and puppy farms that fill up the rescue centres.

How do you know it's your neighbour reading her own messages OP and not someone that has stolen her phone?
I would be reporting her missing to the police.

liveforsummer · 17/07/2022 14:29

Most people have their phones locked so they not. No one but me can access my messages

Zone2NorthLondon · 17/07/2022 14:30

Text her that if she doesn’t collect the dog tomorrow you’ll take it dog charity to be rehomed as abandoned dog or a vet…
Really, she is taking the piss. Reads your text and choses not to answer.

heattreat · 17/07/2022 14:33

I would be reporting her missing to the police.

So your phone gets stolen? Which means you don't collect your dog? You don't replace the stolen phone, or contact your friend, or just go and collect your dog?

I don't the phones stolen, do you really?

Or maybe she's been kidnapped?

I think actually she's ignoring OP. No longer wants the dog.

kyria · 17/07/2022 14:41

I would ask her to get in touch with you ASAP or you will inform the police she is a missing person

CandidaAlbicans2 · 17/07/2022 14:56

"He's an expensive dog and she was planning on breeding him. Which makes it even stranger!"

Ah, she's a wannabe backyard breeder twat is she! 🙄
My guess is that she's a flakey chancer who's using you for free, open-ended, dog care until such time as she decides to come home from holiday/her bender, then she'll simply collect him and there's nothing you can do to stop her. As PPs have said, have a chat with the Police to find out where you stand legally and also to register your concern just in case she's in difficulties. You've been far too patient @FireC, time to get more assertive

daisychain01 · 17/07/2022 15:01

So your lovely "friend" has decided to dump that poor dog on you without a care in the world during the current heat wave, which has been in the news for well over a week, so it isn't as if they didn't know - giving you the problem of keeping the dog cool, hydrated and free from distress, when bulldogs are renowned for suffering from breathing problems.

Think again describing them as a friend, more like a frenemy. Shame on you both for not thinking things through and realising what a dreadful idea it was.

Marvellousmadness · 17/07/2022 15:05

Text her that youll be putting her dog in a pound /new family/youll sell it/etc if she doesn't pick it up by Friday

What a bitch.

Marvellousmadness · 17/07/2022 15:06

Or threaten to file a missing report case on her or something

SkeletonFight · 17/07/2022 15:07

Maybe the dog is stolen.

heattreat · 17/07/2022 15:07

Marvellousmadness · 17/07/2022 15:06

Or threaten to file a missing report case on her or something

Don't do that, the police have enough to deal with.

Windypants21 · 17/07/2022 15:13

Did she provide funds for feeding the dog ?

RedCardigan · 17/07/2022 15:54

Send her a message saying as she isn’t replying you are assuming she’s in to rule and unless she speaks to you on the phone then you’re going to the police and the dog is yours. Do a drive by her house. Whether you phone the police or not is up to you but it might make her get in contact. She’s got you on a very private Facebook setting, her friends are seeing more. She’s using you for free dog care at the vets and then will claim him when back and you won’t get the money back, don’t pay for treatment unless you want to lose money.

SleepingAgent · 17/07/2022 16:26

NeedToLeaveNow · 17/07/2022 01:15

Text and tell her
As i presume doggy is mine, Iv got doggy booked in for the snip!
Have a lovely weekend

She will reply within seconds i reckon

Yep if the heartless cow thinks her money is in danger you'll get a reply!

EllaB22 · 17/07/2022 16:39

V bizarre.. can you not walk to her house and ask her next door neighbours? Where did you meet this lady?

mycatisannoying · 17/07/2022 16:49

What an absolute bitch!

You sound lovely OP, and I hope the dog ends up with you.
How could she do this?!

CountryMouse22 · 17/07/2022 17:34

If you know where the works can you contact them to see if they've heard anything? Ditto any relatives? It's very irresponsible to dump an animal on you for so long.

CountryMouse22 · 17/07/2022 17:36

That should be: If you know where SHE works!
