My friend has left her dog with me

I have another thread in the dog forum, however, I'm desperate for some advice.

My friend left her dog with me while she was away for a couple of weeks. She's now been away for almost 6 weeks and I haven't heard anything from her. I've sent her messages regarding a potential vet visit and nail clipping. She's read the messages and hasn't replied. I've called her but it just rings out.

We're not super close, more like neighbours than friends, however, she's looked after my cat before and I thought this would be fine. I don't know what to do? Does anyone have and advice?

Sorry, no I don't know her that well. I have her on Facebook but she doesn't post anything on it apart from profile pictures.

Oh I thought you were looking after a friend's dog- turns out it's not a friend but just some random girl that you just happen to know, and have received a dog from?

HettyMeg · 17/07/2022 21:10

Just because someone has read messages doesn't mean they're OK. If it were me I'd contact the police and say I was worried about a missing person

AllyCatTown · 17/07/2022 21:21

Did you not agree a timescale when you took the dog?

When she briefly answered the phone did she not say anything about when she’d be back?

It’s very odd behaviour.

Have you sent any of the suggested messsges about putting the dog in kennels etc if you don’t hear back from her?

Ttc42nearly43 · 17/07/2022 21:39

My advice before you get even more attached is find out where you stand on keeping the dog. I would try phoning her and/or going to her house. Be prepared tho that she might turn up in the future and try to claim her dog back am not sure where u would stand in this case. Are you in a potential to offer to buy the dog off her so that ownership is properly transferred? I think that you need to find out what has happened to her in the first instance maybe there's a genuine reason why she's gone AWOL it does seem a bit odd when I had my dogs I was desparate to see them after a week's holiday.

Good luck.

People seem to be missing the bit where the OP rang her, they spoke briefly and then she hung up on her-sounded like she was in a bar or club.

She's clearly abandoned her dog and I'd imagine it's because the poor dog has some health issues or something expensive

OP didn’t say they actually spoke, just that the owner answered the phone briefly.

I asked earlier if OP actually her her voice but I doubt OP will be back now, especially as the rags have got hold of it.

Chuck2015 · 17/07/2022 23:41

Really as an owner of a brach dog she should be out of her mind with worry about him in this heat. Assuming she’s ok I would be concerned about her as an owner generally, any dog owners I know would never do this and would be missing their pet desperately. Glad you’re so fond of him, you’re obviously a very considerate and responsible person.

Nikki1066 · 17/07/2022 23:42

Tbf anyone could of opened her emails, if I was you I'd once more try to contact her give her so many days to respond and tell her that the dog will be taken to RSPCA/shelter if she doesn't respond. If you get nowhere then looks like you've got yourself a dog!! Poor thing at least it's with someone that loves it, so no ynbu and your "friend" is a dick and either way doesn't deserve the dog back in any circumstance. I'd give my kids away before my dog 🤣🤣 good luck

FireC · 16/07/2022 22:04

I've just phoned her and she answered the phone very briefly then hung up. It sounded like she was in a bar or music venue.

Message her this:

Oh my god the dog’s been stolen!!! What do I do???

Then see how she responds.

McClaire · 18/07/2022 00:30

Unless someone else has got hold of her phone and password.
Sounds like she's enjoying her holiday and stayed longer than planned.
Maybe you could contact the hotel.

HarmlessPotato · 18/07/2022 02:13

All abit odd really. I'd be wanting to know my dog was OK.
Has the time passed when she was meant to be returning? If so why don't you say you have your own holiday to go on and don't know what to do with the dog, that potentially you'll put it in a shelter.

Regards the not replying but "reading messages" I had a friend who moved to another country and missed wishing her older sister a happy birthday. Which was well out of character. Then when the family and friends tried contacting her someone was opening the messages and responding but you could tell it wasn't her - the language used, the punctuation etc was different. When you'd call the person made weird excuses why my friend couldn't come to the phone.
It turned out to be someone had stolen the phone while my friend was literally having a breakdown. She was missing for 10 days before being found wandering the streets in a state and ended up in an institution. She'd been sexually assaulted on the streets too, she was completed delirious. Everything she had on her was stolen including her shoes.
It sounds crazy but these things do happen.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 18/07/2022 04:33

Dreamwhisper · 17/07/2022 09:24

So on the one hand. That's really awful and sad and I would be keeping the dog because no fucker who cares an ounce it would leave it with someone for far longer than arranged and not even say anything. What if you had your own holiday or work commitments meaning you had to just put the dog in a shelter? It's incredibly irresponsible.

On the other hand, the crime junkie on me says, she is bothering to open and read every message you have sent, hasn't blocked you or left you on unopened, yet has not replied to any message for between 4 and 6 weeks.

You don't know where she lives so you can't physically see she is home safe, you don't have a sufficient social media relationship to tell whether she is genuinely posting herself, and you say you heard her talk once, briefly, on the phone, in a crowded or otherwise loud area.

Not many people (I'm sure some do though) spend between £2 and £3k on anything, let alone a companion animal, and just ditch it. Not many people can book a 2 week holiday but then disappear for 6 weeks.

If she was back home why wouldn't she pick the dog up? If she didn't want it why wouldn't she sell it to some other unsuspecting person or at least ask you if you want him? It's not hard to guess someone would get attached to the dog after 6 weeks. You've mentioned a potential vet trip but presumably the dog is not so ill it was worth mentioning in the OP so, presumably, he would be sellable.

Just some major major red flags in this situation. I agree with other posters saying I would send a message saying something along the lines of the following:

"Hi [ name ],

I'm sure you can understand that I'm a little concerned that you haven't made contact with me since you dropped Frenchie off. You advised you'd need dog care for 2 weeks but it's now been over 6 weeks with no word and I'm worried about you.

I have fallen in love with Frenchie over the 6 weeks we've spent together and I'm more than happy to keep him if you are no long able to care for him. However as anyone would be, I am worried about the lack of communication so please, give me a quick phone call to let me know you are okay.

If I continue to not hear from you at all I do feel like I should call the police to do a welfare check as I can see you are reading these messages, I honestly am just concerned about you at this point."

This is friendly, should cover all bases, and should help ease a response out of her if it is some kind of mental health crisis or difficult personal situation. It also gives fair and non threatening warning that you will contact the police if she doesn't get in touch with you.

P.s. Please attach dog pic for us Smile

Do this....

A police welfare check on her house is a good idea too!

This is literally genius!

Myhusbandsnores · 18/07/2022 11:20

I live in Canada and just woke up because my husband put on Your Morning (our GMTV equivalent) and they were discussing this thread!

Blantw · 18/07/2022 16:30

How do you know it is her reading the messages?

thecatswhiskas · 18/07/2022 20:33

Report to the Dog Warden as an abandoned dog. They have the legal responsibility for all strays and unowned dogs in England. You don’t have to place him in kennels, they’ll likely allow you to keep him with you while they try and contact the owner. They can also assist you if you really do want to rehome the dog. Though I’d get an insurance quote and look up
the costs of BOAS surgery, spinal surgery and the eleventybillion other conditions French bulldogs are prone to before you get anymore attached.

SavingsThreads · 21/07/2022 23:23

Are you coming back OP?

SkiingIsHeaven · 22/07/2022 00:14

OP has disappeared with her neighbour. Now the dog will have to do the updates or we will never find out what happened.

Insanelysilver · 23/07/2022 19:50

FireC · 16/07/2022 21:45

I would be, however, she has read all of my messages and been online, she's just not replying ☹️

I agree with ZarasizeMedium
i’d be trying to contact someone else who knows her and if not the police.
You know someone’s reading the messages but not that it’s her.
Did she seem to love her dog ? Only as a dog mum it seems very odd to me not to make contact after 6 weeks ! Where did she say she was going ?

SleepingAgent · 24/07/2022 14:21

Another one here wondering what's happened! Has friend reappeared? Does OP still have the dog? So many questions!

Me too, hate when folk don’t return for an update!!

Tillow4ever · 25/07/2022 23:43

Well thanks Mumsnet for sending a link to this thread that has 11 pages but no update from the OP beyond the first page or so! Really appreciate that……

honestly I’d be surprised if this thread is even genuine, but posting here so I get notified in case the OP comes back and updates us! All seems very suspicious.

DahliaMacNamara · 16/07/2022 22:19

Also curious about the French bulldog connection.

I'm going to go with feckless owners wanting the latest fashionable dog that costs a lot of money.

So the OP's acquaintance fits the bill.
