My friend has left her dog with me

I have another thread in the dog forum, however, I'm desperate for some advice.

My friend left her dog with me while she was away for a couple of weeks. She's now been away for almost 6 weeks and I haven't heard anything from her. I've sent her messages regarding a potential vet visit and nail clipping. She's read the messages and hasn't replied. I've called her but it just rings out.

We're not super close, more like neighbours than friends, however, she's looked after my cat before and I thought this would be fine. I don't know what to do? Does anyone have and advice?

OP posts:

This is so weird

@FirstFallopians yes, it is a French bulldog. Is there a reason why you thought this? Any information you have would be appreciated 😩

Extremely inbred with problematic breathing that needs surgery a lot of times to correct, expensive to insure, Likely Puppyfarmed.
Needs a better owner than that selfish woman
who wants to breed a problematic breed for greed.
No other reason.

You just left your cats with a stranger? She could have been that woman that put the cat in the bin for all you knew.

NC12345665 · 16/07/2022 23:49

Get the dog neutered.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2022 23:52

Why are so many people saying to get the dog neutered?! It’s so expensive and it’s not the OP’s dog!

butterfly990 · 16/07/2022 23:55

If you messaged her saying "I have found a bitch and will be breeding the dog. I am expecting to get £xxx for the puppies", I bet she would be back like a shot 😉

Pugdogmom · 16/07/2022 23:56

Just got my dog neutered 2 days ago. Similar size to a Frenchie. Cost £150. Just for record that it's not THAT expensive.
Appreciate not the OP's dog though, so wouldn't neuter someone else's dog unless she was definitely abandoning it.

I saw “expensive breed” and the fact that your acquaintance was planning to use him as stud and put two and two together.

I’m sure there’s some lovely responsible Frenchie owners, but at the moment they are very popular with people who see these dogs as an accessory.

You sound like a lovely, caring person. I just hope she hasn’t found out the dog has health issues that will come with £££ vet bills and she knows you’ll pick up the tab as you will quite understandably become attached to the poor thing.

For a number of reasons
a) Frenchies are dreadfully unhealthy and really shouldn't be bred from at all given the state the breed is in as a whole
b) Frenchies are overrepresented in shelter populations right now
c) the owner is an irresponsible fuckwit who has stated that they intend to breed this poor dog

There are a number of free and low cost spay / neutering schemes - check locally but for example
Certain London boroughs themayhew.org/community-vet-clinic/neutering/
Cardiff therescuehotelhealthcentre.com/whatwecharge/

She may have opened & read all your messages but may not have money to put on her phone to reply... she may be struggling... you need to go round and see if she's there

TeapotTitties · 17/07/2022 00:45

Just stop arsing about and call the police.

I know when everyone pointed out it might not be her reading the messages, you then went on to say she briefly answered the phone and hung up, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't phone them Hmm

What does this even mean lol

if you have enough data/service to receive a message, you have enough data/service to respond to the message. As far as I’m aware, not being able to pay your phone bill means your service is suspended so she wouldn’t be able to read the messages at all if you are correct. Wifi also exists.

how can op go around there when they don’t know where the neighbour is? They could be in Ibiza for all we know

Quweenie · 17/07/2022 01:08

Please don’t let her breed from this dog. 😞💔

Rainbowshit · 17/07/2022 01:13

You need to threaten that you'll take it to a shelter even if you don't mean to.

I wouldn't get too attached as she will probably demand it back at some point, I've heard of this happening even years afterwards.

Text and tell her
As i presume doggy is mine, Iv got doggy booked in for the snip!
Have a lovely weekend

She will reply within seconds i reckon

Ophanim · 17/07/2022 01:27

OP did she actually speak when she answered? Or just answered then hung up?

Ha ha yes this!

Rainbowshit · 17/07/2022 01:40

Is it chipped? If not get it done so she can't claim ownership if you have to keep the dog.

cakebytheoceon · 17/07/2022 01:57

Weird 🙄

CelestiaNoctis · 17/07/2022 02:09

Chip the dog with your info, get them neutered, block her.

Janinebutcher79 · 17/07/2022 02:13

ZaraSizeMedium · 16/07/2022 21:44

Erm… I’d be contacting the police. Aren’t you worried something has happened to her?

I Laigjed at this, then seriously thoight why the f haven’t you called the police?

timeisnotaline · 17/07/2022 02:18

I think I’d have the dog neutered no matter what- she hasn’t got a leg to stand on to object, and I hate to think of her trying to manage breeding the dog. I’d hate to think of how the dog would manage and be cared for, that is.

Ottersmith · 17/07/2022 02:23

I agree with the others. If he's not been microchipped then keep him and get him neutered. If you love him it's not fair on you to have to give him back to her when she clearly doesn't care about him.

willstarttomorrow · 17/07/2022 02:30

Ok presuming this is real...
My neighbours look after cat/plants and we do the same. We are not really friends but like each other and are civil, borrow tools, take in post etc. I remember doing the same growing up- I am a bit perturbed that so many people find this strange.

It is also very odd that so many posters assume the neighbour has been kidnapped or something and their captor is reading messages. Unless there is a huge backstory of a controlling partner or the neighbour being in hiding then it is very unlikely. I am not sure the police would do anything.

Of course it is a French Bulldog- they are the new pugs. Just getting a friendly, beautiful mutt is no longer a thing. To help with the inbred health problems and lots of new owners thinking they can make money by breeding.

OP- it sounds like you neighbour is either one of those flakey people who has gone off on a (very long) bender/holiday and will waltz back and pretend it is all okay and you are over reacting or has dumped the dog and gone. If you decide to keep the dog- which either way is your prerogative considering the circumstance, it will be a huge financial burden. Food, grooming, vaccinations and kennels when away for a start. Add pet insurance which will not really cover vets bills....

LordBuckley · 17/07/2022 03:08

She probably met some guy who hates dogs while she was on holiday.
