To resent womens football

Attictroll · 16/07/2022 20:36

And yes I know I am...only woman in my household and we usually have a family film etc Saturday night with food in front of telly. Oh no tonight it's football...I hate watching sport and this is just as boring as mens football and I'm sat here hating it - they all just wanted to watch the football. I could leave the room and be on my own but I wfh on my own all week!

Womens football is great I am sure but for me it's just more bloody football watched by the same people who watch mens...maybe we can cancel some mens football to even it up.

Absolutely YABU!

alphapie · 16/07/2022 20:39

Not going to say you're unreasonable, but I often like to remind myself that 10 years ago most male football fans would laugh at the idea of womens football. Let alone actively choose to watch it.

So I like to think of the positives of this shift. Even if it's still bloody boring to watch.

Thankfully DH is not a football guy but i suffer this football friendly when out at the pub, wishing anything else would be on but at the same time genuinely happy so many have moved with the times.

Spanielsarepainless · 16/07/2022 20:39

YANBU Even the golf from St Andrews would be preferable to more bloody football.

Skinnermarink · 16/07/2022 20:40

The good thing about football is there’s a time limit and it’s not ages. Hang on to that. We’ve had the cricket on this week and oh my Christ. It never seems to end.

Quite good for your kids to get behind it though no? More young people need to, or should be just as important as men’s football. So I wouldn’t go around being negative about it. I’d pour a wine and suck it up!

ZoeQ90 · 16/07/2022 20:42

I'm not a sport fan at all but the women's football makes me so happy. it's so exciting to think of all the little girls growing up thinking they can be a professional footballer and to hear everyone talking about it. i'm loving watching it grow in popularity.
although I only want to watch Lioness matches so it does annoy me when I just lose my partner for 3 weeks to yes, yet more football.

Icedbannoffee · 16/07/2022 20:42

I think it's brilliant people want to watch women's football, it wasn't long ago it was widely mocked and people wouldn't engage with it let alone choose to watch it on a Saturday night! Womens sports are never taken as seriously as men's, and many national players do so alongside jobs or they have to have financial support from family which closes the door to many. This is exciting for women's sport but I appreciate if you don't like football it's not the best thing.

Attictroll · 16/07/2022 20:44

Yes sucking it up is happening whilst faffing on mumsnet. Glad dc don't see it as different - tweenagers- but I want to block my ears to the blur of football noise and wish I'd planned to go out

OP posts:
Attictroll · 16/07/2022 20:45

I think I'm all for it as long as I don't have to watch it

BoJoGoGoGo · 16/07/2022 20:49

Yabu you should be watching the Matchplay 🎯

nocoolnamesleft · 16/07/2022 20:51

I don't like football. But consider it a positive that women's football has a higher profile, and audience.

underneaththeash · 16/07/2022 20:58

Lots of people you don’t know personally kicking the ball around.,,,what’s the point? Utterly dull.
although women’s football dues have less spitting.

Ontomatopea · 16/07/2022 20:59

So really you resent all football?

GreyTS · 16/07/2022 21:00

God I love football, and I'm so glad so many people including men are giving woman's football the respect and air time it deserves, I do get the hate for sports though, I feel the same about darts and snooker 💤 complete snoozefest

SweetPetrichor · 16/07/2022 21:13

YANBU, it's bad enough having men's football on the tv...don't need women's too! It's so boring.

Kite22 · 16/07/2022 21:15

Of course YABU to resent women's football.

The people / person you should be cross with is the person / people who feel their 'right to watch football' tonight somehow trumps your 'right to watch a film'.

There are so many ways to watch TV now - if you want to watch a film, then watch one. If for some reason there is only one screen in your house, then discuss how many matches it is reasonable to watch. I mean, I like the football, but don't have time to watch all the matches - life goes on. I prioritise the England games and pick up other bits when I can..

Pickanameforme · 16/07/2022 21:19

Women's football is great.

maddening · 16/07/2022 21:22

You need 2 entertainment areas imo so you can go off and enjoy your own thing.

Attictroll · 16/07/2022 21:27

Ontomatopea · 16/07/2022 20:59

So really you resent all football?

Yes that's probably more accurate-I actually probably resent sport. Hate doing it and watching it. And I am quite active think gym classes a few times a week tbh I'm typically a book and documentary type person and do really like competition stuff. And all the blah about sport encouraging fitness turned out to be rubbish after the 2012 Olympics failed to have impact.

I could sit in another room but enjoy being in the same room as my family - sucking it up - just need to factor Womens football events into planning to be out

OP posts:
Attictroll · 16/07/2022 21:28

Do not like competitive stuff I meant

Of all the major women’s sports which have gained in popularity & profile over the last decade, football has progressed fastest & furthest. The Lionesses are amazing and inspiring. 20 years ago, they looked like women trying to play football. Now, they look, move & play like footballers who happen to be female. Alessia Russo scored two brilliant goals last night which Harry Kane would have been proud of. It’s fantastic that young girls have the opportunity to watch her and her team mates on BBC1 in prime time.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/07/2022 22:02

I don't like football either OP - but I suck it up when it's women's football, especially when my kids want to watch. I only have boys, I want them to grow up thinking how weird it is that men's football has always been considered so much better than women's.

girlfriend44 · 16/07/2022 22:05

Sport is great and unscripted. The women's game is getting better and better all the time.

So glad for girls today that it's changing.

Samcro · 16/07/2022 22:19

nocoolnamesleft · 16/07/2022 20:51

I agree with this, but I am so glad I live in a house where no one likes football

Jaxhog · 16/07/2022 22:20

I hate football too. But do something else instead, as I do.

TBH, I'm quite pleased to see women getting more media attention in professional sports.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/07/2022 22:26

I got to have the Athletics on earlier as bargaining for the football. I fell asleep

It was way, way better than yet another slew of Big Bang Theory repeats.
