To cancel holiday to Brighton this weekend and buy an aircon unit and stay in

Had a holiday booked going tomorrow coming back on Monday. One of my dc has come up on a massive heat rash today and busy putting cold water on them and trying to keep cool all day.
Dh is annoyed because I want to cancel Brighton this weekend as the weather is looking scorching and I can see sitting on the beach with hot dc (9&7) with the whole place being packed being a nightmare in this heat.

Where I live is forecast as 40 degrees C (!!!!) but I can buy a portable air con unit keep it cool in the living room, dc have a 8ft paddling pool and a shady gazebo to use and then we can all hibernate in the air con room until the heat is over. 😂

I'm worried going to Brighton we'll all burn and get heat stroke, am I panicking and being a bore or am I being sensible. Please help. Have to cancel my Brighton booking by 4pm.

YABU!
it's going to be 23 and 26 degrees down here, perfect for a beach break.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/07/2022 13:25

Forecast is 22 tomorrow and 25 Sunday in Brighton, why would you cancel for that?!

Frannyhy · 15/07/2022 13:26

Yeah it’s lovely down here in Brighton.

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 13:27

@slipperblipper which air con unit?

Londonlass139 · 15/07/2022 13:28

If you're driving home on Monday and have air con in your car then I'd go. The heatwave is Mon/Tues.

Bunnyflop7 · 15/07/2022 13:29

Nah don’t cancel. There will be a breeze by the sea and Brighton is fab.

It's quite pleasant in Brighton the week. Nice sea breeze.

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 13:31

Thanks for these opinions. I'm already melting.
I am also worried about getting through Monday and Tuesday with no air con at home (mostly glass building one the living side and I wfh in a glass office. Joy.)
And I can't afford air con and Brighton.
Sorry I should have said that in my OP.

I’m in Brighton today - it’s warm but not unbearable - there’s a good breeze. If you go avoid Brighton beach and the area south of the train station and go further along to Carats cafe it is far less busy. Plan for low tide visits. The water is lovely and my kid has swum almost every day this week. Buy can see the advantages of staying in the garden too!

Yodaisawally · 15/07/2022 13:33

Go to Brighton.

I've got to go to Eastbourne tomorrow to visit an elderly relative. I'm concerned about the bloody traffic but not the weather on the coast.

RockinHorseShit · 15/07/2022 13:34

It's beautiful in Brighton right now, a lovely sea breeze & so far not too busy even by the pier & the sea is a lovely temperature. I'd say don't cancel

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 13:34

@PaperTyger ha does this determine it?! I've got one on John Lewis I'm eyeing up.

I'd actually buy an aircon and stay home.

luxxlisbon · 15/07/2022 13:35

I can’t imagine cancelling a family holiday holiday to make myself more comfortable for only 2 days!
Go on the holiday, it’s not going to be anywhere near 40 at the weekend, actually it will be perfect beach weather.
You will survive 2 hot days wfh next week, you can dress very lightly, have a constant supply of ice water, ice cream, cold showers etc.

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 13:35

Anything before Monday I would say is fine, Monday I'd be at home.

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 13:36

The family holiday will be moved to end of the summer hols we won't go without a holiday but we do have to wait until end of the holidays. Again apologies should have put that. Melting melting melting...

Brighton is costing £900 for 3 nights in not so amazing hotel. I'm thinking we could do something ok for that at the end of the holidays too...

And if we have a heatwave at the end if august?

South coast is mid to high 20's with a nice breeze atm and all weekend.

Yes, the beach will be packed but it always is this time of year. That's what any seaside resort is like in the U.K. in summer.

Skinnermarink · 15/07/2022 13:41

Have you actually checked the weather forecast for Brighton? I was there on Monday with my baby, it was fine. He had sunsuit on and one of those cover up hat things and we cooled off in the sea and chilled out in a hotel bar with air con. No drama.

you were bonkers to spend that much on three days in Brighton though. What were you thinking.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/07/2022 13:42

whose paying for the trip?

I personally think your being unreasonable derailing your family holiday time over two days

luxxlisbon · 15/07/2022 13:44

So you can’t afford aircon and Brighton but you can afford last minute cancellation fees, a new holiday in august and aircon?
I honestly don’t get it, it seems like you just want a reason to cancel. If you can move the holiday to august (when PP are right it could be hotter) and still buy aircon why can’t you stick the aircon on a credit card and pay it off next month since you can afford both by august?

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 13:45

@Skinnermarink the price is irking me too. Dh booked it and I agreed to it thinking it was super cheap break because we had failed to book anything. Then I found out the price! My thinking is air con unit £400 plus the rest ££ for a break in august anywhere we can find. We only live 2 hours away from Brighton as well.

pinkymurder · 15/07/2022 13:46

We spent £600 on an aircon unit a couple years ago. It's brilliant, so worth the money.

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 13:46

@luxxlisbon it's free cancellation up until 4pm. If I didn't get my money back I'd go. But I have a choice and seems expensive for Brighton.

We got an aircon last year. Best thing I ever did. Wish had done it years ago. Was a which best buy. We only use it ten days a year but its a revelation.
