To cancel holiday to Brighton this weekend and buy an aircon unit and stay in

Had a holiday booked going tomorrow coming back on Monday. One of my dc has come up on a massive heat rash today and busy putting cold water on them and trying to keep cool all day.
Dh is annoyed because I want to cancel Brighton this weekend as the weather is looking scorching and I can see sitting on the beach with hot dc (9&7) with the whole place being packed being a nightmare in this heat.

Where I live is forecast as 40 degrees C (!!!!) but I can buy a portable air con unit keep it cool in the living room, dc have a 8ft paddling pool and a shady gazebo to use and then we can all hibernate in the air con room until the heat is over. 😂

I'm worried going to Brighton we'll all burn and get heat stroke, am I panicking and being a bore or am I being sensible. Please help. Have to cancel my Brighton booking by 4pm.

I think I would cancel purely because I hate a pebbly beach! I love Brighton but the beach itself does nothing for me. And £900 for three nights is a bit expensive if it is not fantastic accommodation.
Can you compromise and try and find something cheaper for this weekend AND buy the aircon?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 15/07/2022 13:55

That's a lot of money for accommodation!
however it's booked now and I think that cancelling last minute because it's too expensive is a bit of a shame.
camping by the sea would be much much cheaper and probably more fun with young kids!!

cestlavielife · 15/07/2022 13:59

Will the air conditioner come in time now, often home items take longer to come, they are quite heavy, it might not arrive until late Monday or Tuesday

WatchoRulo · 15/07/2022 14:07

Yes, the beach will be packed but it always is this time of year. That's what any seaside resort is like in the U.K. in summer.
Not if you know where the quiet places are.

It’s nice and breezy here in Brighton at the moment! The sea is lovely and cool and if you have a car you can drive to the less busy, sandy part of the beach 😊

cheninblanc · 15/07/2022 14:24

Go to Brighton. Many people won't even be able to consider aircon and will just get on with it next week taking sensible steps to avoid issues

Samcro · 15/07/2022 14:33

its lovely in Brighton at the moment. just been in the garden and lovely breeze.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/07/2022 14:40

It’s lovely on the south coast today, if that helps. 26 degrees, pleasant breeze and clear blue sky. Has been for a while. It is forecast to be warmer at the beginning of next week, but I won’t be panicking - 30 degrees is perfectly acceptable. Of course, if you and everyone else buys an AC unit then global warming will get worse and maybe it won’t be as pleasant here in a decades time… ;)

Brighton is costing £900 for 3 nights in not so amazing hotel

😵‍💫 crikey. We have family who visit from the North & they stay in a reasonable, clean & comfortable, cheap & cheerful hotel, with travel & food included for a week for a lot less than that. We do get stitched up for prices living south 🥴 They Stay at The Albion Hotel near the pier, might be worth looking into for future trips

Ilikewinter · 15/07/2022 19:02

Xthe temperature nthis weekend wouldnt bother me but spedning £900 on 3 nights would put me in a mini meltdown!

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2022 19:03

Are you even going to get an air con unit right now ???

GreenManalishi · 15/07/2022 19:13

Get to Brighton and have some fun for the weekend! Your DP has booked the hotel and the money is spent.
Monday Tuesday will be a bit hot, you will move around as little as possible and have a few cold showers and be absolutely fine. I used to live in Canberra, Australia with no aircon and it used to hit the low 40s on the regular, get some cold beers in the fridge and a fan and you will survive!

junebirthdaygirl · 15/07/2022 19:47

Go to Brighton. Your dc will be disappointed at the sudden change. You will have a lovely weekend. Stay home and everyone will be cranky and out of sorts. A few hot days is doable when you all get home nice and refreshed after your break.

RockinHorseShit · 15/07/2022 19:51

Oh & for a make do, but effective air con, which will get you through a few days. Freeze bottled water & sit a bottle behind your fan to blow cold air into the room. We find the bottles last way longer than ice & our cats are loving it

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/07/2022 19:52

Go to Brighton. Have fun.

What you need to do is go outside of the centre of Brighton (there are great buses) to where the beach is less packed. Look at Saltdean, for example. Saltdean also has an outdoor swimming pool near the beach which you can book through Fusion app.

There’s a nice cafe by the beach there too.

NeverHadANickname · 15/07/2022 19:57

Honestly I'd get aircon. Could you see if you can still book somewhere cheaper? I live somewhere now where aircon is pretty standard and I know it isn't long each year but if I lived in the UK again I'd definitely get an aircon unit to help with the heat, especially the nights.

slipperblipper · 15/07/2022 20:51

Update, I have cancelled Brighton. I have an aircon unit coming next day delivery tomorrow so will get that and leave after it comes for a newly booked (cheaper) trip to Cornwall where it is cooler than where I live and has air con at the hotel so won't melt if it is too hot

We will be back for Tuesday so I hope the air con works as our village is 39c on Tuesday and I will definitely need it!
Thanks for the advice it did help me make a decision.
