Traditional British party

I’m British but live abroad and dc was born where we are. It’s coming up to their 4th birthday and I’d like to do a traditional British mini party at home for grandparents & cousins etc.
So far I’ve got sandwiches, jelly & ice cream, donuts, popcorn, mini pizzas, sausage rolls, crisps & mini British cakes-Mr Kipling etc.
We’ll do pass the parcel, musical chairs, musical statues, Superman song, Birdie song…anymore ideas?
Trying to recapture/remember my 80’s childhood 🤣

Wel, you'll be needing a cheese and pineapple hedgehog (stuck in a foiled potato) for starters.

TheSpottedZebra · 11/07/2022 17:41

And obviously Agadoo.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2022 17:41

sleeping lions
warm beer
and (if you where in my family) a game of Are You There Moriarty?

Howhotisitjeeez · 11/07/2022 17:42

@TheSpottedZebra Of course!!! Perfect 🤣

And have you enough room for a conga?
To the Russ Abbott song, of course.

And a home made cake. Sliced up for the party bag with nowt else but a smelly eraser.

TheMess · 11/07/2022 17:44

Hula hoops in a bowl (to be eaten from fingers).

faffadoodledo · 11/07/2022 17:48

Pin the tail on the donkey/local beast of choice.

ApplePippa · 11/07/2022 17:48

Balloons!!!! - string attached to each one and then tied up in bunches. (And you absolutely must have at least one bunch that consists of one long and two round for the adults to snigger at..)

Howhotisitjeeez · 11/07/2022 17:48

@TheSpottedZebra Yes, Conga! The grandparents will love being forced into this 😬😂
Homemade, most likely rubbish cake being produced too

theclangersarecoming · 11/07/2022 17:59

No 80s British kids’ party was complete without a lengthy game of “In and out the dusty bluebells”…. Or “oranges and lemons” at the very least!

Thursa · 11/07/2022 18:03

Cheese and pineapple on sticks were always the first things to disappear at our kids parties. Also chocolate crispie/cornflake cakes or butterfly cakes.

Simon Says?

strawberrylacey · 11/07/2022 18:03

Mini pizzas probably is too modern, and popcorn not a good idea for little ones due to choking. I'd do an assortment of cheese, pickle, ham and jam sandwiches, crisps (quavers, chipsticks, hula hoops especially), party rings, cocktail sausages, cheese and pineapple sticks etc. with plenty of squash to drink. Jelly and ice cream is a must!

Also party hats, noisemakers, paper cups and plates, lots of balloons and streamers!

As for the cake, to make it a true retro party I'd do a homemade Victorian sponge sandwich, jam and cream and icing sugar on top. Birthday child can cut the first slice at the end of the birthday song. No fancy fondant, candles or decorations on top but it tastes a lot better than shop-bought/professional fancy cakes!

strawberrylacey · 11/07/2022 18:04

As for the games, pass the parcel, musical statues/chairs, oranges and lemons are always good picks.

UrsulaPandress · 11/07/2022 18:06

Bonny bluebells!!!!!

Howhotisitjeeez · 11/07/2022 18:07

@strawberrylacey I’m doing a homemade Pink panther cake 😂🤷🏻‍♀️She’s desperate for one…at least it fits the theme!

Howhotisitjeeez · 11/07/2022 18:09

@theclangersarecoming I remember the ‘Oranges and lemons’ song but not the game 🤔

You and another adult form an arch and sing while the children run under it.

faffadoodledo · 11/07/2022 18:10

We did a couple of traditional kids parties when we lived in the states. The locals were baffled! Be prepared to have to explain everything!

Tomanyhandbags · 11/07/2022 18:10

Chocolate fingers, you can't have a party without them.

sashagabadon · 11/07/2022 18:11

Sleeping lions for when you want a rest!
