To find slow handicapping at Wimbledon seriously annoying

Quia · 10/07/2022 15:59

Every time someone calls for a challenge, the stupid slow handicapping starts up. Why? It feels like they're trying to bully the player for daring to challenge, which makes them look particularly stupid when it turns out the challenge is valid. It's not as if they're impatient at having to wait, as the check happens very quickly. Time for the crowds to stfu?

It’s just a tradition. It’s happened for years and nobody minds.

Sahara123 · 10/07/2022 16:04

And no , it doesn’t bother me , it’s not aimed at the players and it’s just what you do.

This. They're not handclapping the players, they're handclapping the Hawkeye challenge as it appears on the screen, as a build up to the "in or out" revelation.

RollingInTheCreek · 10/07/2022 16:10

Hand clapping…? I don’t mind it it’s almost like a drum roll!

Viviennemary · 10/07/2022 16:10

I find all of Wimbledon seriously annoying. Too tedious by far.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 10/07/2022 16:12

It’s a drum roll not bullying the player for challenging.
Im finding Kyrgios behaving like a spoilt brat far more annoying

WhyDoesItAlways · 10/07/2022 16:14

More annoyed at the way the commentators keep minimising Kygrios's aggressive behaviour TBH.

Can't get worked up about the handclapping 👏

coffeecupsandfairylights · 10/07/2022 16:15

It's not bullying, it's like a drumroll until the official camera shows whether it was in or out.

I like it - it adds to the atmosphere Grin

Quia · 10/07/2022 16:32

Sodding autocorrect. Handclapping.

The slow handclap is defined as a way of showing disapproval. This started way before Hawkeye when the best players could do was to query a call with the umpire, so there is no slow drumroll element - in fact it was used principally with players like McEnroe housed to argue quite persistently. If they wanted to do the drumroll, it would be much more effective to clap in an actual drumroll rhythm or to do it vocally.

It's not a slow hand clap, it increases in tempo to build excitement to the the reveal. If you think they are expressing disapproval at the challenge, you are simply wrong. If you insist on viewing it this way and hence disapproving, YABU.

Are you just going to ignore those of us telling you that's it's a drumroll, and not a slow handclap aimed at the players? As someone who has done this handclap, I promise you I'm not at all doing it to express disapproval.

jetadore · 10/07/2022 16:54

You’re gonna hate the Olympic long jump then

Sorry, you’re wrong. It is not meant in an aggressive way. Wimbledon encourage it, it’s not frowned upon at all. I go every year, it’s not bullying.

SofiaSoFar · 10/07/2022 17:00

Of course it's not bullying the players.

You've got totally the wrong end of the stick.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/07/2022 17:02

It’s not as annoying as the men (always) who have to have the last ‘shout out’ of a players name just before they serve.

As if the player is going to think "Well I wasn't going to try my best but now that one guy just called out to me..."

Also the inenvitable shout of "Come on Tim!". It was funny the first time, 10 or so years ago.

But it's not a slow handclap.

It's designed as a drum roll to build tension. It's not bullying and Wimbledon actively encourage you to do it!

It's really tedious.the whole thing would be better without the crowd. It reminds me of when all the MPs keep mooing and stuff in parliment

Not a fan of live sport then I take it?

balalake · 10/07/2022 17:52

I find the grunting worse.

In any case, it's only two weeks a year and you can always mute the sound for a few seconds.

No I like the sport. Just all the noise. I do have sensory issues though.

That’s understandable.

BlackberrySky · 10/07/2022 17:58

Have you not been watching Wimbledon long OP? Clapping the hawkeye is a well established tradition and demonstrates the spectators' engagement with the match.
