To find slow handicapping at Wimbledon seriously annoying

Every time someone calls for a challenge, the stupid slow handicapping starts up. Why? It feels like they're trying to bully the player for daring to challenge, which makes them look particularly stupid when it turns out the challenge is valid. It's not as if they're impatient at having to wait, as the check happens very quickly. Time for the crowds to stfu?

It’s a drumroll, peaking when the decision is shown on the screen.

Do keep up dear.

It's not a slow hand clap, it increases in tempo to build excitement to the the reveal. If you think they are expressing disapproval at the challenge, you are simply wrong. If you insist on viewing it this way and hence disapproving, YABU.

But it doesn't increase in tempo, not least because the result comes up so quickly. If they want to do a drumroll, why not do a drumroll, not continue a tactic that (a) is universally recognised as showing disapproval and (b) certainly started at Wimbledon as showing disapproval?

Have you not been watching Wimbledon long OP? Clapping the hawkeye is a well established tradition and demonstrates the spectators' engagement with the match.

As you would know if you had read my posts, I've been watching Wimbledon since before Hawkeye was invented.

I think you and I have been watching different Wimbledons! It always increases in tempo and is patently not a slow handclap. Slow handclaps don’t tend to be how the Wimbledon crowds show displeasure - you usually get boos or whistles if they’re unhappy with a player.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/07/2022 18:33

I've also been watching, and attending, Wimbledon since long before Hawkeye was invented and it is absolutely not a slow handclap and as others have said, does increase in tempo. It has happened at Wimbledon and other tournaments ever since the challenge system was introduced.

malmi · 10/07/2022 18:35

Why not just clap along at the same tempo but delayed so it fills in the gap between the rest of them, whilst bellowing "We do not disapprove"

Florenz · 10/07/2022 18:36

They should behave more like a Darts crowd, everyone drunk and in fancy dress shouting incoherently.

I’ve never, ever heard anyone with your views before. It absolutely does increase in tempo very gradually ending in applause. It’s a cute tradition, no more, no less.

Apologies, should have written "paying attention to" as opposed to "watching".

It’s a drum roll not bullying the player for challenging.
Im finding Kyrgios behaving like a spoilt brat far more annoying

Wasn't he the sulkiest player ever, far worse than Macenroe ever was? It was outrageous, also the way he kept his cap on when shaking hands etc. Rude!

The hand clapping is just a drum roll, nothing more.

How can it increase in tempo very gradually when the Hawkeye result comes back within around 5 seconds?

It’s not as annoying as the men (always) who have to have the last ‘shout out’ of a players name just before they serve.

It’s really not always men! I was at the Nadal QF this week and there was the most annoying woman shouting out Come on Rafa before every point. Drove me crazy.

Quia · 11/07/2022 00:41

This is a drum roll:

Does that sound anything like what happens at Wimbledon?

Definition of slow handclap:

slow rhythmic clapping, esp used by an audience to indicate dissatisfaction or impatience
