Victoria Derbyshire should not co-present Newsnight

Just been announced she will co-present Newsnight and I am so disappointed.

Can't stand her presenting or interviewing style - she's completely ruined Ukrainecast.. All lightweight 'oh my god!' to everything, over-emoting, asking everyone how they feel about things rather than getting the facts, and trying to find some way to centre herself in the story.

She's entry level ITV daytime at best. What on earth were they thinking??

I find her really irritating.

Minimalme · 08/07/2022 16:04

Omfg. Nothing against her but I can't imagine how she will cope.

UrsulaPandress · 08/07/2022 16:06

Far too lightweight

Gilmorehill · 08/07/2022 16:08

I agree. She’s a lightweight.

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/07/2022 16:10

She’s hideous. So patronising and hectoring.

BlueGlassOfDoom · 08/07/2022 16:12

YANBU, have disliked her lightweight/sensationalist style since her Radio 5 days but am selfishly very happy about this as I never watch Newsnight (too late for me - listen to The World Tonight on Radio 4 instead) and am glad she’ll be off the BBC News channel in the daytime!

DappledThings · 08/07/2022 16:16

Never heard anything of hers before Ukrainecast. I'd heard of her but not heard or seen her.

I've liked her on it though. It's a podcast that is based on personal stories and her and Vitaly work really well together on it.

Which is not to say she would translate well to Newsnight but I do think Ukrainecast is a very different beast which she is good on.

I don't think she's hideous but so what if she is, Newsnight isn't a beauty competition.

Notonthestairs · 08/07/2022 16:19

It is possible that she presents according to the nature of the programme - so day time telly gets X, Newsnight gets Y.

But Maitlis' shoes will be hard to fill.

Theluggage15 · 08/07/2022 16:22

It’s the constant sighing she does that puts my teeth on edge. Can’t stand listening to her. She’s a total lightweight.

kewgirl · 08/07/2022 16:33

Sad to say she has got the job to tick the equality box

Err why.

I have a lot of admiration for Victoria Derbyshire after she posted her breast cancer treatment online.

Arenanewbie · 08/07/2022 17:20

I also think that she is adapting her style to the nature of the program. She was very different presenting BBC news at 9am from her Victoria Derbyshire show. She was also very good at Question time recently instead of Fiona Bruce.
Tbh I wasn’t the biggest fan of her show at first ( I thought she was too soft while discussing elections with the Great British public) but I’ve changed my mind later. She is very professional.

I’m not describing her looks. Couldn’t give a toss what she looks like. This is about her interviewing style, which is hideous.

Frazzled2207 · 08/07/2022 18:15

I don’t mind her. But she’s
not in the league of Emily M. Or Kirsty for that matter.

that said I think NN is in a bit of a crisis, with Lewis G leaving. He’s brilliant and destined for great things I think.

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 08/07/2022 18:19

I‘m a bit puzzled at her getting the Newsnight gig because I wouldn’t have thought it was her style, but she’s actually really good on Ukrainecast: the whole point is that it’s a mixture of military/political analysis with very personal first-hand accounts, and that needs more of a touchy-feely vibe. As a pp said, she‘s really good with Vitali, and supplemented by more hard-hitting analysts like Frank Gardner.

longwayoff · 08/07/2022 18:23

I'm not keen on Victoria but she may work out. Wasnt that struck by Susanna Reid at the BBC but I've caught a couple of her recent interviews on ITV and been impressed. Give her a chance.

Damnautocorrect · 08/07/2022 18:28

i really liked her tv program. It wasn’t really lightweight and covered news issues as well as more in-depth reporting like the mesh scandal.

i haven’t heard the podcast. But she was good on her tv show

Well that wasn't what you said was it, you said she's hideous which was unpleasant and unnecessary.

What on earth do you mean? There are plenty of serious female presenters.

hopeishere · 08/07/2022 18:33

She older so that's the "equality" people are referring to.

I don't like her style. Surprised she got Newsnight. Naga tried that for a while but didn't last.

Riverlee · 08/07/2022 18:41

Still confused by the equality thing. Victoria is 53, and Emma Maitkess was 51. Hardly a big difference.

Nat6999 · 08/07/2022 18:41

I liked her when she presented Question Time a few weeks ago, she wasn't so biased in favour of the Tories unlike Fiona Bruce.

Minimalme · 08/07/2022 19:24

Oh stop it @ancientgran or I'll pop you on the naughty step!

Using hideous to describe someone's behaviour or actions is perfectly fine.

grannybiker · 08/07/2022 20:17

Very few of those admiring her sharing of her breast cancer story had personal experience of BC, so, like me, assumed she was being "Brave" and "supportive."
Many BC patients HAVE (Mainly financial,) to carry on working, without a make-up / hair team to help out at dodgy times.
Having been there now, I realise just how patronising and "Look at me!" she was being. Not a serious reporter at all IMHO
