AIBU to go to Liverpool passport office to fast track a first passport ?

My sister is due to go to Paris with her school in about a week and a half and although I applied for her passport ages ago, I've not yet received it.

I've tried to book appointments online to get it fast tracked but there are none

Should I go tomorrow morning to the passport office in person and get it done or will I be turned away?

No there’s no point in turning up there without an appointment you’ve got absolutely zero chance of getting one on the day you’re better off going through the Internet.

Firesidefox · 07/07/2022 18:22

You need to find out which passport office is dealing with it, eg it could be Belfast, Durham etc, not just Liverpool. And there seems no rhyme or reason behind which office does it, so it's not your nearest necessarily.

user0786 · 07/07/2022 18:23

It says Liverpool on the tracking

I work right by Liverpool passport office & the queue outside is halfway down the road by 7.30am. I don’t think they let you in if the passport is in process & just turn you away but I could be wrong

Bigsislookingforadvice · 07/07/2022 18:56

Neighbour of mine went to Durham on Monday (tracking showed it there). Up there for 7am, got seen and told would be posted next day to them or for £92 could get it ft same day

ShaneTwane · 07/07/2022 18:59

I was going to say I work by there and the queue is down the road every morning so you might not get any luck.

curlycat · 07/07/2022 19:10

Look at the Passport Chaos group on FB. It's full of great advice. Right now you can only turn up without an appointment if you are travelling within 48 hours

FredaFox · 07/07/2022 19:48

I've read several messages of Liverpool having really long queues with very slim chance of them doing anything

Nothappyatwork · 08/07/2022 08:18

All this talk of passport chaos we got my eldest daughters within a week honestly don’t know what people’s issue is

Yorshiregass32 · 08/07/2022 08:26

Nothappyatwork I submitted my Ds's 2 weeks ago, had the confirmation email yesterday to say it's being printed and then despatched.

Good luck OP. My friend managed to get hers by making an appointment and driving to the Liverpool office. Try ans get an appointment. You sound like a lovely sister.

I applied for 4 mid June, all forms filled in the same day, all the old passports returned on the same day. One is back, one has been approved, two have been being processed since the old passports were received.
Do you think people are making it up?

Yeah, cos the people with an issue all received theirs back in a week too, and are just pretending they didn’t for fun. What a pointless, stupid and quite rude post 🙄

maddening · 08/07/2022 08:39

@Nothappyatwork

Well aren't you a smug little so and so? I've been waiting 10 weeks for my daughter's renewal and been told no guarantee passport will be ready by our August holiday. I can apply for an expedited service in a few days but again no guarantee, and that's tough luck.

How lovely for you that your passport arrived promptly. Any applications from mid May onwards seem to have flown through. (My adult son's took 16 days.) But there is a massive backlog of people who applied between the end of February and early May, when the official estimated time was maximum 6 weeks, and these are the ones in a black hole! The new applications are being prioritised for manipulation of figures so the smarmy government (what's left of it) can say "on average applicants are getting their passports well within 10 weeks, aren't we doing well, nothing to see here". There are 14,500 members of the FB passport chaos group in the same boat.

That's what the "fuss is about" you ignoramus.

OP, make sure the travel date is noted on the application if you haven't already. The HMPO text service will do this for you. It does work because I used the text service again a few days later and asked them to tell me what date they had.

You can email the upgrade team if the application is more than 6 weeks old. They will probably charge a fee. If more than 10 weeks old email the expedited services team.

If no movement you can visit a passport office. Can be your nearest not necessarily the one dealing with the application. Officially you aren't meant to but people are going and being seen, but unless you have an appointment, or are 24-48 hours before travel they may turn you away. You can go on behalf of someone else if you can show you have permission. Please be aware that some offices don't see any walk ins on Saturdays and all offices are closed Sundays.

Re getting an appointment. If you get a call back from the upgrade or expedite team they may give you an appointment to go and collect passport from an office on an appointment basis. Other than that appointments seem to be for fast track applications only and you can't apply for fast track if you have an application in the system already. If you wanted to withdraw app and reapply for fast track, be aware that if its a renewal you need to get the old passport back from HMPO. I enquired about this and the Belfast office said it could take 3-4 weeks to find it so I gave up on that idea. Also make sure there are fast track appointments available. Some are released each evening so you have to keep checking!

Good luck OP. Its utterly shambolic and I feel like those of us who applied early for summer holidays are somehow being punished and the Johnny come Latelies who left it until June are getting theirs within days! Crazy!

tobuild · 08/07/2022 09:35

You can turn up to any passport office within 48 hours of your flight and there is a chance you will get it.

Join Passport Chaos 2022 Facebook group and you will see the best tips.

Don't book a normal fast track appointment as you can't get a passport via this route whilst you have another application pending, and it can take time to withdraw the original application.

I think they’re exaggerating yes, its a miracle isn’t it that I sent off three passports 10 days ago and we’ve just had notification that all three have been printed and are on their way, it’s just me I’m so lucky 🙄

lanthanum · 08/07/2022 11:58

It does seem very random. I was the countersignatory for two passports; one came back very quickly, the other has been several weeks already. They will have been in different queues because one was under 12 and one was over.

Someone I know had to go down the emergency route because it took more than 10 weeks for them to look at her child's passport, and they rejected it because they'd now turned 16.

Good for you - I applied for my DC’s passports in March and they took almost 12 weeks to come back.

Just because you didn’t have a problem doesn’t mean no one else has 🙄

HereLiveIAmNotACat · 08/07/2022 17:50

Hahaha. What a moron ‘it didn’t happen to me so it isn’t happening’.

Nevermind the 35,000 that are still without passports after applying 10+ weeks ago

Seriously because it's not happening to you "it's not happening ". You don't listen to the press, read the news I'm guessing.

You ARE a lucky one.
I've been waiting since April. Not a peep since then.

Go on . Fingers in your ears LLaLa La I'm exaggerating!

You don't work at Durham Pasport Office do you?

Dad in five month passport battle said people 'in tears' in queue www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/dad-five-month-passport-battle-24437500

Hereforthekicks · 08/07/2022 18:23

Go to the office. My daughter went twice and got told the second time people travelling the very next day were being prioritised. They called her when it was ready to pick up the day before. Take id with you.

waveyourpompoms · 08/07/2022 18:23

@Nothappyatwork So because it didn’t happen to you it’s not happening to anyone?

Darbs76 · 08/07/2022 18:24

There’s definitely a backlog, anyone claiming there isn’t clearly knows nothing about it. Some passports are being done quickly, others are definitely not.

it’s not helpful but it does advise not to book travel until you have the passport.
