I did a massive shop the other week, spent over £250 quid, spent ages browsing the clothes and homewares, stocking up tins and freezer stuff.

I’ve just received a sodding parking ticket in the post because apparently the car park has a 2 hour limit and I was in there 2 hours and 10 minutes!

I know they have them to stop people using supermarket car parks as all-day parking but 2 hours? It’s pretty easy to spend 2 hours shopping, and I’d have bought a hell of a lot less if I’d realised I had to be out quicker.

I know that Tesco subcontract parking to an independent company so no point complaining I guess. And no I didn’t pay attention to the signs, or think about what time it was when I was in the shop. Never occurred to me that the parking rules would apply to genuine shoppers.

Any update @HaveringWavering? Has Tesco contacted you?

I feel stupid now. I did the same as the op, overstayed on my 2 hours parking limit. I didnt realise. I got a ticket through the door and paid up as i realised i had made a mistake. I didnt think about going on mumsnet and blaming everyone but myself and making me the victim.

On the plus side, it gave you the chance to be sanctimonious.

I’m glad you’re happy with paying £40 for the privilege of shopping in a supermarket @FayeGovan . It must be nice not to care about stuff like that.

Tesco have not called me back since I left my number on the parking tickets sheet.

I need to pay the fine today otherwise it doubles yo £70. I’m on holiday so can’t go in to chase.

I don’t think the Mirror have done a splashy follow-up with Tesco’s heartfelt response either. Too busy with the Tory leadership race I suppose…

Well, maybe you should have. Nothing wrong with challenging a stupid decision based on rules that clearly weren't supposed to apply to situations like this.

HaveringWavering · 14/07/2022 10:33

To be clear, I’m not “challenging” anything. The rules were clear and I broke them.

I’m asking for Tesco to use their discretionary power to have the fine overturned on the basis that I am collateral damage in a rule designed to deter non-shoppers for using them for parking.

You’re obviously the far superior person, FayeGovan. Hope you feel better about yourself for having got that off your chest.

I'm sure Tescos will be eternally grateful that you didn't make a dent in their billions of profits. They really couldn't have coped with that!

More fool you!

BEAM123 · 17/07/2022 11:23

OP mine was overturned even after it had risen to £70. I went on the online form for the parking company and explained the date and time I spoke to Tesco and who I spoke to.

Go through the look on the parking fine letter and don't pay. If they don't overturn it later ask to pay the £35 on the basis that nobody got back to you even though you contacted them on time.

Florenz · 17/07/2022 11:33

The limit should be longer, our Tesco extra has a hairdressers and a barbers in it, plus Subway, Greggs and the massive shop itself. It''d be very easy for a mother with children to buy them a snack from Greggs on the way in, then the mother has her hair done in the hairdressers, takes her 4 sons to the barbers to get their hair cut, then do a big shop including trying on clothes, then stop at Subway for lunch on the way out, and eat the food in the shop to save mess in the car. That could easily take over 2 hours.

Tesco can get it overturned for you, they're the ones who employed the subcontractor. Check bank record or clubcard records. It often gets sorted out quicker if you tweet them or put it on Facebook, they don't want the bad publicity.

Agree about Tweeting. You usually get a DM and they sort it out behind the scenes and then tweet 'happy to have helped!' when they created whatever miserable situation it is in the first place.

riesenrad · 17/07/2022 13:02

Tesco can get it overturned for you, they're the ones who employed the subcontractor that is usually the case but not always. Sometimes the shops are subject to the landlord's arrangements with the car park companies. That said, you'd think Tesco would have the necessary clout with the landlord!

Pedallleur · 17/07/2022 13:54

Tesco have no interest. It's a private company, prob Parking Eye. It's their job. They post the rules around the car park. When I overran by 10 mins it was my fault. Sign told me 45 mins were free and my reg was recorded. Unless the store has a validation policy you are out of luck.
