I did a massive shop the other week, spent over £250 quid, spent ages browsing the clothes and homewares, stocking up tins and freezer stuff.

I’ve just received a sodding parking ticket in the post because apparently the car park has a 2 hour limit and I was in there 2 hours and 10 minutes!

I know they have them to stop people using supermarket car parks as all-day parking but 2 hours? It’s pretty easy to spend 2 hours shopping, and I’d have bought a hell of a lot less if I’d realised I had to be out quicker.

I know that Tesco subcontract parking to an independent company so no point complaining I guess. And no I didn’t pay attention to the signs, or think about what time it was when I was in the shop. Never occurred to me that the parking rules would apply to genuine shoppers.

£250.00 on a big shop i would give my right arm to be able to afford £250.00 to use as a big shop ...infact i would love to be able to afford £250.00 at Tesco I think the parking fine is not the issue here and think that you are just bragging that you can afford £250.00 and afford to shop at Tesco when everyone else is struggling to shop at cheaper retailers ...pay your fine ffs

Don't be ridiculous! As if this is a humble bragging thread!

Tescos is always bloody busy, so 10000s can afford to shop there!

You're saying pay the fine out of pure jealousy!

WalkingOnTheCracks · 09/07/2022 06:16

They can't say, "oh you spent loads of money so we won't fine you"

Well, yeah, they can, and they do. I know, because I've done exactly the same thing and they said - wait for this, it may shock you - "oh you spent loads of money so we won't fine you"

Just here to add that I’ve worked in Tesco before, and been sent to multiple stores. They absolutely do have the power to override fines. When new workers start the system almost always doesn’t process their number plate as belonging to a worker and most get fines, you just had to take them into the store and they’d get them cancelled.
I would go in and be very understanding of the fact that you are aware that you overstayed but as you were actually inside the Tesco shopping the entire time you don’t feel it’s entirely fair. Show them the card payment/Clubcard statement and see what they say.
I hope it works out for you, our local Tesco is huge and has a cafe, hairdressers, nail salon etc, you could easily blow through two hours!

Thanks @Whatwouldyoudo24 , that approach is exactly what I have in mind-much more begging for mercy than going on the offensive. That said, if I hit a brick wall I can imagine myself raising my eyebrows and saying “So you’d rather I had stayed in store less time and spent less? Okaaay, duly noted”.

I do think that Tesco are in the wrong with having agreed such a short limit, but that’s not a conversation to have with in-store customer services.

OP posts:
maddening · 09/07/2022 08:13

If no time to go to the store I would pay horizon and then complain to tesco and ask that they refund you the cost of the parking.

I would also point out to them that where a.car Park is attached to a smaller store in a town or city centre then the need to impose time limits on parking is necessary, but that their blanket approach to even stores like the one you have visited is daft and self defeating,.there is nowhere else to go except their store and no other reason to park there.

🤣🤣🤣

Maybe OP's big shop lasts all month. Two months. Who knows? Who cares? But bragging? Again, just ... 🤣🤣🤣

SandAndSea · 09/07/2022 08:45

MN is so weird sometimes. I know no one in RL who wouldn't agree with you, OP.

Firstly, I wouldn't assume it's a legal ticket as many aren't. I would check out Martin Lewis's forum on how to deal with it. (This might not apply to you as a lawyer, but you never know.)

Secondly, I would absolutely contact the shop manager. Call if you can't get there.

Good luck with it!

Teachertotutor · 09/07/2022 09:39

You should be able to appeal. I have appealed several tickets on my mum-in-law's behalf as somehow she manages to spend hours in Aldi! If you can prove you've spent a lot, they should refund you.

But not everyone is on the breadline and as we're not defining this 'big shop' that you're so offended by there's no reason to comment on it.

For all we know the OPs big shop could have been a month or more worth of groceries and the reason she was in there so long that she was checking prices to make sure her money went as far as possible.

The 2 hour limit is not intended to stop people taking their time shopping in tesco, more to stop people using it as a park and ride or similar and taking spaces away from paying customers.

HaveringWavering · 09/07/2022 19:35

So, called in this evening and spoke to customer services. The staff member I spoke to was pleasant enough - not hugely chatty and didn’t really express a view, but did immediately agree to take the details and pass them to the manager, who had just left for the day. Pulled out a sheet that had clearly been created for taking details about parking notices and already had about 5 other people’s info on it. Interestingly she didn’t want to take any info from the receipt, or my Clubcard number. Said the manager would call me. I guess that’s all I can do for now. I’ll pay it if I don’t hear back before it goes up from £30 to £70.

Tesco are beyond crap but how did you contact CS?

Our nearest tesco chill section packs up whenever the temp goes above 25C, been happening for years but tonight i thougt i'd complain....after driving in specially to get ingredients for a Quiche for my DD - its proven to be impossible, even Whatsapp is a botfest.

HaveringWavering · 09/07/2022 20:00

I just went up to the Customer Seevuces desk in store.

I’d already tried the phone line but it had a recorded message saying “if you’re calling about a parking fine call the parking company directly”. I think that discretion with this sort of thing sits with individual local managers.

No. For interpreting it as bragging.

Itisasecret · 09/07/2022 21:00

MN is pathetic at times. You’re getting lots of shades of green here op. TESCO absolutely will have the power to cancel the fine, it’s to deter people who aren’t in their store. They will want customers who spend £250 on a shop to stay. Go and get it cancelled with TESCO.

Agree with PPs and email the he store manager to complain you probably aren’t the first person who has been caught out like this.

My local massive tesco has loads and loads of different concessions inside, like Holland and Barrett’s and different clothing brands, it’s more like a mall and is over two floors. You could easily spend a couple of hours in there if you was browsing clothes, seeing the chemist, had an opticians appointment and did a food shop as well

A large Tesco in my next town has a hairdressers in it, so yes you’d easily go over the 3 hours free parking. It’s happened to me. I just went to customer service and they sorted it. Also happened when using their excellent hand car wash Very popular but always put you over your time. A call from car wash worker up to customer service sorted it immediately

Denny53 · 12/07/2022 17:29

absolutelynotfabulous · 08/07/2022 18:42

Why is it relevant how you spent your time whilst using the car park? The only relevant fact is that you overstayed. The parking company couldn't give a shiny shite about how long your receipt is or what time you left the shop. They only care about getting their money.

The parking company don’t give a shit but Tesco do. OP phone the branch you shopped at tomorrow. Ask for customer service. Explain what happened. Tell them you have receipt. I guarantee they will cancel it.

HaveringWavering · 12/07/2022 20:09

I’ve been in and spoken to them, waiting for manager to call back, it’s al in my previous posts.
