Yes because you can not determine where they come from you should be proud of your county

You know for some people that’s just their accent…? I have a fairly genetic southern accent. Sorry it offends you, I much prefer it to my friends various very strong local accents.

MichelleScarn · 06/07/2022 20:05

So because you don't recognise it as a regional accent it's not?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/07/2022 20:05

do you mean Wimbledon as in the tennis tournament or the area you live in?

Fairislefandango · 06/07/2022 20:06

Arguably all accents are regional. Just because someone comes from SE England, that doesn't mean they don't have an accent. Non-RP regional accents aren't superior (or inferior) to RP accents, and they are (quite rightly) widely represented all over the media these days, so there's nothing exactly special about hearing them.

ShinyMe · 06/07/2022 20:06

Southern England is also a region, OP.

Also, you can't really help it if you don't pick up an accent! It depends on how your family speak, the people around you when young etc. I'd love to sound more like where I'm from, but I don't and I can't exactly fake it.

You should check out the Batley Shove Ha’Penny Championships instead.

Fairislefandango · 06/07/2022 20:10

Yes because you can not determine where they come from you should be proud of your county.

Confused You should be proud of speaking how you happen to speak because of where you happen to have grown up? Why? Why is it important to be able to tell where someone cones from by their accent? Do London/Home Counties not count as somewhere with an accent?

This sounds like quite a divisive, judgmental attitude tbh OP.

Eggsinthemorning · 06/07/2022 20:11

Let's see the north south decide

What about those of us not from a specific county OP? Born abroad, part schooling in Middle East, Lived London 20yrs now SE 2yrs.

What 'county' should I be proud of to speak OP by your rules???

ManateeFair · 06/07/2022 20:12

What do you mean by ‘at Wimbledon’? Commentators? Players? Officials? The crowd?

The commentators, players and umpires are from all over the world. The crowd are mostly from all over the UK, with quite a lot from overseas too. You will hear plenty of regional accents there. A London accent is a regional accent, for a start, so even if the entire crowd was local to Wimbledon itself, most of them would have a regional accent.

Your accent is no more special or interesting than any other accent. Do you want a medal for it or something?
