misuse of an apostrophe?

In his resignation letter he mentions

we protected people's jobs

I thought he was better than that.

In accordance with the laws of pedanticness this post contains one (1) spelling mistake, one (1) grammar mistake, and one (1) affront to pedantry.

I agree OP. Disgraceful.
What IS this country coming to!

1nsertusername · 05/07/2022 18:30

Thank god he has resigned with this sort of behaviour! I'd be calling for his head if the queen would allow it 😉

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/07/2022 18:33

It's not wrong. The jobs of the people.

If you put the apostrophe at the end, it would mean jobs of the peoples.

Bearlet · 05/07/2022 18:33

The apostrophe is correct, though (unless I'm being stupid).

moredogsthansense · 05/07/2022 18:34

um - what’s wrong with it? Surely people is a collective noun anyway, which doesn’t need an s to make it refer to lots of persons, so why wouldn’t the apostrophe be before the s? If it was “peoples’ jobs” then wouldn’t that mean the jobs of several different peoples, such as the Scottish people and the English people? Which I suppose it could, but does it need to?
I’m prepared that I might be unreasonable here …

UrsulaPandress · 05/07/2022 18:35

Looks correct to me 🤔

UrsulaPandress · 05/07/2022 18:36

Your thread title on the other hand ….

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2022 18:36

A future career as Education Secretary beckons.

You're not being stupid. People is already plural.

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2022 18:37

Does it matter ? Maybe he was typing it through a vale of tears because he finally found his backbone and it hurt a bit ?
.

SnowyLamb · 05/07/2022 18:38

The apostrophe is correct?

Is there a joke here that's gone over my head?

lifeturnsonadime · 05/07/2022 18:39

Mmmm, the apostrophe is correct OP.

custardbear · 05/07/2022 18:39

Isn't it just indicating the job of the individual!?
I'm a scientist not an English language buff so perhaps talking bollocks - again!) 😜

This

I think you need to re look op!

TerffLonDon · 05/07/2022 18:40

Nope. People’s is the possessive of people (people is the plural of person). Peoples’ is the possessive peoples (differing groups of people).

I’ve now typed the word people so many times it looks like a made up word….

LubaLuca · 05/07/2022 18:42

Oh, sweet irony.

TerffLonDon · 05/07/2022 18:42

Also, you mean Pedantry not Pedanticness

Pottedpalm · 05/07/2022 18:42

His use of the apostrophe is correct. You have used an apostrophe incorrectly though; it should be ‘Sunak’s ‘.

LaFeuilleMorte · 05/07/2022 18:44

Hoist by your own petard, OP.

Or perhaps a veil of tears.

HollowTalk · 05/07/2022 18:47

Op, you've made yourself look daft here!

bloodyunicorns · 05/07/2022 18:47

Lol! The irony of you complaining about an error that is actually not an error, while misusing an apostrophe yourself and misspelling Sunak's name... 😂😂

the80sweregreat · 05/07/2022 18:48

Veil !! Yes, ( I'm just as bad as the chancellor )

LargeDeviation · 05/07/2022 18:49

The peoples's voice has been heard. I bow my head in shame.

OP posts:
bloodyunicorns · 05/07/2022 18:50

But go on, op, which other errors have you found? 🤔
