public showers

Got into a debate recently with a friend over the showers at our local gym. We go to the gym together a lot of the time and both always shower after.

Given the prices of everything going up, the cost of living being more expensive, and the fact that the gym membership itself isn't cheap, every time I go I take full advantage of the 'free' hot shower. I always take shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a razor, face scrub/wash and generally everything I use in a shower as if I were at home.

I do not wash my hair every day at home, I save that for when I use the gym showers roughly 3x a week. And yes I shower daily but only wash my body , in my shower at home for 5 minutes max. And yes DH and DC all shower normally at home, I just thought saving water where we can is smart.

Friend saw my razor and was mortified that I shave in the public showers. I don't personally think it's dirty and I don't mind the thought of someone else also shaving in them. I'm only talking legs and armpits, no pubic hair as I get a wax, maybe that's tmi, but I think if I didn't get a wax then maybe I would do my pubic hairs as well??

Friend just made me feel really dirty and unhygienic and I wanted others opinions on it?? I didn't realise it was so disgusting

@girlmom21

Clifford's gym in long Eaton Derbyshire has removable shower heads in the gym. Booya!

It's not really a 'booya' moment if you have to be so specific about the gym that you basically confirm what I said - the large majority don't have those facilities.

Lots of men shave at my gym at the sinks, I’m yet to see stubble splashed everywhere, walls covered in hair, or people showering in stubble. I do however see hairs from peoples heads in the shower sometimes, yet weirdly washing your hair isn’t vile, disgusting, selfish or vomit inducing.

I need to get my husband to speak to these men. Our bathroom gets absolutely covered in hair every time he shaves - god knows what goes on in there when he gets that razor out...

Shaving in a public shower is not OK. There's a sign up in my gym telling people not to do this

VoodooDollMaker · 02/07/2022 08:05

If everyone stopped shaving in the public showers I wouldn't be able to produce my Voodoo Dolls so easily. I would have to rely on nail clippings and they are much harder to find and even more difficult to incorporate into an effigy.

So that would be my career down the plug hole too. Sad

No spots or splashes of blood surely means that any one on their period should just stay at home too, yes?

Yes I’m wondering when those saying it’s gross because you could cut yourself are going to answer this?

LegInLegOut · 02/07/2022 08:52

I was in the gym one time and there was a lady working out with a beanie hat on her head. I didn't think much of it until I went for a shower after and saw her rinsing hair dye off her head!
Communal shower with curtains so all the dye was running all over the floor.
Thank god for flip flops.
I thought she was bleeding to death or something at first!
She must have applied it prior to working out, hence the hat. She had one of those disposable shower caps on underneath it, which I spotted in the bin.

Oh man . I'm with your friend on this. It's bad form

balalake · 02/07/2022 09:00

I am surprised shaving is accepted at the gym concerned and not prohibited.

I understand the wish to save money, but is it penny wise pound foolish? Get rid of the car first perhaps, or have a very small engined one, for example.

Why is body hair grosser than head hair

It isn't, but I wouldn't agree with someone shaving their head or cutting their hair in a public shower either.

cottagegardenflower · 02/07/2022 10:28

I would be disgusted to see someone shaving in a public shower.

rahjama · 02/07/2022 15:53

LOLing at people telling me to get rid of my car or cancel my gym membership

Missing the point of the thread completely, I didn't ask for money saving tips

I think it's fine. If you don't tell anyone about it, no one will be able to tell that you do it - because it doesn't leave anything behind that isn't already left by showering anyway.

I'm sure someone will reply that women should not swim when having periods. They should isolate themselves on the red tent until they are no longer unclean🙄

Liorae · 07/02/2023 20:55

My health club provides towels, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. I think that means they expect users to want a full shower. The showers are in cubicles, so I would neither know nor care if someone was shaving while showering. They ladies changing room also has a very convenient spin dryer for swim suits, which I am sure would disgust the good women of mumsnet!

JonahAndTheSnail · 07/02/2023 23:52

We had public showers at uni, I'm sure shaving wasn't the worst thing people did in them!

Bananatushy · 07/02/2023 23:59

Shaving does seem gross, but no more so than peeing in the shower and I don’t really have much of an issue with that.

Johnisafckface · 08/02/2023 05:32

It makes me ill to think about it but I think it’s better than when I find long head hairs all over the stall. Grossed me out. Public showers gross me out anyway but long hairs really disgust me.

28January · 08/02/2023 05:39

I think it’s gross because it’s pretty impossible to wash all the hair away. I hate it at the gym when there is hair on the floor, let alone body hair. Washing/conditioning your hair on the other hand is totally acceptable. Any decent gym will provide shampoo and conditioner.
