public showers

Got into a debate recently with a friend over the showers at our local gym. We go to the gym together a lot of the time and both always shower after.

Given the prices of everything going up, the cost of living being more expensive, and the fact that the gym membership itself isn't cheap, every time I go I take full advantage of the 'free' hot shower. I always take shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a razor, face scrub/wash and generally everything I use in a shower as if I were at home.

I do not wash my hair every day at home, I save that for when I use the gym showers roughly 3x a week. And yes I shower daily but only wash my body , in my shower at home for 5 minutes max. And yes DH and DC all shower normally at home, I just thought saving water where we can is smart.

Friend saw my razor and was mortified that I shave in the public showers. I don't personally think it's dirty and I don't mind the thought of someone else also shaving in them. I'm only talking legs and armpits, no pubic hair as I get a wax, maybe that's tmi, but I think if I didn't get a wax then maybe I would do my pubic hairs as well??

Friend just made me feel really dirty and unhygienic and I wanted others opinions on it?? I didn't realise it was so disgusting

This is why I use flip flops 😂

Me too 👍

I'm sorry, but if you can afford a gym membership then you can afford to shave at home Confused

I don't understand this comment.

It has nothing to do with affording? Of course I can afford to shower at home. But when I pay for a gym membership, it is going to cost the same amount every month there whether I shower or not. I can effectively shower there for free. But if I don't shower there, my electricity/water bill goes up at home. It's about saving little bits which add up.

Do people seriously think I can't afford to shower at home, but I can afford a gym membership?

Doesn't bother me at all.

Great idea.

No different to holiday cottage, or having a cleaner or anything else.

Op isn't pooing in the shower and leaving it, it's just a tiny bit of hair.

Like others have said it's long hair that blocks it anyway not a quick leg shave.

The holiday cottage is cleaned between customers surely?

Take your skanky ways home with you. If you can afford gym membership, you can afford to shave in your shower

I knew someone who lived in a tiny bedsit, and was only a member of the local gym so they could use the shower facilities.

Is it legal to rent a place out without bathroom facilities?

veggiemonster · 01/07/2022 21:55

I do it, really don't see the problem with it. It's not 'foul' or 'disgusting', it's literally just hair. It all goes down the plug hole as does the hair on your head. I always make sure the cubicle is clean before I leave.

MummyofTw0 · 01/07/2022 21:55

Yep total gross

Toottooot · 01/07/2022 21:56

Gadz min - jist dinna.

whataloadabullocks · 01/07/2022 21:57

I think it's more the issue of clogging up the plug hole. I know when i shave my legs (at home) I'll need a ton of drain unblocker, I don't think my leg hair is particularly thick, long or jungly, but for some reason it tends to jam the plug hole, more than my head hair! I've known people do their teeth in the shower or the sink at my local gym and I find it a bit gross, although I'm not sure why, as people spit the water out in a shower, so it's not really any different....but still gives me the ick!

CallOnMe · 01/07/2022 21:27

For me it’s how long you’re spending in the shower.

I find there’s always a queue so there’s only time for a body wash to get the sweat off and clean your body.

I disagree with that. You sweat a lot on your head so hairwashing is also justifiable.
Obviously not treatments, face masks, shaving, etc.
But then again I've never had to queue because there are plenty of people who shower at home.

It was two bathrooms (that people kept their bikes in) between about 10 bedsits.
I stayed overnight once, and could understand why they paid for a gym so they could feel clean.

IronChef · 01/07/2022 22:02

I wouldn't do it personally just as I want to be quick and I'll do my de-fuzzing comfortably at home. My old gym had signs up saying no shaving or exfoliating, not my current one. Though I imagine there's grosser stuff than leg stubble in shared shower facilities so it wouldn't freak me out as much as some pp feel about it. My gym shower heads aren't removable though and the pitiful spray doesn't really lend itself to giving every bit of the floor a rinse. I keep my flip flops on everywhere just in case!

My gym shower and changing room is weird, people don't seem to actually use the cubicles for a proper shower so I doubt there's that many shaving. They tend to stay in their swim gear and just rinse off with the door open. I get weird looks when I emerge wrapped in my towel after a proper shower.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 01/07/2022 22:08

It wouldn't bother me at all. I would always wear flip flops in public showers, so no part of my body would come in contact with the shower.

Why is shaving more disgusting than people washing their bum in the shower which I assume everyone does?

If you're trying to save money and cut costs, cancel the gym membership altogether and shower and shave at home. That would be my thinking anyway!

wellyelliebee · 01/07/2022 22:17

Bizarre thread. Have none of you ever been camping and used the showers there? The important bit is to leave the shower clean, which she does.

Is no one reading my posts? Why wouldn't you want to cut costs? That doesn't mean cutting everything out that isn't the bare essentials?

If you're worried about cost, then quit the gym membership! The showering shaving thing is just weird and unpleasant for others

DillonPanthersTexas · 01/07/2022 22:21

I'm a bloke and you get plenty of guys using the gym sinks to have a shave. I'm not 'disgusted' by it but it is considered very poor form not to clean up afterwards. I have more issues with the minority of men who use the hair driers to dry their whole body. There is something weird about seeing a mans knob spin around like a clowns comedy bow tie as he blasts himself with hot air.

I did read your posts. That's why I wrote what I did. I wouldn't be worried about shaving at home making it cost more water/electricity etc. I'd be thinking why would actually make a proper difference to my outgoings. I'm not saying don't use the gym at all. But perhaps you could go less often and pay as you go instead?

Wtf?! I’ve shaved my legs at the gym, many a time. Always make sure the drain / floor / walls are clean.

No different to head hair 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coasterfan · 01/07/2022 22:38

We go camping for 2 to 3 weeks at a time, am I not meant to shave for half the summer?!!! I know this is about gyms but surely the same arguments apply for camping showers?
